A quirky, playful, subtle but so vividly colorful road-trip story of an unusual friendship between a grumpy, cynical, foul-mouthed man and a young boy desperately wishing to see his mom. Funny, heartwarming, non-sensical, dreamy, refreshing. An underrated gem from undeniably talented Beat Takeshi, covered by the incredible music of Hisaishi Joe!
One of the best rom-coms from Japan I've watched in a while! Like "Ossan's Love", it's a very refreshing and enjoyable story with superb performances: Adachi's inner monologues and battles, as well as Kurosawa's thoughts and feelings were the cutest xD A definite must watch!
The 1st episode was the weakest, with too much (imo unnecessary) gore, but it kept getting better after each episode. I found myself rooting for most of the main characters and my fave was by far Jae Heon ♡
A real story, with real people enduring everyday life, aging, illness and loss. Even though there were some rather forced scenes where the lack of subtlety was very obvious, the couple's genuine love and affection -through small gestures and gentle strokes- made this 'documentaristic' movie really heartbreaking, but so worth watching it!
"Do what you can do. Even if it's a small thing, it is still fine."
A beautifully shot slow paced 'documentaristic' slice-of-life movie that leaves you with a heartwarming, comforting, yet melancholic and nostalgic feeling.
Thank you both for this interesting article! You succeeded again in tempting me to add more titles in my PTW lists :)
Without even realizing it, I've already watched 5 of Yaguchi Shinobu's movies! My most fave among them is "Survival Family": I've watched it twice - the 2nd time with my family and they all liked it a lot! I also enjoyed "Wood Job", "Waterboys" & "Swing Girls", but I found "Dance with Me" the weakest. "My Secret Cache", "Happy Flight" and "ROBO-G" are probably the next ones I'll try :)
So engaging, quirky and unique!
Takahashi Issei was fascinating - the best choice for this role:)
You can give it a try :)
Thank you once more for this great article series!
