You're making stuff up. It is MAYA and her story line that is annoying, boring, and a waste of time that should be focused on the MC. She was written to be a virulently unlikeable person, and the writer succeeded. I hate her.

The show is terribly written. Maya is a self-centered psycho who, instead of getting a hearing aid, walks around pretending she can hear and treating everyone like shit. Maya needs to learn to be nicer to people WITHOUT disabilities. The lesson I've learned from her story line is that deaf girls can be rude, nasty bitches too.

And YES! The thing with Japanese folks NEVER expressing themselves drives me nuts! Like Kohei's mom watching him cry, knowing good and well what's going down, but she makes some knowing, smiley face nods and ignores what he is going through. ugh again.

It's not a "slow burn" when we have 20 minutes left and the MC walk away from each other. If they reconcile in ep 12 it will be rushed and lame.
