This all sounds familiar. I remember feeling similarly about the female lead but can't quite remember why, may have had to do with my personal feelings about her choices. But your summary is making me think about a rewatch at some point. Hope you've found something interesting since.

If you're so inclined, would be curious to know how you find Secrets of the Shadow Sect. Please manage your expectations! It has all the usual short falls of a short drama. I've watched Wonderland of Love and remember liking it more than expected at first but being disappointed by something by the end, can't quite remember which part. I think it had something to do with the decisions the FL lead made, might have contributed to some of the side characters getting killed? My memory is very fuzzy. But I think I remember appreciating the ML's conflict of not wanting to rule but the FL wanting him to take on the responsibility. Now that you remind me, that was kinda similar to DandD (if my faulty memory can be trusted).

couldn't agree more. there are many things that I liked about this drama, and the way desire is portrayed is definitely one of them. Particularly liked how they played with the power dynamic between the leads. I was trying to think of dramas that do something similar and honestly can't come up with any. The short dramas do seem to get more leeway for intimacy, but very few of them do it well. I remember liking Secrets of the Shadow Sect, but I still don't think it came anywhere near this one in terms of quality.
I just finished the series and truly enjoyed it. It struck a perfect balance between romance and politics, offering…

Yup they did very good with remake of drama. In novel Fei Kouer had many faces to hide her real face. Since she…
i'm so late, but needed to come back and thank you for your reply! it is very satisfying to know the differences between the drama and novel. on my last rewatch I finished feeling like I was missing something, and your reply eased that away. and can't agree more, my girl is a rare find in how strong and competent she is, i love her so much! and the intelligent but physically weak man that loves her. anyways, i hope you're having a blessed day.
She rocked her role in Dominion and Devotion, can't wait to see what she does next. Would the gods bless us with more gender bending characters for her, please?
does anyone know if the opening them song exists on its own somewhere? it sounds a bit different than the song Camino from the OST (or OHS lol). need me some of that calming, wordless music in my life
also has anyone done a color analysis of this drama? The way Pinjing's blues feel so deliberate in contrast to the yellow (or orange?) and red of Changlin's banner, and very much present in Pingzhan's customs as well as Tingsheng's deep coppers and browns. Would like to read all the things about it
also huang hao yue and li ge yang now have my loyalty. there were both hot as hell in this, and the acting was on point.
