Unfortunately a good idea ruined by terrible execution. I don't know if the writing is half-assed or the editing just threw out any scenes that actually fleshed the story out, but the ADHD pacing makes this show unwatchable.
Dramas are usually pretty cheap everywhere, so it's not too surprising that the CGI is bad, but really sometimes it has justt been amazingly bad. It's getting a lot better though, recently C-Dramas just *look* better and even have some level of cinematography. Historical dramas (non Wuxia/Xianxia) will generally not have a lot of CGI. There can be some crappy green screen moments but it is limited. Wuxia will generally have supernatural stuff though, or historically impossible mechanisms that they use CGI for. (Honestly plain historical dramas are 100x better imo) One thing that seems to be a constant for you is that you just like to have more exposition than C-Dramas sometimes give. It's a subjective thing, I like not getting a lot of introduction to something as it feels more natural and also gives you a chance to piece things together
