He's still the same person. He's not one-dimensional character. He has both a stern side and soft side to him, depending on the people and circumstances. The character development has to do with his change in his attitude and outlook on life. He told He Dong that costs and benefits only for business not his relationships with people he care about. For sure, he smiles more and is happier overall because he has found a family.

I could see dementia as another family issue in this drama, but the mother is not that old.
