First 20 episodes, they are together but keep fighting. That's the most enjoyable part. After episode 20, they are more or less "pretend to be" together. After episode 22 or so, they are "for sure" together, but still with SML lingering there :)

Indeed such practice of killing concubines who have never been pregnant was brutal and inhumane. As a period that indulged in Confucianism, we can see how flawed the system was. Women were treated like properties of men. I think historically, he was a pretty sad person - depression or something. Wonder if that's why he died so young at 38. So in the writing of Zhu Zhanji, I'm not sure if the writer tries to tell us that, that he is a rather broody depressive character. In Ming Dynasty, it was written that he was almost in a mental stage.

Most people with his status and power would have stripped Hu Shanxiang's title because she poisons him accidentally, either takes Zijin in by force or sends her out of the palace, banishes his friend etc. Instead, he just broods there all by himself, his words not matching his heart.

I didn't say he's not good, just broods, from the beginning until now, episode 24.

He broods when his wife, Hu Shanxiang, doesn't reciprocate his call. He broods when his father sidetracks him. He broods when Yao Zijin turns down his love. He broods when he is jealous of his friend's relationship with Zijin.
