I totally get where you’re coming from. I compromise now and then too, watching dramas just because they star actors or actresses I like and miss, even if the show itself isn’t great. 😂 For example, if a new drama starring Ni Ni came out, I’d probably watch it even if it wasn’t doing well. 😅

That said, it looks like we mostly agree on this drama—the story is indeed bland and boring too. I tried to be as patient as possible, but I eventually gave up and started watching at 2x speed, fast-forwarding through some scenes. 🙄

Anyway, that’s pretty much how I got scammed. 😅 I saw people celebrating the 8 rating, so I kept watching episode after episode, waiting for the climax and epicness… but there was none (and I’m already at episode 32).

As for the actor, I’m not too familiar with him, which is why I questioned whether it was a problem with the original material or his comedic performance. It might be a combination of both! As I mentioned, he did well in serious, intense, and dramatic scenes, but the comedic ones were more of a miss than a hit. That’s not unheard of; I’ve noticed that many actors excel in either serious or comedic roles but struggle with the other, even internationally.

Not really, the drama just finished airing today, so let's wait and see whether that rating is correct and holds up over time, plenty of dramas, even on MDL, get a rating close to 9 but gradually decline as months go by. I’d be surprised if this one stays at an 8.

That said, this is just my opinion—it wasn’t a great watch for me. But I’m glad others, like yourself, enjoyed it! 😊❤

I understand that not everyone is into Wuxia, and JOL wasn't a recommendation; I was simply sharing my experience with historical/Wuxia dramas this year.

As for the "rare 8" you mentioned, there must be a calculator error—for me, there’s no way this drama is even a 7 on Douban, let alone an 8. Also, 8s aren't as rare as you think. Just in the last year and the first half of this year, several dramas have scored over 8 on Douban, including: The Long Season (9.4), To the Wonder (8.9), Blossom Shanghai (8.7), Meet Yourself (8.7), Three-Body (8.7), An Ancient Love Song (8.6), Mysterious Lotus Casebook (8.5), The Knockout (8.5), Ripe Town (8.5), Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II (8.5), Nothing But You (8.2), Fake It Till You Make It (8.2), and Thirteen Years of Dust (8.1).

As for Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty 2, I haven't watched the first season yet, so I couldn't jump straight into season 2 when I saw it airing (I’m assuming they’re heavily connected!).

Not just desperate—I’m practically begging at this point xD.
I think Liu Shishi, Yang Yang, Zhao Lusi, and Cheng Yi all have dramas set to release this year, so hopefully, we’ll get some great content soon. In the meantime, I’ll try to finish this somehow, and then maybe take a break from C-dramas to watch a few K-dramas.

Aside from *JOL2* released earlier this year, I haven't come across a great new historical/Wuxia drama in 2024—and this one is no exception.

In the first part of the drama, I had to shutdown my brain to accept that the FL forgot everything about herself, yet somehow could do everything else perfectly fine. Their relationship during that phase was nice, but the lazy writing and repetitive scenes quickly became tiresome. For instance, every time the ML was about to confess that he isn't her husband, she'd say something, and he'd decide against it. How many times did that happen? 100? It sure felt like it.

When the truth finally came out, the ML's character took a nosedive—he became petty and pathetic, honestly unbearable to watch at times. And as for the comedic scenes, I'm puzzled. Was the character written like that in the novel, or is the actor just not good at playing silly and comedic roles? He does well in serious, intense, and dramatic scenes, but in the lighter moments, his facial expressions feel so forced, it’s hard to watch.

It's not just the ML—the other two leads are also poorly developed and frankly, unlikable. This is usually a red flag for me that the writer is likely female (just as some male writers struggle to write convincing female characters) and of course, no disrespect to female writers—there are many who do an excellent job: *LLTG*, *NLB*, *LBFAD*, *ROTP*... and so on.

I'll continue fast-forwarding just to see how it ends, but my expectations are low.

Welcome, my friends, to the glorious kingdom of garbage.

And the best part? The people cheering this on haven’t the faintest idea who’s shoveling this junk down their throats or why. They’re basically NPCs, happy to do as they’re told, blissfully unaware of the strings being pulled by their puppet masters. Gone are the days when you could sit back and enjoy a masterpiece like *My Mister* (9.4), *Hospital Playlist* (9.5), or *Signal* (9.2) without worrying that your ears might start bleeding from the nonsense. You didn’t have to lower the volume or nervously glance around, hoping no one walks in. But those days? Say your goodbyes, because soon enough it will be all about moaning and banging in your once beloved Korean dramas. Enjoy the ride to mediocrity, folks!

This drama reminds me of Welcome to Samdal-ri—there are a lot of similarities. I liked WTSR, but this one is better. If it keeps going like this, it's going to be one of the top Korean dramas of 2024. ❤️
