A lot of het dramas are written as wish-fulfillment fantasies for young people, that's why they have these perfect MLs who are always there to save the FL and help her with every problem.

I'm sure I've enjoyed a few het dramas with that kind of dynamic when I was younger, but now I prefer independent FLs with fully fleshed-out personalities and backstories. It's why I really like this screenwriter's take on romance. It's more mature and realistic than the many damsel-saving love stories in C-dramaland.

It's kind of funny how obvious it is that most people who comment on MDL articles of C-dramas don't read a single word beyond the title 😂 Oh well.

Usually we only get Chinese dramas AFTER they have become popular in other countries or they're predicted to be popular because they have famous lead actors. On the other hand, this drama has a few actors who were in The Double which is available in Germany too. Maybe that one did really well and the higher-ups at Netflix are hoping for this drama to have the same success? Who knows.

SMLs who chase after FLs are only typical for one genre: romance dramas aimed at young female viewers. It's not as common in other genres.
ML-centric dramas such as this one target a male (or all-gender) audience. These often have a few female characters who develop some kind of relationship (friends, companions or lovers) with the ML.

Plastic surgery is rampant in all entertainment and other industries where your appearance is one of your selling points. Trying to fit the industry's standards is part of the job. It is what it is. The pressure is so immense that I really wouldn't judge them for having low self-esteem. Even the most attractive people can feel insecure about themselves.

I think if people were really against such beauty standards, they would stop supporting/watching tv shows and movies that mainly show people with plastic faces and other cosmetic enhancements. If your favorite Korean actors didn't look like they do with the help of botox, nose jobs and so forth, would you still you like and watch them?
