Hello, I'm contemplating this, i didn't watch it back then because of all the comments about the FL, but like…
Hi! I love the romance between the ML and FL to bits 😔💕 I didn’t know what to expect since I just relied on the Mystery/Romance tags and read the synopsis above. Safe to say I came for the mystery but I stayed for their romance.
The development between the leads was just so well done in my opinion, given their premise—i.e., how do you navigate your arranged marriage to someone you don’t trust (for valid reasons) but are attracted to in some manner? Hence a lot of miscommunication and a lot of figuring out how to meet each other in the middle. And that just makes their relationship all the more earned, especially when they realise they have common goals/principles.
There are other couples, and one is a “dead dove” ship (lol you’ll know what I mean if you watch it), and I think they served their purpose well enough for the plot but I didn’t care about them the way I cared about the ML/FL ship.
Just finished this one. The story was tight enough for me not to drop it (looking at you, blossom 2024).. The…
I really, really want to applaud the creative team for choosing to execute a not-rushed, "actual" happy ending. Like, we got a whole arse pregnancy announcement, birth, and post-story epilogue with not just one but two (!) kids!! Take notes peopleee
I guess it's to make up for the very heartbreaking deaths we got in eps 30-31 but still!
Just finished this one. The story was tight enough for me not to drop it (looking at you, blossom 2024).. The development between the ML& FL was done well. Their disagreements were reasonable and made sense, and the progression of their skinship also made sense (like not too prudish but not too crazy?? looking at you, destined 2023
Some simple wishes I have… 1. For the ML to gain some weight for this role like he did for Shen Du 2. For the FL and ML to sing a duet again for the OST
This was my first cdrama lol (not counting the original Taiwanese Meteor Garden) and I feel like it gave the groundwork for what I could expect from cdrama then on. I think I grew a soft spot for the crazy FL-calmer/general ML pairing. Kinda reminds me of tsundere males paired with lively females in anime/manga.
Sadly I cannot remember the story that well anymore since I preferred the first arc (till ep 15) while they were at the border over the capital arc. The comedy was the best in the first 10 eps too.
I stopped at ep 27 and have been reluctant to continue, the romance isn't hitting and neither is the story (maybe historical drama fatigue on my end)…
Since this is based on an IP by Zhi Zhi, is this faithful to the novel? It seems more popular than The Sword and The Brocade which is another Zhi Zhi work adapted into a cdrama, but is there anyone out there who has seen both and can tell me if The Sword and The Brocade is better? Thanks
Just finished binge watching and I can agree with the comments that say the first part was better. The adventure aspect of hunting down the first 2 body parts was entertaining, while TY and YH's romance was being developed. Not sure where it all started going downhill. Too much "death" and MC revival scenes.
FYI, I would say the ending was not a full happy ending cause of the timelapse. And how annoying that they put the ending scene as the first part of the ending credits 🤣
I've binged around 5 cdramas the past 2 weeks including this and this was the one that got me to rewatch in between the other shows. If you had no idea/ dgaf who Ding Yuxi is (hence, no fangirl bias), you'd probably be more forgiving of the FL (which was my experience at least, lol). Live comments on Viki were sometimes polarising (some being on the FL's side and some on the ML's) which reflect how misunderstandings can really cause diff. reactions.
This show definitely has flaws and relies on some tropes but it's got a lot of heart (and a pretty unforgettable confession scene). Each ep I was wondering why the title was Melody of [the] Golden Age, only for them to do a satisfying title drop at the last ep, which emphasised to me the theme/s of the show and how every good change was fought for.
My first watch was on Viki. Also watched on iQIYI. Both subs were great. Don't bother with the YouTube subs.
I will probably leave a proper review and not just a comment to talk about certain aspects of the show.
I thought I was gonna watch this for the General (2ML) but he turned out to be the weakest link 😭😭 just so dry and was hard carried by the 2FL; even his lieutenant had a much more entertaining love story…
Loved the main couple, they were so easygoing in their BTS. Hope to see Tian Xiwei and Aoi RuiPeng pair up again
I asked for recos for a slow burn romance wuxia drama with no love triangles and this was one of the suggestions. I should’ve added that I preferred something light hearted too because this story is so emotionally taxing. Everyone is so evil. The FL is great but I have zero desire to watch this after hanging on for 29 episodes and being rewarded with *drumroll* my favourite character being killed off 🤣
If anything I’ll pay more attention to the story tags instead of just word of mouth 😅
The Romance of Tiger and Rose is a gem and a must-watch—it’s like watching sparks fly while laughing your…
Thank you!! Will check out The Romance of Tiger and Rose, and Who Rules The World (I do love action), The Last Immortal, and The Double!
I’ve heard of The Long Ballad before LLTG as I was actually a fan of Dilraba in Ten Miles of Peach Blossom and Eternal Love of Dream but I don’t remember being convinced to check out The Long Ballad that time. Now I see Leo Wu and Zhao Lu Si are in it?? omg lol might give it a skip since I kinda wanna see other actors/actresses haha.
Is there a similar slowburn period drama /wuxia that has great chemistry between the ML and FL but no love triangles/second leads also interested in one of the mains? Recos please, thanks.
Almost done with this show and it definitely was a surprise hit for me. I want to give a different viewpoint to…
"I think this is the first time I have seen two truly introverted main characters."
This made me LOL! Spot on observations! But also surprising? I only just started C-drama in 2021 (pretty late) and haven't watched a lot so it's interesting that there aren't many introverted MCs in C-drama depicted well???
So I just finished ep 12 and I'm not sure I want to continue. I don't know if I'm up for the shards arc and the direction of the plot. I started watching cause I was looking for wuxia/xianxia with a good story and romance but no love triangles, and I'm not sure this is gonna make me happy in the long run. Any other recommendations? My other faves are General's Lady and The Imperial
I have never watched a Chinese drama except for the very first Meteor Garden (which isn't even Mainland Chinese but Taiwanese if I recall correctly). I just saw a clip of ep 2 of this drama on YouTube and was so amused so I thought I'd give this a shot. Ended up binge-watching it in 2 days and I still rewatch clips occasionally.
Contrary to some of the comments, I actually think the FL undergoes some character development and has her mature moments in the latter episodes during the Capital arc (you'd have to have some serious tunnel vision if you didn't think she matured a little or at least understood that a lot of the bickering and conflict was mostly playful banter). The General's devotion and faithfulness is unmatchable, though.
The first few eps were more comedic, and I enjoyed the Border arc (eps 1-16ish) because the setting felt warmer and the characters were goofier I guess. The Capital arc (ep. 16ish-30) was more serious but was still enjoyable and painted a more mature picture of the drama. Overall, the story progression of this drama was entertaining. The cold-general-becoming-warm trope was brought justice by Caesar Wu, and his chemistry with Tang Min, who was a force to be reckoned with all on her own, was really the best thing about this drama.
But I came to this page just to say that I really like the poster 🤣🤧 I love the contrast between the chase and the roller skating

(EDIT: the leads sing the ending song which makes it all the more cute 😅 https://youtu.be/23-tNAQgFu0?feature=shared)

- HMH's acting
- Zhou Ye's acting
- something going wrong halfway
- enjoyed from start to finish
- Su Ying was the better villain
