I get that typecasting is a legit fear. But here is the thing: it's up to the actors/actresses and their managers to find them something else even if it's low budget/production, no mainstream, no other popular person etc and might have to start all over again. For example, Daniel Radcliffe is not HP anymore. He threw that character away completely, did roles in indie movies, went to theater etc So there are ways to go away from typecasting if one is willing to struggle.
The thing with BL though it's different: it's under the genre of "Romance" but it has some big differences: 1. coming-out and homophobia/harassment subplots, 2. the Thai BL industry is problematic and 3. while LGBTQ+ =/= BL at the same time it gives people like us a way to see ourselves out there and enjoy stupid romance stories as any straight person can have. And for better or worse, the same applies to people who have MI. How would any of us, who struggle with MI, feel to have an actor go "Well, I played 2-3 characters with MI but it's time to move one and do roles to become a better actor" it sounds... bad, doesn't it? We all get what they mean but at the same time it can be insensitive because all MI people are not the same and their stories are worth to tell in the world. Same for BL roles. None is putting a knife around the necks of these actors when they decided to take on non-straight roles, and while wanting away from toxic fans is a legit reason, at the same time try to be more sensitive to some of the roles you play because sadly, there are groups out there in society who have it hard because of who they are.
As for the other part, I am not sad at all when my favourite actors/actresses do different roles. In contrast: I get very excited to see them do something new and different, because if someone can have the ability, capacity and opportunity to do more, then that profession is Art regardless of which field. I don't want to hold any of them down and keep doing what I want them too; I respect their profession and their hard work but at the same time I will also criticize their words and actions in regards to some topics.
I was planning to watch S2 until I found out what Perth and Mean said (Plan also agreed with them if I am not wrong) and what happened with Saint. Sadly, as an LGBTQ+ person I am disappointed. I get that the BL industry sucks, the fandoms can be super toxic and the high school setting can get boring after a while but lakorns are pretty much the same (story-wise) so the only exclusions here are crime, mystery and supernatural stuff which the BL world is seriously lacking and I hope in the upcoming months/years will start to change.
That being said, I don't like how the fans support these straight actors when they say stuff like "I won't do BL anymore because I want do grow as an actor". I am sorry for my wording but that's such a BS. BL is not an inferior genre; in fact it includes all the stuff straight romance does minus the coming out plots which is essential and important part of the non-straight characters. As I said, I get that the BL industry needs to look deeper in their issues, including ironically homophobia, but I also don't get why fans of these actors support them when they say stuff like that. Why don't these actors call out the industry instead? I will tell you why: they don't want to lose their fans, fame and money coming from it. So many of them took BL roles as a stepping stone to become rich and famous and once they achieve that, they disregard all that by saying "I won't do BL anymore. Maybe one day in the future if I need money and only with the partner of my ship". I can't believe people are falling for that excuse and then yell to others "We as fans should respect them and allow them to say and do as they please". Come back and tell me that when an actor says the same about a straight role, I dare you.
At the same time you have actors like this one https://twitter.com/LazySubber/status/1236279454936313858 or Saint, Bright, Singto etc to name a few who respect their job and don't see BL as limiting their capacity to work as an actor but rather just a different story to work with and explore as an artist. So instead, maybe you should all read their words and support people like them who respect BL instead of some guys who only use it as a stepping stone for their careers. BL industry is also suffering with that shitty fanservice they are making the actors go through. It's fine once in a while but too much creates toxic fans who don't know their limits. If some actors want out of it, I get it but I don't like how they come out and announce in the world how they are stopping BL to become "better actors".
Anyways, you are all free to enjoy what you want and continue watching and supporting who you want. But also don't lose your individual judgement to excuse some of what these actors say about BL and if some fans feel disappointed or angry about what they said in regards how they view BL, then let us be. Maybe if you all heard why some of us are angry instead of your "did/said nothing wrong" straight actors, you would understand that people can be held accountable on their words.
