Its bitter sweet ending, since all characters got what they want, but also lost some very important on the way

I think it's not that he want, but that he understand it's mostly will happen (since he decided fight till the end) and if it will happen he need be prepared (he also doesn't want enemies use his body, which had very high value), also he asked WXL for poisons before he fell for her, and then it's become their own language of love, with "only you can taste and appreciate my poison" and so on

Except other reasons people already wrote, XY send him that pill with romantic message, so if he came earlier it will give her hope that he loves her, but stole her from wedding in such insulting way, used their promise, it's makes her hate him more (what he wants)
