Haruka is a “plain jane” who left the countryside to start her college life at Tokyo. She’s secretly in love with Kurotaki, a coworker at her part-time job, but she lacks the self-confidence to confess her feelings to him. Then she meets Hikaru, a glamorous but sharp-tongued fashionista who begrudingly agrees to play “fairy godmother” for Haruka. However, there’s more to Hikaru than meets the eye!

Fang Jia Hua is the successor of a business. His dream is to open a chocolate store and be an expert in chocolate. He ends up leaving his business and his family to fulfill his dream. Hong Xi En is someone who spent her days slogging and taking up part time work. One day, she ends up working for him and above all, she has to dress herself as a man for the job.

Wakana Gojo is a high school guy who’s totally into hina dolls and is training to become a master doll maker. Even though he loves making these dolls, his unique hobby makes it hard for him to fit in with his classmates. One day, his popular classmate, Kitagawa Marin, notices his talent and asks him to make a cosplay costume using his doll-making skills.

At first, Wakana’s unsure about it, but Marin’s excitement convinces him to give it a try. Marin might look like a flashy gal, but she’s actually a big otaku who loves cosplaying her favorite characters. Watching Marin enjoy herself so much, Wakana starts to come out of his shell bit by bit. As they work on the costumes together, they start getting closer and closer…!?

Yuki Rio, the daughter of an old, prestigious family in Kyoto with over 1,000 years of history, enters into an arranged marriage at the age of 16 with a man she’s never met. Her husband is Takamine Masatomo, a handsome CEO in the IT industry. Every year on her birthday, she would receive 50 million yen, making their relationship one based solely on money. One day, after ten years had passed with no contact, Rio decided to move to Tokyo. She asks her husband, whom she’s meeting for the first time, for a divorce. On the other hand, Takamine finds himself unexpectedly attracted to Rio and doesn’t want a divorce. Thus begins a romantic battle between a wife who wants a divorce and a husband who refuses to let her go.

Both have random funny scenes. They are not so as normal comedies.

Same idea of hiding your "true" self in order to fit in at school; though in Otomen it is a boy who hides his "girly" likes, and in Switch Girl it is a girl who hids her "old man" behaviors.

Both deal with two very different people finding a balance with one another. From Five to Nine has more romance though and is centered around young adults rather than teens.

Kusakabe Anna is a talented consultant working at a major management consulting firm. One day, she suddenly resigns, declaring that she plans to achieve FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early). However, despite presenting herself as financially independent, her reality is far less stable, and she gets by through temporary part-time jobs taken on a whim. In truth, there is another reason behind her resignation.

While working a short-term job organizing receipts for a small design company, Anna meets Seo Mizuki, an eccentric and ill-tempered character designer. Although she initially wants to avoid getting involved with him, she becomes concerned after witnessing him accept poorly paid work from a questionable client. Attempting to help only leads to further trouble, and before long, Anna finds herself assisting Mizuki with his character creation work.

In Otomen, Asuka acts like a popular, manly man. However, he secretly likes girly hobbies such as sewing. In Hotaru No Hikari, it's the opposite, Hotaru acts like a typical OL, but at home she's a slob. Ironically, both love interest in these series are the exact opposite of the male/female leads.

This story follows the sweet and “overprotective” newly-wed life between Someya Yukito, a young master of an established inn in Asakusa, and Tsuruoka Io, a pure-hearted female apprentice training to be a chef. Tsuruoka was in the depths of despair until she found solace in the sweet konpeito candy given to her by Someya. Since then, she has earnestly cherished her feelings while training as a chef. Yukito’s affectionate words and actions reserved only Tsuruoka, along with his excessively cute jealousy, create an irresistibly heart-fluttering devotion with a charming gap that’s impossible to resist!

The story lines are different, but the styles are the same. Both the male leads are high school guys who act "cute" and challenge traditional notions of masculinity. Both dramas also focus on the relationship between kids and parents.
