Totally agree on this. I kept getting the sense that their relationship was unbalanced, and that silly breakup was just another confirmation. After they reunited, he was always the one more invested in the relationship (albeit not always in a healthy way) and willing to do whatever it takes to work things out. I thought there was nothing wrong with Yi Je wanting to study abroad and stand on her own two feet, but the way she left without any indication of wanting to continue the relationship when she returned made her seem callous.

Yi Jae is still prone to impulsiveness and emotional outbursts, and Soo Bin is still making significant decisions without discussing it with Yi Jae first (excluding her from the location scouting activities, stepping down as director). It’s like they’ve gone through so much and finally reunited but haven’t learned their lesson in how be a better partner and communicate with each other. Up to the end, they’re still stuck in the same cycle of hiding things / saying hurtful things to intentionally push the other away / not talking through their feelings properly, and it’s frustrating.

From the trailer, i was expecting a fun, old-fashioned romcom, but that wasn’t how things turned out. I also really like Hwang In Youp as an actor, but this wasn’t a standout role for him.

I wanted to like this, but found the whole thing somewhat disappointing. I was trying to pinpoint why, and other than the plot being more melodramatic than I expected and trying to do too much at once, I think it comes down to this: the minimal character growth and development for the leads (in terms of emotional maturity and behavior patterns) between high school and their 30s… [continued below] 👇

Nothing wrong with Yi Jae wanting to build her skills and confidence, and Soo Bin should support that. But I agree that the way this last-minute maybe-breakup is being handled is silly. If they're serious about each other — and the story leads us to believe that they are — why can't the conversation be "Will you wait for me until I can stand on my own?" rather than "I'm letting go of you to chase my dreams." It makes no sense, and at this point feels like stirring up drama for drama's sake... but who knows how they'll frame things in the last episode; could be that that preview is misleading.

Good point. Romance is just part of their complex relationship, and viewers going into the series expecting that to be the main focus might be disappointed. They're family and would do anything to protect each other and ensure the other has a good life. Even if they didn't rekindle their romantic relationship, I think that wouldn't change. She's his whole world, and he's her home.

Must be. Maybe the follow-up scene got cut and this part got missed. It's too bad... I would have liked to see what those two had to say to each other

Did I miss something or is this a plot hole? > So there's that brief scene where Tu Li finds Cen Ye as he's leaving work and calls him by name like she wants to talk to him. But we never get to see their conversation... I was expecting some kind of interesting scenario where they know each other or talk about their relationships with Chen Yi and Miao Jing, but nothing ever comes of it (it's in ep. 24, before they all run into each other at Chen Yi's apartment). Agreed. I don't think the scripts of some of his more recent works ("Shine on Me", "Youthful Glory") did him any favors. But he was fantastic in "Go Ahead" (2020), another emotionally charged role that let him show his acting chops like this one

I agree his physical reaction was rather melodramatic. It was more his expression that struck me the moment he heard the news — how you can see the shock, disbelief, and anger flashing in his eyes. It was a great bit of acting.

Your comments about memorable moments for Ye Xian (the wedding and funeral processions, Yan Yun's retrieval of his body on the battlefield) also stood out to me as some of the most moving and devastating scenes in the whole series, along with Ye Xian's reaction to learning Jin Zhao was engaged. His character arc and Winwin's sensitive portrayal — the emotional immaturity transforming into quiet protection and ultimately self-sacrifice —resonated with me even more than the leads' performances.

Your analysis of Ye Xian is spot on. The heartbreaking contrast between the wedding and funeral processions and his death (as well as both the ML's and FL's reactions to it) both hit me hard. For me, his character arc was the most compelling part of the series.

Seeing him come into his own and lead his father’s army was a fitting finale for his character. He made the ultimate sacrifice to defend his country and protect the person he cared about the most.

It reminds me of a quote: “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” I found both Yan Yun’s and Jin Zhao’s reactions to his death to be the most emotionally powerful moments in the whole series.

Ep. 39 reinforced my opinion that Ye Xian is the dark horse of this series — such a compelling character with the kind of development you rarely see for supporting roles.

I didn't want them to end up together, but did feel that the characters (and perhaps the actors) had more chemistry. Not romantic chemistry, but emotional chemistry. I felt more invested in their friendship and unrequited love than in the romance.

Well said. I agree with your character analysis. For me, it's not that I feel the 2ML is more likable or that I want him to end up with the FL. In fact, he's deeply flawed and as you pointed out, displays some very concerning behavior. It's more that I feel a stronger emotional pull between them than between the ML and FL. For me, I think it's a case of rooting for the underdog combined with sympathy for Ye Xian's loneliness and heartbreak.

I like the main couple's healthy relationship and the adoring way Yan Yun looks at Jin Zhao. Somehow I just find the 2ML/FL's friendship and unrequited love more compelling than the primary romance, and I guess that's not what I was expecting coming into a drama focused on their courtship, marriage, and experiences as a couple.

Zhang Ling He is one of my favorites for the way you can see the emotions in his gaze. This year's "Pursuit of Jade" and "The Best Thing" (2025) are some great examples

I also appreciate a mature, composed male lead. For me, it's less the character and more the couple's dynamic. When a series has romance genre elements, I want to feel some tension, some butterflies, a palpable connection between the leads. I like their healthy relationship, I'm just not feeling any of that spark.

Just finished episode 28 (the wedding). I'm assuming there will be a lot more developments coming, but at this point I just don't feel invested in the relationship between the main couple. I think this is the first C-drama where I've felt that way — not sure if it's the script, the actors' lack of chemistry, or both.

I agree. Winwin's performance, especially in emotional scenes, is impressive. His expression in episode 26 in the scene where Ye Xian learns that Jin Zhao is engaged — the shock, disbelief, and anger in his eyes — really struck me.

Does anybody else feel that there’s not much of a spark between the leads? I think Gu Jin Zhao has a more interesting dynamic with Ye Xian or even the cousin than with Chen Yan Yun. And having just watched ep. 26, it seems like she shows stronger emotions toward YX than she ever has toward CYY up to this point. Even though he’s a troublemaking little punk and needs to rein in his temper, I still like him and have sympathy for him — he’s sincere and clearly cares deeply for Gu Jin Zhao but just doesn’t know how to show it, probably because he hasn’t had much love in his life.

Maybe I just have a bit of second lead syndrome. Not so much that I wanted them to end up together, but I just think YX is a more interesting and layered character and feel more invested in what happens to him. By contrast, I’m finding CYY a little… bland maybe? I neither like nor dislike him very much as a character so far.
