i don’t necessarily hate that kdramas don’t have 16 episodes as a standard anymore, but there should REALLY be more room in the industry for judging when a 16 ep drama would be a better fit, and when a 12 or 14 ep is better. this drama is the perf example of this. it was an amazing 14 ep drama, but at 16 episodes it would have been unparalleled i think

Btw, was it ever explained why/how Dan Shim ended up as a royal consort at the beginning? I just don't understand…
i think he "liked" her in the only way a genuine psychopath can like someone: she "was his brother’s", and like a jealous little kid, he wanted what his brother had. so to me it made sense even if it wasn’t explicitly described. might be that im reading too much into that one scene where he says he wants her to become "a part of his nation" (or whatever the phrasing was), but thats how i interpreted this whole thing

Title My Royal Nemesis Spoiler
as someone who lost both my grandpa followed by my grandma in the last two years, that scene with seori and her grandma had me bawling, but in a good way.

when my own grandpa died i didn't make it in time since i live out of town, but i got it recounted by my sister—how he was doing the movements of washing cups and "passing them" to her. this was their daily ritual for years when she was a kid; she would sit at the kitchen counter and dry the dishes, while he washed them. i think that was his "bus stop"—his happy place, the last thing he saw before he passed, just like shin seori’s grandma.

fortunately, i got to be present when my grandma passed. she briefly opened her eyes, looked at me, drew a strained, deep breath—and as all tension eased from her face, i watched her take her last. just like in this scene. what got me wasn't that it was sad, it was the grandma's calm as she looked at seori for the last time and how the scene lingered long enough to let us see seori's reaction and grief to the grandma's dead body.

bless our grandparents, both those who are still with us and those who have passed. im so greateful for experiencing that love🥺

exactly what I thought. 50 year old man married to a gorgeous 37 year old woman makes no sense. well they are…
u have never seen a woman who is tg with someone around 10 years her senior?? that's not really an uncommon pairing at that age

it's not a kdrama tho
LMFAO😭 god forbid adult men being mature enough in their love so that they are able to be happy for the person they love. that is what genuine love looks like. being happy for them for being in a good relationship, while also grieving what didn’t come to be.

if someone is not capable of holding the emotional complexity that comes w genuine love, that’s a character flaw. too many people conflate attachment that their ego depends on for self-worth with love. nothing more wimpy and pathetic than a jealous man who doesn’t view women as people worth doing nice things for or caring about unless they’re his gf or wife.

I really hate how physical violence from the female side is somehow normalized within some female communities…
there are different standards to male and female physical aggression bc it’s not the same period.

both of them are equally wrong as an ISOLATED ACT, violence is never okay, but at the end of the day, a man can slap a woman to the ground and she would in 98% of cases not be strong enough to physically stand a chance against him. a woman can’t slap a man to the ground, and a man can in theory physically apprehend a woman. so that makes it different. i don’t think it’s good to equate these two types of violence.

there are ofc a lot of cases with female on male domestic violence where the woman is violent and the man is not able to defend himself bc he goes into a freeze response bc it happens within something that should be a safe space. in addition, a lot of men just don’t have the aggression to "defend" themselves by beating someone back, especially not a woman. with all of this in mind, it’s difficult for men to speak up, bc society makes an idea that men cannot be the victims of violence at the hands of women bc they are usually physically stronger. this is simply not the case.

however, like u said the context still matters. a man being slapped once in a moment of rage (by someone from Joseon like someone pointed out) is not the same as a man being the victim of domestic violence. conflating the two doesn’t serve real victims. he was deliberately provoking her and saying hurtful shit. kdramas should in general stay clear of the slaps for theatrics’ sake bc it’s toxic af and normalizes it. however, if there is one character where it ACC feels justified and makes sense, it’s here.

Ok - first we got the wrist kiss, then the head on her shoulder - what will be next ? These things should always…
its sooooo intimate and beautiful. i have often been missing those small, really intimate moments of physical affection in kdramas. i feel like in a lot of kdramas i have seen, they often build up to the kiss and then they barely even hug afterwards, and it sucks!! but this show has done such a good job at it, in addition to filing for love and perfect crown (but nobody does it like this show). they all kept the small moments of intimacy going to the end and i love every second of it!!!

