Before filming LYF, Tan Jianci thought of ways to show that Xiang Liu is different from the other characters,
"I was thinking before filming, how do I show that he's not a human being? That he's an animal. He's a demon."
He made old dramas his reference in preparion for Xiang Liu. He mentioned it was Painted Skin's Xiao Wei, who was a fox demon. He also studied and paid attention to the movements of animals and demons and applied it during filming.
