Curious and different
There is originality to this series that is mesmerizing. The storyline is gripping, emotional, exciting and mysterious - all at once. The male actors have also done an outstanding job and their emotions are worn on their sleeves masterfully. That said, it is not perfect. The female lead with her childish and immature behaviour is frequently annoying. However, what is most difficult to digest is why there was a need to bride-match a high schooler who behaves like a 12-year-old with a man who is in his mid-30s and has lived for over 900 years. It is this dichotomy that somehow really becomes and stays a thorn in the viewing side. Comments could be made regarding the skillfulness of the main actress, but perhaps this is fully a matter of personal opinion. And then there is the matter of the ending - what a letdown. To get our hopes up only to be so brutally disappointed in a manner that made little to no sense - it was a true storyline letdown. It started off rlly well, it was funny, romantic, broo the bromance 🤌🤌🤌, the main leads were literally the story was going really well, it had me almost in tears and had me laughing it was going really good.
The relationship between the main leads was developing really well, loved the cool guardian and grim reaper vibes.
Loved how they both cared for eun tak.
It was a nail biting, romance, it makes u so excited to watch the next episode.
Ngl everything was going well the relationship between yoo in na and going yoo was going well siblings rivalry and all.
But lol there's always a but from the moment lee dong wook was recovering his memories it started to go down hill

After all this, the two reincarnations of couples were stuffed in 8 frickin minutes like how what tf do u mean, and bruh if kim shin is immortal, ji eun tak is a human she's Bound to die someday, how many life's will she take on to be w someone immortal.

Second lead relationship definitely more ship-worthy than the first lead relationship in this drama.
To me the story dragged, the chemistry was quietly simmering throughout in a beautifully shot drama. Rather than situational conflicts, the drama was more about character interactions so relied more heavily on proper acting. Fortunately, the leads were well-cast and met those expectations.
Had to force myself to finish this one. To me slightly overrated but still a good show and worth watching if you have time on your hands.

Not Great, But Still Very Good
I did enjoy this drama. The cast was flawless! Its not often that a drama's lead and second lead couples are equally strong and with the added bonus of a bromance that was every bit as compelling as the romances. The story is beautiful and well told, yet something about it just misses the mark for me.I guess I didn't quite understand why the Goblin was being punished so severely. And is it me, but was there A LOT of crying? I felt like I cried A LOT. I don't mind "the feels", but by episode 9 it started to feel almost gratuitous. Goblin had many funny scenes as well. The casting was superb! But was there one episode where at least one character did not cry?
I must mention that the OST is AMAZING and definitely contributed to "the feels". I looked forward to hearing Never Far Away each and every episode. 16 episodes was perfect and Gobllin is definitely worth a watch, but this is not a drama I would rewatch, not even for certain scenes. Solid drama, but it's one and done for me.

