Now that we've seen the training photos, I saw an interesting post on Weibo about how these scenes could be used for the official character introduction.
The idea is to have a transition starting with Jiarui's martial arts training, specifically those close-ups of the hand seals, and then, the moment he 'throws' a talisman onto the screen, the scene changes to him fully characterized as Yun Jiuchuan with an impactful soundtrack.

Based on the character biographies and the world-building we've seen so far, it’s a mix of both. It’s a Xianxia/Xuanhuan (High Fantasy) at its core, but it uses a pseudo-historical setting as a backdrop.
​The story takes place in a world with imperial structures (like the 'Marquis’s Mansion' and the 'Duke of Qi'), which gives it that historical, political feel. However, the plot is driven by high fantasy elements: soul reincarnation, metaphysical sects (Xuan Clan), and the 'Heavenly Dao.' So, while the society looks historical, the rules of the world are purely supernatural and mystical.

I'd like to share this link I found on a very influential and followed account on Weibo. The images show behind-the-scenes set design and what appears to be the official poster design for Jiarui in the drama Soul Judgment of Jiuchuan (Hun Pan Jiu Chuan).

Yes!! I also saw that little paper doll, I thought it was super cute lol. From what I've been researching on that XHS link (the blue text), that doll is like a spirit storyteller who helps Jiuchuan! And you're right, it's going to be a mess separating humans from ghosts lol. I counted about 15 main characters in those leaks... there's everything: there's the ghost general Fu Yuan who is super old, the white tiger, but there's also the human side like his uncle who is an officer, his best friend who protected his soul for years, and even a family patriarch. The coolest thing is that it seems Jiarui will have a 'squad' of allies, both human and supernatural. It's going to be a crazy puzzle, but I'm already loving this mystery vibe! 😍😍🩷

"Yun Jiuchuan, once a genius of the Xuanmen clan, returns to the world of the living as the 'Terror of the Underworld', inhabiting a broken, borrowed vessel. Lacking vital fragments of his soul, he is spiritually unbalanced, explaining his chaotic and rebellious persona. To prevent his body from decaying and to recover his lost essence, he opens the 'Shop of All Things,' solving supernatural cases to accumulate divine merit. Alongside a White Tiger spirit and a team of outcasts, he must race against time to uncover the truth behind his own death and the betrayal that shattered his soul."

I totally understand your confusion! Based on everything I've read about this drama so far, from the early leaks to the official Douban page, here is my personal take on these different versions.
​About that "sharing a body" part, it actually comes from the very first technical sheet and rumors we saw a few weeks ago. According to that initial synopsis, the protagonist Yan Jiuchuan is the reincarnation of the Heavenly Punisher, which is basically a powerful deity or a celestial force responsible for executing divine justice. He has this massive, godly soul trapped in a frail, short-lived body.
​It was also mentioned that he might share a mystical connection with a character named Zuo Ya, who is the Master of the Tianguan Pavilion. In that version, Zuo Ya supposedly holds a fragment of the kind soul from Jiuchuan’s previous life. This creates a dynamic of attraction and repulsion between them, which is probably why people are talking about sharing souls or fragmented identities.
​However, I want to make it clear that this is just my interpretation based on all the reports I’ve gathered. Since the official Douban synopsis is a bit more vague, we can't be 100% sure if the final script will follow these early details exactly. The official page now focuses on Yun Jiuchuan and his Shop of All Things, where he solves mysteries to recover his soul fragments.
​Regarding the novel, even though the director mentioned there’s no official link, it’s clear they might have shared some similar concepts at the start. But from my point of view, this project was rebuilt as a male-centric journey specifically for Jiarui. It’s a new story with its own identity!
