I have the impression that we did not watch the same drama. Female Lead is tramatized because of her disgusting ex-boyfriend. She did not date anybody because he treated her so bad. Male Lead and Female Lead are both stuck, waiting to be loved/ to love.
She is not enjoying her single life with lots of toyboys.

Female Lead is not experiencing life. She was traumatized by her jerk ex-boyfriend. So she is stuck there and could not move on. She did not date anyone after him.
Male Lead is also stuck there, in love with her. This is why fate is bringing them together by all means.

In my opinion SML is the ex-boyfriend. Best friend and teacher are supporting cast members.