Does grandpa know that Mun Do is a psychotic ball of soot and has killed so many family members?!!!!
has he killed family members??? anyways, i think he’s starting to suspect him for being shady towards segye since he put mundo at the US office when mundo wanted segye there. i think he’s testing him actually. grandpa doesn’t seem stupid nor out of touch

IDk why they keep calling Se Gye a green flag he really isn't he's actualy a bit toxic and obsessed but he's nice…
agreed for sure, but i think ppl get confused cuz he is also INSANELY vulnerable w her (which is good to be if u want ur relationship to last). like he puts it aaaaall out there, the man has no shame or inhibitions. he has absolutely no patience for games, and it’s refreshing for an "arrogant CEO" type of character. at the same time it’s the toxic sides like u said, and i feel like that’s his ego that he’s been working so hard to maintain in order to protect himself in that ruthless family, and when he’s with seori, it almost looks like he’s been DYING to let it go, bc if we remember the flashback scene from when he met his evil cousin for the first time, he was really sweet towards him

What are you talking about?
i don’t normalize it in the name of romance, but at the end of the day this is fiction. there are much more problematic aspects kdramas collectively endorse on a greater scale than this one drama’s main couple. i also don’t think kdramas have become dogshit, i started watching dramas in 2022 and when i have tried watching some of the older really well-loved and popular romcoms (2015-2020 ones), i truly found many of them extremely problematic, much more than this one or any other recent drama. some of them i could not even finish, but i still understand why ppl love them.

however, if i were to start picking apart all of the smaller aspects that i acc find problematic in dramas the entire purpose of kdramas would be gone for me tbh. aka i want something that allows me to get a little bit lost in it without having to think about all the problems of the "real world".

i’d also appreciate it if u didn’t assign opinions to me which i don’t have (like my pov being that only the 2MCs are supposed to be accountable). also, i have yet to watch episode 10, but i think there is plenty of room to explore the problematic aspects of the relationship in the remaining episodes, and i really hope they do, and i hope there is accountability and consequence, so completely agree w u there! also, relationships between manager and employee is not inherently problematic if it’s done correctly (aka HR is informed immediately so they can take steps).

while they did not do that, LBR, it would also not be very fun to watch them immediately going to HR and informing them, and there being no room for comedy of them trying to play it cool for a couple of days. also, remember, it’s been A COUPLE of days since they got tg in the drama. it’s not like they’re going months and months w a secret relationship. i agree w u on many of ur perspectives, but i think ur coming on a little too strong in expressing them and being so black and white about it.

no.
no ur not a hater for not liking it nor expressing not liking it. ur a hater bc u actively go on comments of people who are excited about it and write how much u dislike it and call ppl braindead and say really shitty stuff about ppl who like it! that’s literally the definition of being a hater.

wouldn’t it be more positive for everyone, but mostly for urself, to go engage with comments about dramas that u actually enjoy?? and write what u dislike about my royal nemesis in a constructive review? why spend sm energy being negative?

ohhh u must be very fun at parties😭but fr if ur not up for the party, don’t go to it? it says RIGHT THERE in the description what this drama is about. life is more fun and positive if u spend ur time watching dramas that actually appeal to u!! either way, no need to be so dogmatic about it.

also if i wanted to see corporate life without a romantic lens i can just look up from the computer screen at work LMFAO🥹

personally, i think this has to be the craziest run of kdramas in a loooong time, they have all had me sitting at the edge of my seat gasping, laughing and giggling. i obvi had high expectations of perfect crown (which it did meet, even tho it def has had some weaker points, but for me its strong points make up for it), but the two other ones took me by complete surprise!!! and it makes me in such a good mood!!

All this is silly. It's a fantasy drama taking place in an alternative universe, talking about historical accuracy…
i think the handling and expectations to people working on the show is unfortunate, but i wouldnt go so far as to say it's moronic, bc it's not just ANY historical inaccuracy. i completely agree w that the connotations of the historical inaccuracy are very unfortunate

I hope so too! I mean, the first scenes of ep 8 were really fun already. And now they cleared up all misunderstandings…
me too!!! i hope they do his character some justice and that he finds some happiness on his own divorced from his wife. he has been having "high-functioning" depression from literally start to finish. such melancholy in that face lmao

This might not be for me. I haven’t watched many episodes but the comments about both leads having multiple…
to me the comments were worse than the show lmao. read some of the comments before watching ep8 for example and thought "oh ffs kinda don’t want to watch it", to only be sat there thinking some of us must have watched different shows lmao. i also think the exes part is handled well up until now
