You are right. People should not judge a drama solely based on its ratings. For producers, popularity is what matters most because it's directly linked to revenue, not ratings. Anyway, all ratings are biased and include haters and subject to manipulation. The Douban user count is interesting I think it gives indication of how popular a drama is and so far, MM has accumulated 165K which is quite high which is in line.
I think the rating for SAF6 is more reflection of type of storytelling that is not a typical idol romance because the story, acting, casting, and production quality is very good.

The label "idol drama", I think unfairly carries a negative connotation about the acting skills, so actors distance themselves from this label. Xu Kai took the opportunity to grow his skills by taking on versatile roles when it's possible. For the past 7 yrs Xu Kai patiently and skillfully manage his relationship with a smart and cunning boss who only care about his own profits. Yet Xu Kai has been able to capitalize on each role.
