Fans of Xianxia will really like this !

Plot is a typical popcorn xianxia webnovel. If you like it, you'll love this, if not you'll hate this.

It's good, engaging and really fun to watch.

The makeup and costumes are great, similar and not straying much from the manhwa. The plot has not been changed much from the source material either, so again if you really like popcorn xianxia novel, you'll love this.

The editing/cutting is very aggressive, similar to that of a manhwa. There are very few boring parts as mentioned earlier, the editing cuts out everything that isn't central to the plot. You can just turn off your brain, grab some popcorn and enjoy this manga that has come to life.

There are almost zero creative "changes" done for the sake of adapting it to a tv show, so again if you dislike such genres, you'll hate this otherwise it's really good. The CG is colorful and spectacular, more or less a straight copy of the manga.

There's a reason why there was a boom of WN in china with kids and adults.
Not many people who are overworked to death, tired after a day's work like to watch/read a serious drama, but often are happy watching face-slapping novels.

People already have so many problems that we dun wanna read, watch or hear of 3 more body problems.

A complete waste of time

When watching anime, there is a 3-Episode Rule, which is basically if it does not get good within 3 episodes, drop it.

Many dramas, especially chinese dramas do not adhere to this rule and starts off very, very slow. where the first 2 episodes are a complete waste of time explaining the background of characters. K-dramas on the other hand, usually adhere to this rule by giving you a very thrilling first episode.

Recently however, kdrama are moving towards ignoring this rule. This is one great example, where not only the first 3 episodes are a complete waste of time, but numerous segments of later episodes are also designed to waste your time and bore you to death.

It's difficult scoring this show as honestly, it's an extremely boring show and watching it to the end is a test of your patience. Perhaps you might have enjoyed the show or certain parts of the show, but you cannot deny that Dramas often live and die by it's plot, as we're better off watching theater for it's acting, or a musical for it's music.

I get that it's trending, but also remember that Netflix-And-Chill is a thing, where people just let their TV run and chill.

Skip the first 2 episodes out of 8 for a good time?

Another netflix drama that topped the charts with an incredibly boring first few episodes.

what makes this even worse is that this only has 8 episodes.

How do you actually review a drama that bores you to death the first 2 episodes and only gets good after a third of a show?

Always remember with netflix shows that netflix and chill is a very real thing, as people get so bored with the show they're watching that they do something else while the show is running. Netflix collects this data and thinks that people are watching the show when clearly, they're already busy making the next generation of humans or have left to do something else.

It's disappointing that korean dramas, especially those that are adapted from the best korean webcomics are portrayed with so many pacing issues, when in actual fact, the manhwa hits hard with every chapter or else they'd fall off the list.

Even more disappointing, is that this show is marked as a comedy, when the comedy is the misunderstandings that aren't really funny.

If you're looking to a show that's actually much better but very similar, perhaps A Psychopath's Diary is a much better watch ( https://mydramalist.com/37255-psychopath-diary )

Just Skip Episode 1

During WW2, the Nazi and the Japanese were well known for conducting Human experiments.

While we have had many Hollywood movies regarding the Nazis experiment, the cruel Japanese human experiments and its unit were much more secretive.

Regardless, this show is basically a What if the Japanese had succeeded in creating monsters.

Besides this, not more of the cruelties and war crimes were shown or mentioned, showing a rather tame and orderly Japanese occupation when this was not the reality of the occupation.

The show is packed with action if you skip episode 1, which really has no purpose besides setting the background of the world and the characters purposes for taking action.

Typical of an action drama, the plot is nothing to write home about but the action scenes are well worth your time

If you skip episode 1, you're in a really good action drama.

A decent adaptation of "The Good Doctor"

Firstly, this is an adaptation of the US Drama, The Good Doctor, where the main character is an autistic savant and not suffering from Asperger's.

At only 16 episodes, this is a relatively short drama and a rather different medical drama, where it's about the main character struggles with autism and his insecurities.

While the description on MDL states that it's Asperger's syndrome, this is not true and Asperger's is not mentioned anywhere in the drama at all. There is also another review criticizing the drama solely because Asperger's syndrome is not portrayed well in the drama, which again, is based on incorrect information.

In all the adaptions of the Good Doctor and it's original US Drama, the main character has autism, and never Asperger, and it should be the same for this adaptation as well. As the description is translated by another MDL user, it should be a mistranslation as Asperger's is on the spectrum of Autism (probably machine translated).

