FIYS is controversial because of the book it's based on. The author is believed to have plagiarized both from another piece of work and on real people/incidents. The Chinese audience didn't support the drama adaptation of the book, and the drama production itself was later hit with plagiarism allegations regarding logos used in the drama and whatnot. In short, it was a mess. For the international audience, who would be less familiar with these 'internal matters,' of course they watched without such concerns and for that reason, FIYS is more of an international success as compared to its domestic consumption.

All of which is to say, its low Douban rating is probably less about the drama per se and all the controversy that follows that drama.

He was already the Crown Prince, so what you saw was Li Ni getting crowned as the emperor after his father abdicated. About ten years later, consistent with Li Ni's long held desires, he abdicated the thrown in favor of his cousin - and the original Crown Grandson. He, Cui Lin, and their two kids then returned to guarding the border at Laolan Pass (along with Chang Er/Ear and TaoZi/Peach).

Everyone lives (Cui Lin had been thought dead at one point). Li Ni's father steps down resulting in Li Ni becoming the emperor and Cui Lin his empress. She learns she's pregnant. Has her baby; it's a boy. And then after a passage of time, Li Ni hands the throne back over to his cousin (the crown grandson) and when the drama ends, Li Ni and Cui Lin are living at Laolan Pass with their TWO children (boy and girl) along with Taozi/Peach and ChangEr/Ear. :)

The former crown princess makes a similar observation later on about how the second brother has just enough smarts to cause trouble and be a thorn in the side. Fortunately, not so bright as the leads though so while he causes trouble, it's not anything they can't get out of!

I’ve only watched 40 and skimmed 39 (and am otherwise watching on Viki with its delayed schedule 😭) but based on your question, and what I observed from 40, sounds like LCY swapped the pills and actually saved her life.

It's the power combination of Li Ni and A'Ying that's the "problem." That's why it wasn't a problem when the other sons were being considered.

It’s also a fairly common practice, especially with the popular dramas. So it should not be considered a bad thing - on the contrary, it’s an indicator that the platform thought they could earn more money because the drama is one people are eager to watch.

He’s annoying and frequently causes trouble for our main leads, but never really a threat as our leads are smarter and more capable than him! So I would say he’s bearable in that regard. Just be prepared to hate him and mentally groan/eye roll every time he’s on screen. 😂
