Gosh, I absolutely love this interpretation! I admit, I simply looked at it as a further indication that Xueji remained her true self throughout it all - empress or not, I can and I will climb the tree - but your insight makes so much sense.
Yesss, I simply adored the way it was always HIM actively seeking her out. From the very beginning she seemed like a calming presence to him, a solace, even when it wasn't romantic yet, and it added a nice layer to their relationship.

Towards the end of the drama it was the scenes between these two that I was waiting for the most, everything else be damned (sorry Miantang and Xingzhou, I swear I liked you too) . It was such a great, great dynamic, with quiet, yet constantly growing fondness that in the end evolved into a truly wonderful love. This is how you do a second love trope right!
(This storyline also made me fall hopelessly in love with Chang Huasen, so that's an added bonus, lol)
I really, reaaaaaaally hope he breaks through to mainstream like Ke Chun seems to be doing (fingers freaking crossed it works out for him!) because he's so so talented, and so goddamn attractive and cries so beautifilly I could watch forever 😍
