The 7th dish represents the person who places 3rd in the imperial examination. 探花 is the term and the second character literally means 'flower' so the flower represents it. Han Yan justifies its inclusion because there are already dishes that represent the person who places 1st and the person who places 2nd in the imperial examination.
I'm up to date on ep 12 and they still haven't stopped
In one of the previous episodes, something happens where the FL is supposedly incriminated, but it was actually one of those girls. The first madam lu doesn't stop disliking the FL, but I think she starts realizing that the FL isn't that bad.
And up to ep 12, Chen Xue herself doesn't harm the FL, but in ep 12, one of CXs servants does harm the FL, but without CX's knowledge.
This is one of my favorite types of dramas, where the set-up isn't just a set-up and has a deeper role in the themes of the drama. I really liked how the drama incorporated the set-up of the opposing positions of the ML and FL on lying and deception to create a deeper conversation.

I agree with all the your points above. And you're so right about the fact that Chinese historical dramas always have to do something to leave you depressed. They almost always have to go and kill a character or two, when they could still be alive.

Consort Li plotted to kill Consort Xian by saying there was a disturbance of evil spirits in the imperial harem, so the Office of Imperial Diviner went to exorcise it. She probably died because they said there was an evil spirit in her. I'm not sure why the emperor didn't punish Consort Li though, but I think that he actually loves her.
