I agree with you. The concept is novel and they tried to make it work but it was still a bit lacking. However, it was very gripping and I hope there'll be more shows like this. We can't even tell what's true or not because Lee Kang is an unreliable narrator.

I haven't read the book the series is based on but in addition to Lee Kang being a sociopath, he's also a pervert with a weird mix of mommy & abandonment issues.
It's why the Professor was jealous when he brought his wife flowers and was flirting with her. That part about him being "attracted" to his friend's mom is just a way to set up his character and the later scene where the Professor imagined him being intimate with his wife.
