For me his empty promise it's when he promised helped her, but run away from CX and A Nian, and let them bully her, after he promised help her again run away from CX , to not be able deal with him for 10 min so she have time run away, then again he promised her be with her after 15 years and made her wait for him, for me it was very low and I wish he not made her promised it and first break up engagement and only then came and ask her be with him. Because even if it was arrangement marriage and his fiance cheated on him, he didn't know it, but still he kissed and flirt with XY and so on..
I also understand that XY loves TSJ , and with her personality he probably only one who can make her happy, since he even will abandon his son (which also made him not very nice person in my eyes) to be with her. And she need someone who can't live without her.
