Such a ridiculous movie. Very cheesy to start but by the end was won over by the beautiful smart and determined women (not the stupid men). The honking, surgery, foot/freezer and final fight scenes were funny and worth watching!
IDK, I liked this as a commentary on the brutality of idol training. It delved into the vacuousness, backbiting and insecurities that are likely rife in the industry to present the consequences as horror— You’re a mistake, casualty or discard if not just a bad copy of what the industry thinks you should be. I saw a lot of parallels with Muses of Star Empire in how harsh and pointlessly cruel a hit factory can be
Really adorable and fun family movie with great martial arts action! The scene where the son first unleashes his amazing dancing taekwondo style was very cool (with a moonwalk no less)!
Leaving soon on Tubi (it’s subbed there). I would buy this to have on hand as a fun comfort movie rewatch
I don’t have more to say about this well done, well acted but not highly original series except PSW’s hair looked really terrific! And both he and Kim Bum had some emotional scenes that made this worth watching for me.
I’m almost finished with this; I’m not sure it’s one you watch for any specific actor. I watched for Park Sung Woong and since the storyline is about a team no single character really stands out. It’s a good show if you enjoy police procedurals with a bit of spycraft and political conspiracy.Kim Bum seems really underused though his role seems to be getting bigger as the series comes to an end
I took this as an exploration of how privilege can stunt you and harm others. So Young put her friends in this situation not appreciating they don’t have the same resources to fall back on. She is so spoiled she seems to think running away will just magically work out, she will get that audition, etc. When this fails she can magically pull out a credit card (meanwhile, her friends have already gone through some serious abuse and trauma due to this unnecessarily dangerous and precarious situation). Her refusal to accept responsibility and the fallout for her friends was so frustrating and sad
Yet again a bunch of action with the explanation at the end. Both storylines really strained belief. Especially the casual rape while standing on a hill in the rain (and what led up to that). But also wanting his wife to wake up (why? She hated him and would probably never forgive him). I guess we were supposed to just go, “Oh well, that just shows he’s a psycho” (which they seemed to say outright at the end) but felt very shallow.
The casting also seemed questionable (why was Min Woo so attractive and not at all physically similar to Kang? Is that how Kang sees himself and if so, why?). Just seemed unrealistic and to force the twist. Or maybe this was to suggest all psychopaths really see themselves as outrageously attractive? I doubt that’s true!
FL and NGM were great. Also liked seeing Oh Jung Se as a smirking thug…But this wasn’t a great movie
Seems like there are so many B movies that do this: Play out the action then spend the last 20-30 minutes giving backstory to explain what happened. I kind of like it but in this movie it was very confusing.
Someone on Letterboxd said they imagined the filmmakers found the car camping trend annoying, wanted to terrorize car campers in a movie and then worked backward from there to form a plot. I agree with that idea 😅
So sad and horrific. How did Hye Won have the privilege to not get beaten down by this awful society? I think it was explained by Bok Nam calling her unkind. One was built to flee and protect herself and the other was built to obey and protect others (like her daughter and crappy friend).
I liked how the slaughter at the end revealed the doubts and weaknesses of the old hags who were sustaining this incredibly unjust society (like the matriarch screaming that she’s been treading water there since she arrived at age 15 and was going to “find the men” (kill herself?!). The men were disgusting and awful but also only valued for their brute strength. Ugh. Life was nothing but survival and seeking comfort through avoiding abuse (or doling it out)
There’s a pathetic sliver of happiness in that Bok Nam did make it to the mainland, experienced some kindness and got to spend her last moments with her beloved (horrible) friend. And that Hye Won will live in guilt and torment for the rest of her life due to her selfish choices
I think the ending was intentionally absurd and unsatisfying to illustrate how FL just would never get justice because of the family’s wealth and power. So her final act was the only thing she could do in her mind, she felt she didn’t have any reason to live and felt completely discarded. I think we were supposed to be angry and think WTF…Not that any of this made me really enjoy the movie
The tags make this sound like a porn movie but it seems more like a dark comedy exploring what happens when you don’t live with connection. Everyone is estranged and seeking physical connection elsewhere. Horrors of the Korean War are unearthed in the opening scene but played for laughs when ML falls into the pit. ML’s suffering (physical and war-related) is ignored using sex as a distraction. The child is an extreme example of how ignoring the real issues can lead to unintended consequences
I just read a book theorizing that the military, immigrant labor and sex work laid the foundation for modern Korean economy; which also seemed to be big themes in this movie. ML, son of immigrants is victimized in the military and returns home to find his parents gone and that he has no real home. The movie ends with what seems to be a return to his roots (thought that part was really beautiful and think it was intentionally obscure, evoking his foreign experience)
Cute but I didn’t find it shallow; sex is a big deal and I liked the way this is illustrated from the virgin’s perspective, the sex kitten’s perspective and even just regular older lady’s perspective (as well as the perspective of various men ranging from jaded to in love). The frank discussions and humorous yet touching situations were also good! Plus touched on sexual harassment, sex and work dynamics. SFL was really terrific, commanding yet kind, wise and vulnerable
The school for mentally deficient part wasn’t in the movie. Maybe it was in the story this is based on? Sweet…
Wikipedia’s description is taken from an interpretation of the novel. So it really doesn’t reflect the movie (which seems to be a sanitized version of the novel). I can’t even say if that interpretation is accurate since I didn’t read the novel (I am now reading the book that contains this interpretation and it seems to be purely the writer’s opinion with no supporting evidence by other writers, critics or the author of the novel)
Fun and touching! Watched for Park Sung Woong; his role his disappointingly one-dimensional (just smirking and displaying his vaunted charisma) until a slightly surprising humorous turn! The FL was so stoic yet endearing. Really liked how the backstory was revealed and the sympathetic portrayal of the main villains (and of course the self-discovering journey of the rakish ML)
Had an old fashioned swashbuckling creature feature feel to me with a nice mix of humor, sentimentality and action. The monster on the palace roof gave big King Kong vibes! Watched for Park Sung Woong, disappointed his character wasn’t more complex (but he is still great in whatever he does with his lethal hauteur)
Leaving soon on Tubi (it’s subbed there). I would buy this to have on hand as a fun comfort movie rewatch
