These two have so much in common!

One thing that stood out to me was how we see the retro story of the past heroes come into the story. So, while this story is about our young heroes, it really ends up getting told through reliving and uncovering the past stories of the previous generation. This is totally how Word of Honor tells its story too.

Also, I felt that the storyboarding feels very similar.

Also, the main leads are, one from the demon sect and one from the righteous sect. The story also has a similar unfolding of uncovering the righteous sects' secrets and in turn seeing the demon sect in a different light. There is a same theme produced through the making the characters and viewers look at what is good and what is evil - it isn't about what sect you are in but the individuals intentions and actions. Can our MLs face dispelling prejudice from both sides and find a harmonious solution?

Both dramas also deal with zombie armies!

Xu Xianzhe's inspiration for Dao Ma when he started drawing the manhua that started publication in 2015 is Tony Leung Ka-fai, in this film also featuring our protagonist needing to escort certain individuals to a certain place, by a certain date.

Yanzi-niang by Li Yunxiao is a vividly unforgettable wily flirtatious female as unique as Maggie Cheung portraying saucy calculating multi-faceted Jin Xiang Yu in this 1992 movie.

Chen Lijun as Ayuya turns in a strong performance that sees Ayuya as the most popular Lunar New Year character from the 2026 Lunar New Year movies of the box office, as per weibo announcement. Her performance is starkly different from the amazing Lin Ching-hsia due to character differences, but there are touching and feisty parallels seen in certain moments.

This is likely the movie which inspired Xue Xianzhe for his manhua. A mature screenplay, top-notch cast for villains and heroes, and solidly encompassing themes of wuxia. A Tsui Hark classic.

Both deal with infidelity, friend groups, moral quandaries, and have substantial character growth for its main leads. The tough conversations and philosophical/psychological dialogue are a feature, not a flaw. Also the visual showcase is quite something to behold.
