The twist is that all of this tragedy started unwittingly from the Princess being too young.

The focus is on the two couples facing insurmountable obstacles. It is about the journey, not the destination. The interaction between the couples, between the women and even with the aides and the eunuch were pretty funny, sad and touching. The Princess cornering Kun to find out about the sister, he was between a rock and a hard place. When she cuts her hand to give blood in the cavern and he looks to the side, I think it shows him hiding his emotions, gratitude...., guilt...she is after all a Princess. The Marquis finding the bandaged wrist hidden under her sleeve and finding out that she and Kun were giving blood behind his back. The Marquis risked loosing both of his loves. Qinyue with the scissors. The Princess talking to Qinyue about having a get together with Changfen on New Years and the brief frozen smile that Qinyue makes. There are a lot of feelies that make re-watching favorite scenes a habit, that even the sledge and fireflies in the field comes second best.
The ending, hope for one couple and sadness for the other and a third happy ending for everyone that may be a dream. Thank you.

The hero depleted his energy defeating the big villain. He wasn't able to restore his energy but the first tribulation as the boar with the FL showed that love was the way to restore his energy. He should have a showdown with the Devil god at the end.

The Prince of the Yilan village was killed after the New Year's attack. That's why he mentioned getting the kirin blood from the Princess. After the attack YLBLs were hiding amongst the general population. So when the Princess stumbled and fell and opened her cut again, two YLBLs were attracted to her blood. The tree planted around the city finally matured and blossomed after the New Year's attack and the first blossoming was shown when the petal landed on the FL's hand.
I think that the focus was on the love between the two couples. And the fight scenes may have been stretching the budget. You are right in that a great plot line wasn't expanded. Still have to look further at the sister's situation. Thank you hope that this helps.

There is a subplot that the Yilan tribe and the city (the Father and Marquis) are having a war of extermination. The Butterfly curse was a secret technique developed Yilan witch doctors to save people. How or why is not explained by Madam Yuan, when she reveals this info in ep.9. 4:13 Earlier in ep. 8, Chang Feng tells his brother the Marquis about an attack on Dongxun village by bandits five years ago and 48 villagers went missing. He believed that like his sister, they were made butterfly slaves. They are the women who made the New Year's attack, including that on his wife. The wife is from that village and that time may be when the she became a slave. But she is unique and may have been a "slave" or imbued with that power before then. The bad guys of this story are less obvious, as the Marquis has killed many Yilan villagers including their Prince (in ep.9) and the peony trees will kill any butterfly slaves when they bloom, whether or not if they were killers. The sister introduces the dilemma that the Yilan needed the Princess because she had the kirin blood. And they (and the Marquis) haven't found anyone else with that blood.
Will look at what was said about the sister and kirin blood. The ML was bringing some when she was shot by her Father.

One interesting thing in the last episode is that one person important to the story doesn't appear. It is Madam Yuan. The Father and his assistant are there, Ms Hong and the Chef are there, the eunuch and the Marquis's assistant are there as well as the two couples and the daughter. No mention of the YLBLs either. This could be a New Year's gathering without the monster story line.
But in the beginning of the episode, the daughter and husband still appear out of thin air again.

They changed an important part of ep. 22. Wrong subs, but watch and have your heart filled.

A thought. If there is another drama from the writer and director, maybe there will be four cameos that will make our hearts burst with happiness.

The ML first met the FL in her home village. The bandits killed everyone save the FL. She in turn killed all of the bandits save the last one. That’s the one that the ML stabbed with his sword in front of the FL.

The. detox where the YLBL blood is removed starts with drinking the peony soup and enduring 7 days of excruciating pain. Then one has to endure 3 years of treatment to become human. This was discussed in ep. 1.
The ML is taking a gamble that the treatment will work on him. 1. The FL was unique so her almost successful detoxification was unusual. 2. The soup treatment had more failures that successes. If he survived the seven days, then he would need 3years to complete it.
For optimists among us, the daughter is 3 years old when the chime rings.

The FL apparently was a YLBL as long as she can remember. Perhaps from birth. But for some reason living with the ML caused it to go into remission. That is why the red tattoo disappeared, even before she started treatment to turn into a human. The attacks caused the YLBL to reappear in times of stress or when activated by smelling Kirin blood.

The Princess comes across as a bit naive and as a contrast to her husband, is kind, loves with all of her heart and puts others before her, in spite of being a pampered princess. She knows what she wants and catches on pretty quickly. Save reading the faces of people around her when she asks about her husband’s fate.

That would be the worst case BE. The best case HE has both surviving. Left open enough so that you can choose the ending that doesn’t tear your heart. Team HE here.

Because the Princess had the kirin blood and it could be used with people not related to her, the Marquis hope that he could transfer her blood to him. Otherwise, he'd die in the attempt.

LCJ used the Butterfly method to make her a slave and then took her blood. He hoped that there was some compatibility with him because the Princess had the kirin blood. That blood could save people not related by blood. The mention of the Mokui tree blossoming soon implies that it killed him while being a slave after he saved the Princess. So BZ was a great aunt. The birth of the girl was a one time opportunity to draw the cursed blood from the mother to the child. A relative was necessary to transfer the blood. But LCF could do it as he was the Father. So both Mother and child were saved and LCF ended up with the blood. Then he would use the Peony soup with seven days of pain to come back. If he came back, then the process was successful.

Never has something been awaited so impatiently but with so much dread.

The butterfly method was to infect the Princess to make her a YLBL to save her life. The Marquis used himself to bring her back to normal. They haven't said why the FL was a YLBL from an early age. Possibly 22 will clarify things.
