I beginning to think that the overall rating is made up by MDL staff, but fans should still be diligent to rate this drama, rate every episode (in advance to avoid forgetting to do it later, you can always edit it) and be sure to verify your phone no. in the settings.
Otherwise, how will fans know how real people feel about the drama?

since we stopped asking people to verify, the ratings seem to have receded slightly. I noticed the old age group 65+ dropped significantly from 8.5 to 7.9 (attention span?); otherwise, overall, mainly above 8.0 with the largest and younger age groups that I'm guessing makes up 75%of the total still maintaining 8.5 to 8.7.

yes, I was reading on Douban people were cursing the director because they had bought the script and they noticed he had deleted so many emotional scenes and supposedly a "classic" line in the drama that Qi is supposed to say. They said this director is too measured and held back too much, even the scenes he included, he removed some important lines in their opinion. If you look him up in MDL, this is really his first drama he has ever directed. He's only done 2 other dramas in his entire career a few years ago, and he was not the main director. Now I get why he was beyond happy and shaking Xu Kai's hands, not letting it go after they finished shooting. He must have been very happy with the cast which he was fortunate to have. I wonder if the director participates in the casting. If he did, we should give him credit for that. When you exclude things from the script - not sure if he can change the script? it could change the meaning or confuse the audience for such a complicated and delicate story with profound themes.
To be fair, I did also read some comments that people were praising him too in other scenes.

But I respect his work because I'm not a director and I don't know the challenges he faces. This is his work, his interpretation and style. Afterall, comments can come from haters too and no movie can please everyone. Overall, the drama was well done but maybe it could have been even greater, but this is the version we will know, and I still enjoy this drama very much. I wouldn't have known if I didn't come across the comments, but it does validate something that was vaguely tugging at me too. The director did a very good job given this is really his first drama.

if you feel Esther should (always) have good chemistry with any male lead, and then you say the chemistry in this drama is lacking, is that the same as saying the problem is Xu Kai.

They're supposed to act like kids when they are together, playful, teasing, and competitive with each other. Qi said that when they lived together, Jinzhao always took her bed. There are no intimate feelings until later on but Jinzhao is too shy. In one scene, he wants to kiss her but hesitates. When he does accidentally press his lips to hers, he is embarrassed and acts like a girl on her first date. The drama is not about the guy pursuing the girl or vice versa.

in the game, that's what Jinzhao does, he squeezes her cheeks and pats her on the head and teases her even more mercilessly than the drama. It's meant to be cute and endearing interactions. Funnier scenes typically the acting is more forced. Emotional scenes should never be forced but subtle expressions with eyes, face, and entire body. Did Esther and Dylan have funny scenes that acting is natural?

I think it's great that you share your opinion but when you make comparisons, expect fans to chime in with their opinions too. The chemistry you are looking for is subjective to your preferences, your personal experiences.

Hi, I'm actually not following what you're saying "the type of relationship I love". When I see how Jinzhao takes her hands and she takes his hands as they go together to fight, that action alone, the way it was done, depicted to me the strong bond of trust and how they follow each other. I can't explain it as we all see different things. He extended his hands with air of responsibility that he alone protects her, and she gets next to him, holds his hands immediately without a thought. It was as natural an action as you can get. I can read their body language. That is part of the art of chemistry. They way they interact shows their strong bond. Knowing their past 3 years, I feel the two actors helped me to relate to them well.

I see the same chemistry that the game depicted which is adorable and sweet. Dylan doesn't have enough of an innocent appearance to play this character. If he wore a mask, how would his eyes appear because I see his eyes are devilish looking which is why he played in the Fairy and the Devil. In my opinion, his face is more suited to play mean and cold characters than innocent naive ones. This drama is not a true love story. There are romantic feelings that are explored but nothing beyond that. One is shy and modest about his feelings; the other is totally clueless.
Also, this director has never directed a drama on his own before and I think he didn't bring out the big emotional scenes in the script. In fact, I read he deleted most of them and even classic lines. It's not always the fault of the actors. I enjoyed how the characters interacted and related to each other in this drama, especially the two main characters. It was very touching and made me feel good emotions.

If you go back and rewatch parts of past episodes conversations, there has been a lot of clues about the story and what is come. It's just that the first time you watch it, you don't realize what they are saying (having to read translations is more difficult to catch on). If you go back and rewatch and take note, you can piece the story together, although you may still not understand why until the story winds down. Perhaps that is another reason for so many conversations throughout the drama to tell this complicated story to audience. I supposed they have to balance how much they should reveal to keep audience in suspense. If you know everything up front, it won't be interesting in the end. Chinese Paladin are emotional stories. I just hope the director can bring out the emotions.

these roles are really for the young actors, so much physical activity. I wonder if he actually got thrown into the river in the scene (ep 9). The animation was cool.
