What I'm trying to say is that the idea of a genius/smart being socially inept isn't some unique trait of geniuses, it's basically a stereotype that dramas keep repeating because that's how we're used to seeing "genius" characters.

That's why I find Lin Zhixia interesting. Her portrayal feels much closer to what a real-life genius could actually be like: highly intelligent but still socially capable, curious, organized, and emotionally normal. Her social difficulties come more from how other people perceive her intelligence than from her being unable to socialize.

There is no specific record of Einstein's IQ, although rough estimates put it around 160–180, which is roughly around Lin Zhixia's level. Einstein is actually a good example of a real-life genius. He didn't skip multiple grades like Sheldon is portrayed doing, and he entered university at 17 (graduated around 21/22 yo). He was also quite socially capable. He had close friendships, maintained intellectual relationships with other scientists, played music, joked around, and participated in public life. He wasn't the socially clueless stereotype that Sheldon represents.

I mean, she literally handles projects involving complex mathematical processing and modelling. You need to be insanely intelligent to do that. Even Sheldon's main "genius power" is basically his mathematical and theoretical ability. So saying her genius "doesn't amount to much" just because she doesn't constantly use it to solve every plot problem makes no sense to me.
Same with Einstein. Einstein's ability wasn't simply about being "the smartest person in the room." His major strength was his ability to think about problems in unconventional ways, use thought experiments, and challenge assumptions that other physicists accepted. His intelligence also wasn't exceptional in every possible area, being brilliant at theoretical physics doesn't mean being brilliant at everything.

That's why I think Lin Zhixia is a more realistic portrayal of a genius in real life, while Ji Buhai (rigid and socially inept) is much closer to the drama stereotype of a genius. Both are entertaining, but they're portraying two very different ideas of what a "genius" looks like.

I only heard that they switched things around from the novel. It seems the synopsis actually took the novel's character setup rather than the drama's. In the novel, the ML is supposed to be a wealthy son and stays wealthy throughout the story, there's no separation or "ML becomes poor" plot either.

Final Review:

I honestly didn't expect Genius Girlfriend to keep me this hooked. I started it because of Tian Xiwei, but stayed because it's been a long time since a romance drama actually gave me butterflies.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, though. It's slow-paced, doesn't focus only on romance, and spends a lot of time developing the other characters too. The plot isn't groundbreaking and is often quite uneventful with relatively little conflict. There are plenty of familiar clichés, but they're presented with more depth and feel more relatable than usual.

I especially like how it avoids some typical youth-drama stereotypes. Lin Zhixia isn't shy or timid despite being a genius. She's curious, sunny, organized, and socially capable; her difficulty making friends comes more from how intimidating other people find her intelligence. Jiang Yubai isn't the popular school idol either. He's actually quite ordinary, but incredibly warm and soft toward her.

I also think the long youth arc is important. We need enough time to see them build years of memories together, otherwise their later separation wouldn't feel like a real loss. Their romance also feels surprisingly mutual because Lin Zhixia isn't just waiting for the ML to make every move.

My biggest complaint is that sometimes the drama piles new plots on top of unfinished ones. I'd rather see more development of the main couple and existing side characters before adding another heavy storyline.

One thing that surprised me is seeing so many viewers (including myself) say they cried while watching certain episodes. I think that's because the characters feel unusually close and relatable compared with many youth dramas. Even when not much is happening plot-wise, the emotional moments can still hit hard.

Personally, I'd give it 10/10 for how it made me feel (and made me cry several times). Objectively, if I compare it with other slice-of-life dramas and consider what the majority of viewers usually look for, I'd say 8/10 is probably more reasonable.

It's not a groundbreaking drama. It's just one of those rare shows where I actually believe the characters, care about their lives, and genuinely feel butterflies when they fall in love. And honestly, that's enough for me.

To be honest, the premise initially made me hesitate to watch because it sounded like the typical "opposites attract" setup. But I actually love how it turned out. The girl isn't shy or timid, and the boy isn't the popular idol-type guy at school. They both break the usual youth-drama stereotypes, which makes the story much more interesting to me.

Characters like Sheldon or Ji Buhai represent the drama stereotype of a "genius" ,extremely intelligent, but also socially awkward, rigid, obsessed with rules, or lacking common sense. It's a fictionalized version of genius, not necessarily how highly intelligent people behave in real life. A genuinely intelligent person can also be practical, adaptable, socially capable, and good at solving unfamiliar problems rather than simply knowing everything.

That's why I really like how they wrote Lin Zhixia. She's not shy, rigid, or obsessed with rules. She genuinely loves studying because she's naturally curious, which feels more like a trait of a genius to me. Her social problems don't really come from her inability to socialize, they come from how other people perceive her. People feel inferior around her, see her as competition, or even wait for her to fail so they can feel better about themselves.

At the same time, she genuinely craves friendship, but she has learned that many people don't approach her as a friend,they approach her as a rival. I think that's a much more interesting take for a female genius character because she's not simply the usual "smart but kind" FL. She's intelligent, socially capable, and actually wants connection, but her intelligence itself creates a barrier between her and other people.

Ouch, haters caught red-handed. Episode 1 actually shows their elementary school years, and it's not just a five minute appearance. Joke's on you.

25-28 where the romance take off.

First episode they are literally children, and ML and FL story not started till episode 2. how can you find child actor boring ?

heat index is quite stable for this drama, means viewers kept following it throughout the run rather than relying only on opening-week hype.

Maybe you should watch American teen dramas then., it suits better for your taste. There's so much "passion" there. If you're lucky, you might even get the FL ending up with the ML, SML, and third ML all in the same season. FL is guaranteed not typical shy high schooler.

Really? She literally puts him on a pedestal, treats him differently from everyone else, actively looks for him, and holds onto him after meeting him. She initiates the sleepover, holding hands, kissing, sharing a bed, so in what world is she "typical shy"?

Even their almost-kiss turns into a full passionate scene, which is pretty unusual for a youth drama.

Typical youth drama: find the ML annoying → fall for the childhood friend first → wait for the ML to make a move → ML initiates the kiss → FL gets shy whenever things become intimate.

This one is basically the opposite. Get your facts straight

The novel has very little conflict or angst, which would probably make drama viewers drop it pretty quickly. Drama viewers and book readers are two different breeds.

What I mean by "on par" is neither of them do really remarkable acting. SML doesn't have much expression except always being cold and calm. ML also already got criticism for not being able to show subtle emotion through his expression.

I'm Asian too, just not East Asian. But yeah, it's not uncommon for people to start relationships after graduation. It's also pretty common to date with marriage in mind, like Ze Qi.

I personally didn't date until I started working. In my class, I think only around 5% were in relationships. I was in a science major at a relatively high-ranking university in my country, so the competition was pretty intense. Everyone was busy trying to graduate, get good grades, and prepare for a tough job market. So honestly, I think their situation is pretty normal.

Edit: By no means am I a genius like these characters, though.

GG being only 0.2 higher than Overdo is a crime. Too bad so many 1-star ratings seem to come from CP fan wars rather than people who actually watched the show. The number of 1-star ratings appearing on the day it aired is especially suspicious when the first six episodes objectively had good pacing and enough conflict to keep things moving.

It's college time. They're busy studying, building their business, and establishing their careers. That's pretty common, especially in Asia, and even more so when you're a high achiever like them. Romance is basically the last priority.

I think most people with Asian parents will understand this mindset. In their logic, higher education = higher self-value → better chance of meeting an equal or higher-level partner → better partner → better life. It may sound transactional, but that's genuinely how many parents see education and marriage.
