The leads have no sexual chemistry and it's so odd. lolLike they have chemistry (romantic, sincere, playful) but…
I agree about their kisses but the hugs are better than usual. She actually hugs him back, and her hands are talking. And notice -- the two attendants are used to convey in imagination what is happening as they date in secret. Ancient tried and true theatrical use of observant supporting characters to avoid boredom-by-intimacy onstage.
But yeah, whether one thinks they have chemistry in this case is up to personal taste and imagination filling in gaps.
E p27 --Did anybody else love the little jade figurines JZ soothed her little new sister-in-law with? The hidden little girl in me would have loved those, and the puppies and marionettes to come!
Ep26 What a great episode. I am still amazed that YY was able to steer his way through the second meeting with his master and the Emperor! Such a clever man, and so creative politically.
In this world where women are confined by 'reputation', the plot nicely reminds us that everyone loves a good romance, and YY uses YX's wild passions to actually save both the Heir and his family.
Not that the poor fool is grateful.
Both 26 and 27 satisfyingly fulfilled YY's prediction that he would have to split from Fu Hai Lian's faction, and they filled me with admiration at YY's moves. Nicely, a Go game is interspersed in the episode like a series of discreet claps.
Ep27 In other dramas the 'high-spirited girl' misleads her suitors with the best of intentions, and they suffer behind the scenes after causing complications. I really like this drama; the FL is sincerely sorry for the misunderstandings, and they were mostly the fault of the men anyway. What I like even more is that we are allowed to pity our two loyal and heartsick souls properly and they are allowed to show their feelings in private. I have loved them both, both the Heir and the Nephew.
Ep10 The abusive monologuing of Mr Choi is so realistic. You hardly notice how well it is written because you are so busy hating him. So a shout-out now for one of the all-time best-written worst bosses, and for all the times in these 10 episodes that I have wanted to say that.
Ep 10 One favorite moment Eun ah walking out of ChoiFilms offices after she told Mr.Choi she was the writer. Cue superhero music. Then we return inside where Mr.Choi still stands stunned in place like a lizard caught in an early frost.
My feeling about Ye Xian is that he was a whiff of the more usual crazy-corrupt-palace-princes theme in costume dramas. I say this because Jin Zhao was never buddy-buddy with him, she always treated him with caution.
As a non-participant in the court she was happy to assert her independence and not be subservient. She tells him to his face to stop his tantrum more than once. None of her elders would have done that and it was foolhardy of her to begin with.
But he struck a chord in her, and they were involved in a life-or-death situation once. JinZhao has an innate bravery and calculation that any general would value, so she took him as an ally when he appeared in her life.
ep25 Midway, when JZ meets YY bec she is feeling uneasy now that the wheels of a big marriage have been set in motion.... I dont usually pay attention to the relationship recaps that are starting to crop up at important points, but I found this one actually thrilling. The music was nice but also the slowmo and the threading together of the scenes.
Sometimes these recaps are so perfunctory, almost false , that I suspect they are put in to coddle those who dont remember much of the drama except kisses, touches, hugs and proposals. Usefully, even if a person has missed other high points, this way one can get the gist. I am glad of them myself, if only as an aide-memoire to the elderly. But as a new part of the repertoire, some are better than others, and this one was nice.
The cardigan scene is both real and private, and mildly absurd, as are many of us in our private moments. KKH the actor has the capacity to do that, he can flip into a real Chaplinesque everyman all of a sudden, awkward and heartfelt.
As all of us have said, reading below, the fictional characters are perfectly aligned with the cardigan. And I would guess that all of us, man and woman alike, would be comforted by something similiar in RL and also maybe giggle a little.
How many times has a rom-com ML wrapt his big coat around some tiny FL? Imagine trying to come up something similiar in reverse -- what would you go for in tone? Its a neat problem. Here is one solution. It is perfect in its context -- this drama, this writer, these characters.
I think Park Hae Young intentionally wrote Byeon Eun Ah in a simply an extreme form of intuition, sensitivity,…
I have a friend with a sleep disorder who can run on weird energy for days, when she does lightbulbs explode around her and streetlights dim. It happens. The emotional energy of humans is intense.
Ep9 Out of the frying pan into the fire. I am happy DongMan likes it better. There is a nice silly side to this show that lightens it up on cue. Challenging the poor loan shark to be creative!
It feels like the focus will shift to EunA for real now. Her mom and MiRan are becoming really interesting all of a sudden. What will happen?
This is really an astonishing script, I am such a happy spectator. I cant even guess what will come next.
It is really too wonderful to drag Sung Dong Il into everything. How will Dongman create a great role for him?
sat. ep24 an episode that nicely tapped into the wheel-of-fortune theme common in cataclysmic dramas, and counselled trimming, the middle way between factions. Dont know if this would have helped in the actual era, but the anti-faction message is loud and clear contemporary.
I really loved seenng JZ step up to her role as a political wife, while telling her uncle Gu his dream of advancement was nonsense. If I understood correctly earlier it was because he had not distinguished himself somehow, but she trounced him with the Yao family's position in the queue.
It is pleasant that the Gu women still have no idea of the depths of humiliation to which they will eventually be reduced. Be still, my vengeful heart6!
our FL gives the best embraces in this series.1 thing I love is their mutual affection. she actually embraces…
re women not embracing their guys -- I think things are really changing in asian drama, but C-drama is leading the way in these cute period historicals, just as it did in modern romance dramas too. I am a big kdrama fan, but the SK FL woman-imitating-a-popsicle-stick is really wearing me out even in the most entertaining shows. It should be over already!
Ep22-23 These two episodes really made me feel how fragile status could be in the Imperial world. A real Wheel-of-Fortune script. From the heights to the dungeons and back again for YanYun/Jiu Heng.
Why was YY's patron, Fu Hai Lin, indifferent as to whether he was destroyed? Our perspective on who holds real power is slowly exercised through the ranks until we arrive at the young Emperor being advised by that rascal Fu Hai Lin, but still open to Ye Xian's allegiance.
While we may have been hoping for the ultimate showdown between JZ and her paternal grandmother Madam Gu, that dispute is not swept away by events, but put in perspective. To be returned to, probably.
Lian, JZ' cousin, proves to be one of those girls who has a hidden but fundamental stupidity -- she thinks the world revolves around her. She makes us realize, by contrast, by just how much JZ is always keenly aware of the social and economic structures in which she lives.
When I first met JZ I called her a brat. But she is a very finely written brat, full of nuance balanced by reasoned passion.

How can so much happen in one episode?
Amazing.
As a non-participant in the court she was happy to assert her independence and not be subservient. She tells him to his face to stop his tantrum more than once. None of her elders would have done that and it was foolhardy of her to begin with.