That said, this drama does has it's difference from the US and KR counterparts. Ignoring the obvious medical cases, plot and characters, one main difference this drama has, is that most, if not all of the characters in the show are very, very encouraging and supportive of the MC compared to it's other iterations where the MC has to constantly prove himself, which makes this a very heartwarming drama.

Finally, the other reviewer solely criticizing the show for it's bad portrayal of Asperger's and gave it a very harsh score which I think is unfair, as again, it's never mentioned that the MC actually has Asperger's in the show and it should be a mistranslation on MDL's description as Asperger's and Autism are both on on the Autism Spectrum and very similar.

A very good xianxia if you ignore how every fight scene is finger pointing.

This is basically a live action Naruto drama.

Almost every action/fight scene is basically the characters doing hand signs and finger pointing so if you want more acrobatics/traditional action scenes, you should just watch Sword & Fairy 4 instead.

That said, this drama is superior to Sword & Fairy 4/Chinese Paladin 4 which is airing around the same time due to it's pacing.

A really good adaption of the game, doesn't really stray off from the source too much.

Costumes and sets are done really well too.

Also this drama has more romance than Sword & Fairy 4, and seems to be similar to Sword & Fairy 1 where there is heartbreak. So if you want to avoid or don't like romance, watch Sword & Fairy 4 instead.

A Boring RomCom That Glorifies The Medical Profession

If you know any doctors, or know anyone in the medical profession in Korea, than you'd know that this show is completely unrealistic. The majority of doctors in korea are elites or well off, and what awaits them is a life thats far better than the majority of the population after the first few years of training.

Back to the show, this show is a romcom that uses the hope that doctors sacrifices themselves to do the best for their patients and creates 2 characters that have some kind of trauma., and have them bond through the trauma.

The show has it's moments with the romance, but the majority of the show is a slump and it's very slow. Many of the highlights of the show are emotional as you're emotionally blackmailed to feel like you can understand what the MC is going through.

The drama is a really slow burn and nothing can really make it better unless you really like the genre, and sadly most of the korean drama watchers adore the melodrama.

I guess the rich can cry in a Ferrari and make you feel sad for them, instead of using that money to go to therapy.

Also don't forget that right now, doctors are on strike against Korea accepting more medical students, letting patients and emergency patients die or get worse as they strike.
This isn't a strike against low pay or long hours, but that they want the numbers of doctors graduating from university in Korea to not increase. This just shows how elitist the profession itself is despite the grueling first few years.

An amazing show that's marred by the side kicks

You thought that China forgot how to make action wuxia dramas ever since they discovered CGI but out of no where, this appears.

This is a old school Wuxia action drama that is so good, despite Di Ren Jie not looking as handsome as the other actors who have played him.

No finger pointing and hand seal that pretends to be a live action naruto drama here.

Di Ren Jie/Detective Dee is China's version of Sherlock Homes and people who love chinese dramas should be no stranger to him as there's already numerous dramas and movies about his adventures.

In 2024, This drama is a refreshing blast as we don't have over the top CGI and finger pointing fight scenes here. The drama is more reminiscence of old wuxia dramas and Jackie Chan/Donnie Yen movies.

The cases so far are well reasoned and interesting to watch as the people often cry of supernatural happening which is typical of the ancient people and there are enough action scenes to leave you on the edge of your seat. Sadly in the later half, the cases are not as good and the emotions of the characters take focus as they become personally involved.

One issue is perhaps the music could be better, as it is a little dull and obviously as mentioned above, very little romance if you really like the romance in your dramas.

While the first half of the drama is stunning, the latter half is sadly marred by the magistrate sidekicks. One was even gender-changed from male to female to bring some romantic-tension

After finishing the show, I can't help but feel that the show started amazingly. the first half of the show was superb. The sidekicks was tolerable but sadly, it all falls apart due to a disappointing second half. You can't help but feel sad when you read about the rumors regarding one of the sidekicks.

A Medical Web Novel Adaptation Ruined By Censorship

If you're watching medical dramas for the heart breaking stories of patients and the drama between doctors, you might like this drama but for everyone else who watches medical drama for the medical scenes (surgeries), this drama is a complete waste of time.

This is adapted from a web novel where the MC has a system. The system give him his godlike knowledge and skills which allows him to amaze everyone and cure everyone.

In the drama however, the system doesn't exist. Nothing replaces it. He just has the knowledge and skills after waking up suddenly one day. No need to have the training that everyone needs to go through to become a skilled surgeon, just sleep and wake up and you have the hands of god!

If you want to watch doctors doing surgeries, just go back to Korean, Japanese or American dramas. Majority of the scenes during the operation is centered around the expressions of the surgeons, or the viewers talking, or the medical machinery and the few shots you have of the operating area is completely blurred.

