Part 1 of 2Deep dive into the controversy surrounding Perfect Crown ... I do sympathize with the Korean people…
Thank you for sharing this very informative information here 🫶

Here are some summarized and translated viewpoints from the General Public (Koreans) who left the comments on the articles with regards to Perfect Crown's so-called controversy. Before anyone assumes anything, there are always two sides to every thing. I suggest rather than sticking in this forum for information, visit X for them instead as there are more accurate information there compared to here which is just a mere forum. These came from Koreans themselves not fans.

"summary of what the Korean General Public (GP) is arguing in those comments, categorized by their main points of defense:"

1. It Was Accurate Research, Just a Clash with Modern Pride
They followed real records: The GP points out that the 9-tasseled crown (Guryu-myeonryugwan) and the chant "Cheonse" (Live for a thousand years) are factually accurate protocols for a Joseon Dynasty King. In fact, the Seoul Metropolitan Government uses these exact elements in official historical reenactments today.

A narrative disconnect, not a "distortion": The issue arose because the production team brought strict Joseon-era royal protocols directly into a 21st-century modern setting. It created an awkward clash with modern public sentiment, but it was absolutely not an attempt to portray Korea as a Chinese vassal state (the "Northeast Project").

2. The Logic of the Alternate Universe (AU)
It’s a Kingdom, not an Empire: The drama is explicitly set in a fictional, modern "Republic of Korea" where the Joseon line survived directly into the present day without ever transitioning into the short-lived Korean Empire.

Consistent world-building: Because the setting is a "Royal Court" and not an "Imperial Court," the ruler is a King and his son is a Crown Prince (Seja). Commenters argue it is absurd to attack the King for wearing a King’s 9-tasseled crown when the show never claimed he was an Emperor.

Zero real historical figures: Unlike past controversial dramas that altered the actions of real kings, this show is a pure fantasy rom-com with entirely fabricated characters.

3. Clear Media Double Standards
The Last Empress comparison: Viewers point out that the 2018 drama The Last Empress featured an "Emperor" wearing a 9-tasseled crown (which is historically incorrect, as an Emperor should wear 12 tassels), yet nobody tried to cancel it. They argue Perfect Crown is being singled out with an unfair double standard for actually trying to stick to Joseon records.

Joseon Exorcist: The GP points out that trying to compare Perfect Crown to the canceled drama Joseon Exorcist is a completely transparent, bad-faith attempt to muddy the waters. Joseon Exorcist directly distorted and smeared actual, real-life historical figures (like King Taejong and King Sejong). By contrast, Perfect Crown is a modern romance-fantasy operating in an entirely fabricated universe where not a single real-life historical figure exists.

4. Protecting Global Success & Creative Freedom
Reviving the Hallyu Wave: Commenters note that the show is a massive global hit, with international audiences explicitly stating they are switching back to K-dramas from Chinese dramas because of it. Tearing it down domestically over a 1-minute clip actively harms South Korea's cultural prestige.

Stifling the industry: The GP warns that forcing a cancellation over a fantasy rom-com sets a toxic precedent. If creators are trapped in a box of rigid censorship, future writers and actors will completely avoid making fusion historical dramas.

Appreciation for the art: Many comments emphasize that the drama is a beautiful masterpiece. The crew traveled for eight months to showcase traditional Korean aesthetics, palaces, and culture, all wrapped around a fantastic lead romance.

5. Exposure of an Organized "Hate Campaign"
Driven by antis and politics: The public widely believes the controversy is a forced witch hunt orchestrated by anti-fans of the lead actors, critics who dislike the broadcasting network (MBC) due to political factionalism, or entities exploiting anti-China sentiment during an election season. They note that the vast majority of the loudest haters haven't even watched the show from start to finish.

- END -

At the end of the day, IU and Byeon Wooseok had given their public apologies which were their own decision by the way even if it wasn't their fault they still took responsibility, and that says enough about their dedication how they value this project. Director Park Joonhwa and Korean history instructor Choi Tae-sung had also both released their apologies. The production team also opted to edit out the coronation scene of Grand Prince Ian which lasted only for only a few mins of the run of ep 11 btw.

There are also several other points you can read up to, but at the end of the day the drama still remains fictional. It is not about disrespecting korean culture or merely about defending the actors because we are fans. The reality is, this has been blown way out of proportion. Perfect Crown is a work made of several people, they faced and didn't deny their mistakes. They respected the general publics wish but they are still suffering from massively forced driven backlash. Perfect crown is not a documentary it is a fictional drama. The most important point also is in 21st century there is no longer a real monarch existing, the writers/producers merely interpreted it based on how they imagined it would be, hence it does not equate to distortion of history when there is no monarch existing at present.

