this was such a difficult yet important watch - it reminds me of the netflix mini drama Maid; it's not as easy as we think to leave an abuser, especially when you consider the Chinese/Asian values of being filial, patriarchal Confucius values of being male-family oriented, and sacrificing ourselves for our kids even if we end up losing our sanity etc. The way it's shot was so realistic, almost like a docu-series

try wetv! lolol there's no romance bc thats not what the story is about LOL; it focuses on education as a key to young womens future (esp impoverished girls from the country side), social issues like sexism, s*xual harassement, domestic violence etc. it's not graphic and only touches on the last 2 briefly but it goes to show that this drama highlights very real issues that face not just china but women everywhere

this is one of the best dramas i've seen in the last 5 years among cdramas, and the best this year. you can tell the production team, cast, crew etc absolutely put in 100% efforts to portray zhang gui mei's irl story, as well as the stories of the girls in the high school. just riveting, inspiring, and beautiful all around and does a wonderful job exploring themes like gender inequality, economic inequality, pedagogy, the value of an education, etc.. it makes me want to be a teacher tbh !!!
