I think itâs fine to have series that portray characters realistically and fine to have those that donât. At the end of the day, different series are intended for different audiences. Pursuit of Jade is primarily a ROMANCE drama with a historical setting. Are we really going to pretend we donât know which audience it is for and what most of such an audience would prefer to see?
One of my favourite movies is Mulan starring Vicki Zhao and Chen Kun which I feel shows the characters to be quite rough. It definitely works well for that movie.
I am also excited to watch two of Liu Xueyiâs dramas; in one, he is playing a historical figure and it seems like the production will have him look more true to history. I imagine it will be quite a serious drama. In the other, I can already see that he will be wearing more makeup.
What about the fact that most actors are ridiculously attractive? Where are the complaints that it isnât ârealisticâ for every single person in a single scene to be above average? LOL
All that to say, again, different dramas have different genres have different aesthetics based on the demographic being targeted.
This is more applied in Korean context in China It only applies in certain cases, but heâs had many controversial…
Fair enough, I understand where youâre coming from :) I just think ANY association to Kris Wu would be incredibly unfair for most people though, haha!
With artists, at least for me, thereâs an extent to which I can âignoreâ their real life to enjoy their art but there are limits. The things ZLH has said (there are two things, a comment about SEA appearances and a comment towards a woman asking if she understood Interstellar) sees me in the âhopefully his worldview changes and he wisens up a littleâ category.
That being said, the person you responded to is wrong when they say ZLH would have been cancelled in Korea or the US. When it comes to misogyny and racism, Korean media doesnât tend to take it very seriously). And even worse, the US still platforms people who do things like Kris Wu has done đ€ź
can anyone tell me, why is this rated so low? i havenât started watching but iâm trying to work out whether i will. i canât imagine itâs the acting⊠is it the story?
my feeling so far is that the acting could be a lot better BUT i am aware that this is the first role for both…
iâm excited to see them keep approving. they look like very sweet actors behind the scenes so itâs unfortunate that some commenters (on their lives, etc.) are being a bit cruel.
also how Liang Bei Yiâs hair is cut and styled in this show does not do him justice! the way he usually wears his hair is very cute and suits him a lot better!
The actor playing Ouyang Han literally having the prettiest face card out of the whole cast and they tryna tell…
how is it unrealistic? you act as if there arenât beautiful people who are rejected, haha. also we understand why the person Ouyang Han likes, likes the other character instead (heâs not unattractive by any means but there are other merits that clearly drew him in)
e. not using the names has made it a little confusing but iâm trying to avoid more spoilers no matter how minor haha!
my feeling so far is that the acting could be a lot better BUT i am aware that this is the first role for both leads so i think thatâs fair. that aside, the whole vibe of this is exactly what i look for in a modern chinese drama about youth. i find Chinese media really has such a specific atmosphere when it comes to what youth looks and feels like, and this drama nails it. iâm really enjoying it :)
You're giving examples of incredibly good, often awarded movies directed and acted by widely respected and renowned…
âYou defend a director without a Wikipedia pageâ followed by âYou equate marketing metrics with artistic craftâ is pretty ironic.
âThe industry regulator itself just held a symposium calling out exactly these problems: 'appearance worship,' 'traffic-driven popularity,' and the need to prioritize acting skill over face cardsâ? - China also heavily regulates inclusion of reincarnation, time travel, supernatural events, distortion of history, etc. in media. That is to say, the industry regulator itself is known for its chokehold on what âartâ is permissible. THAT is losing something. What youâre talking about⊠If people wanted to watch MORE of what youâre talking about, there would be more. It hasnât been lost; itâs still there. If the industry regulator wants MORE of it, there are ways to encourage thatâbut it isnât by talking down on or blacklisting others genres, themes and tropes. It isnât by blacklisting actors or rejecting certain appearances. Again, THOSE are REAL examples of something being âlostâ (or more accurately âtakenâ).
These actors whether martial artists or not share one thing: craft over glamour, discipline over traffic rankings. - There is still media that prioritises âcraft over glamourâ. And there is a wealth of media that doesnât need to âprioritiseâ because it offers both in abundance. As for discipline over traffic rankings⊠Itâs too ideal. Youâre thinking in a vacuum. In this day and age, when everything moves so fast and everything is so expensive, who has the luxury to put aside thinking of traffic rankings? But again, that doesnât mean the craft isnât focused on (that being said, of course sometimes it isnât the focusâbut youâve brought up SURVIVING EXAMPLES from back when. There were plenty of bad actors, plenty of stupid series, etc. back then too!!!)
It's not about wearing makeup itself, but about a generals in the dramas paying attention to their look on a battlefield.its…
Okay but most girls donât wear makeup when they sleep. And most men donât wear makeup at all.
Most generals donât wear makeup? Iâm not sure how many generals in reality film under harsh light but Iâm going to guessânone.
At the end of the day, different genres are made to appeal to different audiences. Most people watching something like Pursuit of Jade arenât watching primarily for action scenes but for romance. There are absolutely shows out there that focus on the action of wars and fighting that use LIMITED (not NO but LIMITED) makeup. You can find those. It doesnât mean everything needs to be like that. After all, in so many series the least realistic thing is hardly that the characters are all wearing makeup LOL so for that to be where the line is drawn is really too funny
The most basic requirement is that "what is portrayed should be true to what it is [realistic]." - I disagree; there are numerous genres and there are numerous audiences; sometimes things should be realistic, sometimes the whole point is that things are NOT realistic. It would be like saying all paintings need to be painted in a hyperrealistic style. Why? What would the purpose be?
Film is art, at the end of the day, and to limit art in such a broad way is truly to miss the entire point of art.
His talent is far from mediocre. Being considered attractive does not automatically mean someone lacks ability.…
hmm⊠so you think normally itâs true but not this time? i disagree, personally; i think what youâre actually seeing is people commenting on his looks because they find him very handsome AND think he acts well. there are many actors who are very handsome and donât act wellâwhen that is the case, people absolutely make sure to mention that the acting isnât good (either just commenting on the bad acting or saying the actor is really attractive but acts poorly).
i do however agree that an actor can have a following without much acting ability. same thing for singers who canât sing well. but i first saw ZLH in Story of Kunning Palace and i think suggesting he doesnât act well is a big stretch lol. could he improve? of course. just as most people can improve in their job.

Also the mirror locker scene⊠I feel like Sun Cai Zhen acted that out very well!
