Late to the party, but both Lu Yan and Dengdeng intended to sacrifice themselves to save each other. Lu Yan did it first and we are shown him dying with the caution that it would be permanent. Not clearly shown was that his assistant with the glasses, who was nearby sacrificed himself so that Lu Yan could come back. I've remember someone saying that after rebirth, he could enjoy life (without the burden of being beholden to Yun Xi.) Hence the apparent memory loss. I think that when Dengdeng approaches him as hinted in the last scene, it is as man and women rather than goddess and human. When we see Lu Yan at the end, there is a pair of barely visible eyeglasses hanging from his vest. That is the sign that his assistant sacrificed his life for him. So HE for those who desperately wish one.