As of a few days ago 38,000 people in Korea signed the petition to get PC removed from OTT. If 50,000 people sign…
This whole petition thing was never about historical distortion in the first place but a massive hate to the drama. There are many korean articles being published now pointing this out.

why are there so many ai written 10 star rating reviews 😟
Not just 10 star reviews check the lower ratings too, so many bot accs writing reviews. It goes both ways that's why mdl reviews are not always trustworthy.

Honestly, yes — exactly this. What’s been genuinely frustrating in this forum is how some people act like…
Before replying I suggest you understand the context first. No one is saying that those who share critiques should be disrespected. I don't know why you are twisting my words and even this users words. That's exactly what I am saying respect goes both ways, i'm calling out others who don't understand that. No one is saying valid criticisms isn't allowed. Read again.

When will you stop the fans bashing everyone as haters for even a remote criticism. People are disappointed because…
I don't think you're understanding the context of my comment. I am not talking about those sharing criticisms, i'm pointing out about those certain people who like to generalize and ruin others enjoyment. Those people who specifically try to target others who are loving this drama.

It's not confirmed
I mean it's not confirmed yet that the drama will be cancelled, it's only a petition which has not been approved by higher ups. A similar case like this happened with Snowdrop drama, there were petitions for that as well to be cancelled but it didn't. So, what I mean by not confirmed is that it is not definite the show is cancelled because it is only just a petition.

Amazing K Drama 🎭😊 I just finish watching it in 2 days and I can’t stop thinking about it!!! The acting,…
Yes. It's truly devastating how Perfect Crown ended in gloom because of massive and force haters who had no better to do but try drag everyone in this drama. It's really unfortunate, IU and BWS didn't even get to celebrate the success of PC or posts their final goodbyes to their characters. I hope that despite all, they don't forget that globally they are loved and in korea, most of the public still supports them. It is just that haters have gotten out of control. Well, while they try to bring PC down. PC remains successful.

One thing I find absolutely ridiculous in this forum is how certain people seem to be purely obsessed and hyperfixated on a drama they claim to not have liked ages ago. Constructive criticisms are valid but if you keep coming to this forum even to the point of targeting those who enjoyed this drama, basically generalizing and acting like your words are absolute law so others shouldn't like or even enjoy this drama is purely disturbing and a mindset that makes you no different from toxic people. It's just a drama you didn't like, you can easily move on and get a life. If you are so adept on pushing your narrative, why not use it to become a scriptwriter/actor or producer yourself and make your own drama. You keep bantering about constructive criticims and targeting others in this forum, constructive criticisms are respected but respect goes both ways, it doesn't give you free pass to target others.

I think it’s fair to call out both extremes, but equating genuine appreciation of a drama with “toxic positivity”…
Perfectly said. It's why this platform has gotten so toxic because certain people have rigid mindset and seem hyperfixated on the most useless things. This drama is purely for entertainment purposes yet certain people latch onto it like their life depends on it. If they knew better why not become actors/scriptwriters or producers instead of using so much time on the internet with so much blabbering. I will never get the obsession of certain people, they make it sound like a crime to enjoy Perfect Crown

You know what? Thank God they didn’t drag this stupidity out for another four episodes. At least they showed…
It's impossible to not be well-informed about the influence Perfect Crown has garnered globally that others weren't aware of its existence, your statement: " No one knows how many of those ratings were bought and how many, like me, were disappointed by the ending." should change to "I" or "me" because this drama has been globally popular and the talk in almost every social media platforms. The ratings I spoke of don't pertain to the rating on this forum which mind you, is a tiny speck of dust to a dramas achievement. If you've been a longtime kdrama watcher you'd know the basics atleast. Perfect Crown among its airing time has yielded really high ratings showing its immense success, it's been well percieved both nationally and globally. I won't share links/datas, you can check them yourself. Eventually, even if you didn't like this drama and called the ending sh*tty, it doesn't change the dramas success. So sorry not sorry but, I won't be leaving the ratings = Perfect Crown's success.

I thought of just being a silent spectator, but bro some people are too much. The director in his apology also…
I agree. This platform and reddit are no different when it comes to toxicity. Constructive criticism is lost in translation here apparently, it says a lot about this aspect when you look at the reviews other than the comments. Some accounts which i've seen numerous times are keen on constantly spreading hate for this drama even when it had already ended. One thing haters can't change is the success of this drama, being the most popular in this year 2026. This is just a tiny forum it won't affect the rating success this drama achieved. On all other platforms like X, IG and tiktok this has been well-recieved.

And we have 12 instead and with the recent event, we do not even get the special episode 🥲
I hate the recent event so much. We didn't deserve this. Yeah it's unfortunate. The actors can't even write a proper goodbye post or celebrate the dramas success on social media.