What's worse is that novel actually has explanations of many of the medical terminologies or descriptions of the surgical areas to help viewers understand what's going on.

In the drama however, all of this is absent. So unless you're going to pause and google every thing or is a doctor/medical student yourself, you probably won't enjoy this show much.

Similar to every other system novel that is adapted, it's trashed, but the drama and medical cases are still good to watch as they're taken straight from a very successful novel so if you like a drama like that without all the things that make a medical drama a medical drama, you'll like it.

A better drama compared to Sword & Fairy 6/Chinese Paladin 6 but has pacing issues

As mentioned by everyone, this drama sadly has pacing issues.

The first 10 episodes also sends a wrong message about the show being about the coming of age of the MC and starts off slowly, but quickly changes into the usual "Demons are coming and I'm going to save the world" xianxia.

There's also a huge info dump around the last 10 episodes.

Of course if you watch often, you'd already know that this is very typical of dramas from China.

The criticism aside, the show is still a much better experience to watch compared to Sword and Fairy 6, which is airing at the same time as this drama simply because of the action/fight scenes. This is a mix of traditional and modern action scenes, where the usual finger pointing is still present but there's also a lot of acrobatics, making it a very enjoyable watch.

While Sword and Fairy 6 is basically Naruto, where the pacing is much better but everyone is just doing hand signs.

That said, Both Sword and Fairy dramas still falls into the "Demons are coming and I'm going to save the world" trope regardless as it's an adaptation from the game and can't really stray too far off.

Made by 3 directors, and it shows that there's 3 directions in every aspect of the drama.

This is an adaption of a novel that already has a fanbase, hence you'll see many good things about this but objectively it's not a good drama.

It tells you they have a star studded cast, and 3 famous directors however it seems like none of the directors actually worked together and instead just shot their own parts on their own, and used glue to stick it together.

The result is a very confusing show and makes no sense unless you watch it repeatedly and force yourself to make sense of it. you might even want to bring a notebook along to take notes.

If you enjoy doing this while watching a show, you might like this but the majority of people, watching a drama is about kicking back and relax, letting it bring you into it's world.

This show does none of that, and the show airtime was speedrun too. 24 episodes released quickly and they moved on unlike burning flames, which took a break and released lesser episodes a week to get more viewers.

This being a small slice of the novel too, means that most people wont be able to enjoy the drama unless they've read it in it's other forms (novel,manga,anime..ect)

A mediocre movie that topped the CNY box office, just like it's predecessor

Not much different from the first movie, this is another CNY popcorn movie.

Doing very well in the box office, coming within the top 3 and is a sequel to the first movie which clears up the cliffhanger.

Sadly this movie isn't better than the first movie and is more or less the same, if not a very similar movie.

Still if you liked the first movie, you'll definitely love this and it's a very fun and family friendly movie to watch with your family.

An Okay Movie

Almost all the CNY movies are popcorn movies are it's a time for families to go out and spend time together. hence the box office for CNY movies are usually really good and it's a great time for comedies and sadly, mediocre movies.

This is one of the better movies among the mediocre movies and as usual with most CN media, brings a positive vibe throughout the entire movie. Not surprising, This movie topped the charts as it was a safe and good choice for families during CNY.

My only complaint is that the racing wasn't done well, and you were left with a cliffhanger at the end, altho the sequel cleared it all up. (The sequel just came out in 2024 CNY and just like this movie, topped the charts being in the top3).

Rare Old School Wuxia Drama

You thought that China forgot how to make action wuxia dramas ever since they discovered CGI but out of no where, this appears.

The only disappointing part of this show is perhaps how Hou Yan Jia is a tragedy and he's made popular by fighting for his rights during the events right before WW2/Japanese occupation occurred. Alot of events in the show are also fiction that pretends to be non-fiction and a biography.

Unlike the other dramas or movies about him, this drama portrays a longer period of his life, while not historically accurate for the purposes of entertainment, still reminds you about the tragedies of war and how the West and the Japanese who viewed themselves as superior to everyone else acted in weaker countries.

Comedy that has geographical lines

This is a comedy that nobody outside china can appreciate.

As such, the movie can become a completely waste of time to a laughing good time (depending on your sense of comedy again).

This is basically a low budget comedy that nobody outside china can appreciate due to the context of the jokes, as it's often a spoof or parody on events that has happened. And since comedy itself is subjective and everyone has a different funny bone, even people in china do not find this movie funny.

To be honest, just skip this movie unless you are dying for some wuxia, but even then there are much better movies to watch if you're okay with older movies.
