Sol asked him to open the time capsule on January 1st, 2023, and in her letter, she literally wrote, "Thank you for being alive." Then he remembered the pool scene where he asked her whether he was going to die (of course, he asked that out of frustration), but her helpless demeanor didn't make sense to him at that time.
