other way round.. make him dependable so that he becomes a pawn and basically must do the investigation the way you want him to do... whoever drugged him actually coined the emergency password... whoever drugged him is using ML to uncover the case from 20 yrs ago
Pulling ML into this case is def. by someone who is relative/friend /somebody of the dead guy from high school...
fairly sure goes back to 20 yrs ago... High school boy who died.. and it is in turn related to the redevelopment project that happened 20 yrs ago by this same company
My guess is, that guy's death got covered and ML was made to switch school as he was the only one who made noise about it. Brother/family member of the dead guy (likely the younger cop) is out for revenge... and using ML to get things done... so he needs to make sure that ML is totally under his control to drive the case as it is..
see, the moment something is stuck... ML and FL or whoever is relevant gets the right clue automatically

That's becuase Ming is so sure of something being so wrong that he is going to feel out new joe sexually... funny part in the book is, Joe knows that Ming is trying to feel him out through various ways (enquiring mom, cooking etc).. but he never thought Ming will use sex to do that... :D :D
