I think Pete is wearing a layer of masks in order to appear the other way people expect him to. He conceals the broken parts within him with something false, he closes away the darkness inside and Vegas is undressing him to the point where all of him is exposed including the sides he never showed anyone. Vegas finally realized he's not alone in the world, he has the firsthand experience of the same form of trauma from his own father just like Pete had, they share the same pain just in different ways.