Overrated , Underhated .
It feels a little pointless to write a review so many years after this drama’s release, and I doubt many people will stumble across it now, but here it is anyway.To be blunt: the pacing is /atrocious/. I actually went and read a bunch of other reviews because I didn’t want to be so negative based solely on the first episode… but wow. I should /not/ be reaching for the fast-forward button during the initial episode of a series that’s supposed to hook me, yet the fast-forward button became my loyal companion. The first 50 minutes were spent spoon-feeding information that easily could’ve been delivered in under 20. And don’t even get me started on the curse explanation why did that need to drag on for 35 minutes?
On top of that, what exactly happened with the kid at the beginning? Why did the all-powerful god-of-war goblin just let him be thrown overboard? We’re shown that he suddenly has full control of his powers right after gaining them, but apparently not enough to save the child of the man who was basically a grandfather figure to him? It made absolutely no sense.
And then… the age gap. Oh my god, the age gap.
The moment the narrator said, “The Goblin’s bride has been born,” I already felt uneasy. He’s a 900-year-old man “saving” an unborn child who’s supposedly destined to be his wife? I tried to brush it off there are weirder fantasy tropes out there but then they meet again, and she’s in /high school/. I thought they’d wait until she was an adult, but nope! His fated wife is a teenager. Even if she’s 18 or 19, he was pushing 50 before he died, has been wandering the earth for nine centuries, and we’re supposed to swallow a romance between him and a high-schooler? Absolutely not.
And honestly, reading other reviews, people have pointed out something I wholeheartedly agree with: the director missed a huge opportunity for something more meaningful. Instead of defaulting to tired romance tropes, this could’ve been a heartwarming story about a lonely girl who lost her mother and never knew her father finally gaining a stable parental figure who cares for her in a genuine, non-romantic way. But nope. It just had to be romance.
Then there’s the length. Why are these episodes over an hour long? The first episode was a complete snooze fest . I barely clawed my way to the one-hour mark. My eyes physically hurt from trying to keep up with rapid subtitles, overly complicated lore, and the sudden introduction of not one but two dense, lore-heavy characters Reaper and Goblin at the exact same time.
And while we’re talking about plot choices, let me just say: they really wasted a brilliant setup. When I started watching, I genuinely thought the Goblin would be the antagonist and the Reaper the protagonist. The narration about Goblin’s curse sounded furious about the blood he’d spilled, so I assumed Reaper’s job was to stop him from killing needlessly. I imagined the Goblin on a revenge mission, hunting down the people responsible for the deaths of his family, comrades, and wife, while the Reaper tried to prevent further tragedy. I thought maybe the Goblin’s “bride” had been prevented from being born for centuries, adding a tragic twist. Eventually Goblin needing to come to understand that killing reincarnations of his wrongdoers was a wrongdoing in itself. And maybe the King or the advisor who corrupted the king would've also became immortal and he could've been the real antagonist Goblin was chasing after.
Honestly? That story would’ve been so much more interesting. Scrap the forced romance, remove the high-school-aged love interest entirely, and instead focus on the dynamic between Goblin and Reaper two lonely, morally gray characters navigating fate, guilt, revenge, and redemption. Goblin seeking justice; Reaper bound to stop him. They could’ve formed an unlikely companionship, slowly learning to understand each other. Maybe the final twist reveals that the mythical bride always dies before birth, making his quest both tragic and impossible.
But instead… we got another romance filled with clichés and uncomfortable implications.
Maybe someday someone will create the version of this story that actually lives up to the premise. Until then, this one just wasn’t for me and I'd only recommend it to someone that I hate simply to waste their time.

Best effect ever still in K-Drama
Good story line, effect, and pointed characters.How they build each character as well as the story line followed up were good.
This romance-comedy-fiction drama you can not forget even time passed.
They start with reasoning why this story line happened. Every path you walk by has a reason because of no one but your choice.
If you like fate-kind-of story, this is relly good.
I replay this every time missing sungjae since his acting/character present best here. rather than other drama his ever play.

Good but not amazing…
Mostly great things to say, I did find some episodes to be a bit slow and took me a few pauses to get through each episode, I wish they were a little bit shorter in length. For me around episode 10, is when it started to get really good. I couldn’t get past the age different between the leads and it kinda creeped me out. I almost liked the sub plot with Sunny and the Grim Reaper more tbh. The ending felt a little bit rushed but inevitable, and I’m glad Sunny and Grim Reaper finally got to be together finally. I also loved the friendship between the Goblin and Grim Reaper, it made the show so much more enjoyable. So after seeing those two videos on Youtube I went to watch the first episode.
The story of how Goblin came to be was intriguing and seeing how the Reaper worked had me as well so I became giddy thinking this was going to be an excellent watch.
Man how wrong was I??? The main FL became annoying pretty quick. I was hoping against hope that this wasn't going to be a dimwitted female who will fall in love quickly without having any relationship buildup and there it was....the dimwitted female who quickly falls in love with a guy without having a relationship buildup. It's why I became to hate Korean romance dramas in the first place.
The oozing sappy cliche romances always grate my nerves and I truly steer clear of them. I have, however, watched some Kdramas that had romance in it that was barely tolerable but this one...I felt it was just going to be the same throughout the whole series.
I tried going back to finish the first episode but I just kept pausing and haven't been back since. I can't say anything else about this drama because I barely finished the first episode. From reading other reviews that had the same feelings as me, I don't think I'm missing anything.

