The king did not love Hong. Don't confuse obsession and possession with Love. These are two poles. The king used…
I agree wholeheartedly, and you put it very well. The first time I watched this movie, and I have only ever seen it on my computer screen, I was gobsmacked with emotions from all directions in addition to being blown away by all aspects of the production, acting/direction/fight choreo/exterior, large-scale battle scenes/cinematography/everything.
That was four years ago and I have watched AFF at least four times. I am American and I had just discovered Asian cinema/gay cinema/BL, of which I was completely ignorant. Being a typical, insulated American, I had never even considered checking out Asian movies. They were totally off my radar screen.
But I'm an avid film watcher, so as I ran out of American gay films to watch (80% trash) I gradually began searching out European and Latin American films, mostly on Youtube. Then, once I'd accepted the concept of subtitles (I remember thinking my entire life before this that I would NEVER watch something with subtitles lol) and watched tons of those films, I stumbled across AFF on Youtube of all places; and it wasn't a censored version either. It may have been the first Asian feature film I ever watched.
I spent two hours in my armchair gasping and crying and freaking out at what I was seeing. My brother was in the same room watching TV and thought I was losing my mind. lol After that, I opened wide to Asian cinema and some dramas (I find most trashy and overwrought). Now it feels weird to watch an English film without subs. :)
Another great Korean short film starring the great Korean actor Kim Bum Tae. I can't believe this guy doesn't have a much longer filmography. He's remarkably talented. Please see him also in "Out of Focus," in which he is as effective a hilariously obnoxious film student as he is a melancholy, failed job-seeker here. It's on Youtube.
As always, the MDL rating for this film is obscenely low.
If you have a brain and a heart, this film will touch both profoundly.
This dude is hilariously excellent as the very drunk, and obnoxious, friend and fellow film student of the student director in the unique and hysterically funny short, "Out of Focus." It's on youtube. I gave it a 9.5/10 and this guy's a big part of the reason. He's the funniest, totally wasted character I've seen. Completely, horrendously obnoxious and yet also naturalistic. Bravo!
This guy is almost unbelievably hilarious and excellent as the obnoxious friend of a student-director in the absolutely unique short film, "Out of Focus." Check it out on Youtube. I've watched it three times now, and each watch is funnier than the last.
This is one of the funniest, most unique shorts I have ever seen. Just watched a third time and laughed harder than the two times before. :)
The three MLs are one hundred percent perfect in their parts. Great acting which means great direction...most likely. :D The student-director so accurately caught the feeling of having been up for all-nighters a week in a row, and yet still having to finish an important assignment/project. The "friend" who wouldn't leave him alone was hysterically funny in his casual obnoxiousness, and then the drunk guy comes down the hall and I almost wet my pants. lol The drunk-acting was right on the edge of being over the top, but somehow it worked. God, how funny.
Perhaps the best aspect of all is that these extremes of emotions and actions all seemed entirely natural and realistic, which is what made it so freaking funny. Nothing worse than amateur acting to kill a great story.
That staccato, irregular drum-beat was perfection as the only background music.
Naturally, and as always, this being mdl, the rating above is absurdly low. Ignore it. Piss on it. Reject it. This short film is a riot.
The promo posters are indeed queer-baiting.. The movie was even marketed as BL which it is not.. The name of the…
"human trafficker..." People like you disgust me. There is no unfounded accusation or rumored BS you won't sink low enough to repeat about a celebrity. You're the reason so many Korean celebrities take their own lives. F**k you. You're scum.
Pretty damn good thriller, though there were a couple aspects of the plot I don't understand. Hot men without shirts, and "killer" bare-ass naked are plus points. Great, intricate fight scenes that, despite their improbable outcomes, I found convincing. Nobody does fight choreo better than the Koreans. Jung Woo Sung is something else. One of my top five fave actors. There's nothing he can't do, and well. Great body too.
Sweet, sweet, sweet. Wow, the customer is drop-dead gorgeous. I love quiet shorts like this chock full of feels. One flaw: That woman manager. She was a total b***h to the customer.
Matchbox/Strongberry are the bomb. This early effort has a few rough patches, but the studio's trademark feels are all there. I like that they aren't afraid of melancholy/sad/open endings. This one reaches a low point for sure, but the coda with the boss on the riverside was a positive, hopeful wrap-up.
Anyone else think the customer was a tad bi-curious?
Really liked the friendship between the boy and his boss, they were really supportive of eachother and i found…
I loved the way the film started, with the boss gruffly saying "yo, bitch" and "even though you're a homo," etc. It was a great bit of acting in that I knew immediately he was on the kid's side, despite his language. lol
Aren't you missing his double motive in keeping quiet about what the girl told him about Kohei? Sure, he didn't…
Yeah, I wish I had the willpower to wait until shows like this have aired in their entirety so I could binge them, but this one is too good for me to do that. We get so much crap out of Thailand, that I'm always eager to check out anything from Japan, Korea, Taiwan because that's where the good ones have been originating the last two years or so.
It was great when I discovered BL over three years ago, and there were so many existing shows for which all the episodes were available. I binge-watched BLs for a few weeks solid. lol All my fave first BLs were Thai, but my god, I haven't liked anything out of there since Moonlight Chicken two years ago.
Aren't you missing his double motive in keeping quiet about what the girl told him about Kohei? Sure, he didn't…
All I am saying is that BOTH protecting his friend from being hurt, and being jealous that she wasn't interested in him are factors here. I keep remembering how excited Taichi was that the girl wanted to meet him at the restaurant. It was obvious that he was excited at the possibilities; that he was attracted to/likes her, and he was crestfallen when she asked about Kohei.
It's going to be interesting going forward...at this point, my feeling is that Kohei is romantically attracted to Taichi, but for Taichi it is the feeling of a dear friendship. Of course, this is a BL, so that's likely to change but that's the vibe I get after 4 episodes.
Whatever happens, this is a very good series thus far.
In the scene where Kohei is alone in the rain and Taichi appears with an umbrella, it's heart-wrenching. Kohei's…
Do you really feel that he "confessed" his romantic feelings? He confessed that he would miss Taichi's voice more than anything else, but to say that was a confession in the Asian sense of the word seems like a stretch. He went part way there, but certainly not to a proclamation of romantic love. And then he switched gears in asking about the girl and what she said.
i love that you can feel how much they care about each other, the fact that taichi has protected kohei in every…
Aren't you missing his double motive in keeping quiet about what the girl told him about Kohei? Sure, he didn't relay the message because her insincerity is hurtful, but at the same time, he was interested in her himself and thus jealous that she didn't ask him to meet for that reason. I like the gray area vibe we're getting in that regard. Taichi's motives are mixed.
Both leads are exceptional actors. I'm enjoying their realistic, restrained, naturalistic performances, not something we see much in BL World.
The issue of what was said by the girl to Taichi but not relayed to Kohei is interesting. I get that Taichi didn't want Kohei to be hurt by her motivations, but at the same time it seemed that Taichi was hopeful that she was interested in HIM and was disappointed that her attentions were toward Kohei instead. In short, he was jealous. So it seems he had TWO motives for not telling Kohei, one honorable, the other not so much. I'm looking forward to that settling itself out as we advance.
The scene under the bridge was beautifully acted and directed. This is a good show so far.
