You might be on to something. Not an impossible theory I feel.

I am even thinking as far as it being Ken's original fragment. The part of him that was ripped away when he became immortal. He's lived for 200 years, that energy has to manifest somewhere. If so, this would turns the entire mystery into a psychological tragedy rather than just a standard "catch the villain" police chase.

I read 'melody' as a metaphor for the softness, the vulnerability, the emotional resonance and 'shadow' as the dark dangerous circumstances. So it's like all these beauty being forced to exist underneath the darkness.

'Shadow' however is also framed here as a safe haven cos it's only when they're away from the public eye is where the characters can strip away their guards and let their real "melody" emerge.

"never" is not the right word here i'm afraid. he did in most of their scenes in this episode, with the exception of that scene in their office (15mins in). even so, there's some moments here they locked eyes. that's when he drops his guard, in response to what james was saying .... "speaking of which you came to me first? doesn't that break the rules?"

you'll also find him looking at james in the eye during stand-offs, cos that's when he's daring james to read his mind.

Them taking turns stripping off their outer layers carries way more heat and raw emotion than most BL make-out or NC scenes. It isn't hasty or over-eager. They even pause midway a few times just to meet each other's lips. I can practically feel the heavy breathing, and honestly, the sheer amount of calories burned in that moment alone! 😅

And then when James slowly unbuttons Ken’s jeans and lets them slide down, it doesn't even feel like undressing isn't it? It feels like Ken is finally letting go of a heavy burden he's carried for years.