Regia: 9; Sceneggiatura: 8,7; Personaggi: 10.K-drama del 2016 che ha riscosso un enorme successo determinando in parte il fenomeno hallyu (Korean wave), ossia una diffusione della cultura coreana di massa, precedentemente limitata al contesto nazionale. Creato da Kim Eun-sook (The Glory, The King-Eternal Monarch, Mr Sunshine, Descendants of the Sun) e diretto da Lee Eung-bok (Sweet Home, 1, 2, 3, Jirisan, Mr Sunshine) la serie è un misto di fantasy, romanticismo e drama, con un nucleo comedy che la rendono unica nel suo genere. Il tratto avvincente è l'utilizzo di elementi folkloristici della tradizione coreana per la stesura dei personaggi e veicolare messaggi allo spettatore.
Trama
La storia ruota attorno a Kim Shin (interpretato da Gong Yoo), un generale della dinastia ella dinastia Goryeo che viene tradito e ucciso ingiustamente da un Re manipolato dal proprio infido consigliere. Dopo la sua morte, diventa un Goblin immortale, condannato a vivere per secoli come punizione per le vite stroncate in battaglia. L'unico modo per liberarsi dalla sua condanna è trovare la sua "sposa" che potrà salvarlo dalla sua maledizione ma anche determinarne il riposo eterno. La sua vita cambia quando incontra la diciannovenne Ji Eun-tak (interpretata da Kim Go-eun), una ragazza in grado di vedere i fantasmi e che ha un destino speciale legato a lui dal momento che era stata salvata al momento della nascita proprio dal Goblin.
Parallelamente, la storia comprende anche un Triste Mietitore (interpretato da Lee Dong-wook), il "grim reaper" , che ha il compito di accompagnare le anime nell'aldilà e che ha un legame misterioso con Kim Shin. La serie esplora le relazioni tra i personaggi principali, intrecciate da un passato che verrà disvelato nel corso degli episodi, le loro lotte interiori e i temi dell'amore, della morte e del destino.
Temi trattati
Amore e Sacrificio: Uno dei temi centrali di "Goblin" è l'amore eterno e il sacrificio. La relazione tra Kim Shin e Ji Eun-tak è caratterizzata da momenti di dolcezza e intensità emotiva, evidenziando come l'amore possa superare le barriere del tempo e della morte. Molti dialoghi rappresentano inoltre la condizione dell'amore nella vita umana e innescano forti riflessioni nello spettatore risultando attuali e realistiche. Il dialogo tra i due protagonisti mostra un po' la condizione di colui che in amore vuole essere visto (solo lei può vedere la sua spada, quindi il suo peccato, al sua solitudine, il suo dolore ) ma al contempo ha paura di essere odiato, una volta che l'amato viene visto per quello che è (essere finito, perfettibile).
Identità e Destino: La serie pone domande sulla ricerca dell'identità (la sposa esiste perché ha una missione, se non vi assolve non ha spazio e motivo di sussistere, gli altri personaggi reincarnati devono trovare una nuova identità lasciando indietro chi sono stati) e sul concetto di destino. I personaggi lottano per comprendere il loro ruolo nel mondo e il significato delle loro vite passate ma anche per trovare quelle variabili che possono sovvertirlo, non accentando i piani dall'alto.
Vita e Morte: La dualità tra vita e morte è ricorrente, con il Goblin e il Grim reaper rappresentano due facce della stessa medaglia. La serie esplora la bellezza e la tragicità della vita, nonché il ciclo inevitabile della morte.
Goblin è un’opera complessa e molto bene orchestrata, che mescola romanticismo, comicità e dolore in modo profondo. Tuttavia, va oltre: ti invita incessantemente a meditare, a immergerti nella bellezza e a esplorare più a fondo la natura umana, interrogandoti sul senso della vita, della morte dell’amore, anche attraverso l'Onnipotente che si manifesta in alcuni momenti nei personaggi più insospettabili e fornisce delle risposte illuminanti: "Dio pone delle domande, le vostre scelte rappresentano le risposte (destino)".
Non è un'opera priva di difetti, ma per molti aspetti si distingue come un vero e proprio cult. É romantico, divertente, straziante, già solo per il fatto che l'unico scopo della vita della protagonista è quella di estrarre la spada del Goblin determinando la sua scomparsa. La storia tra Sunny e il Cupo mietitore che si fonda su tradimento e vendetta in una vita passata, su ricordi dimenticati ma con un dolore eternamente ricordato che ne determinano il modo di porsi di lui, sempre triste e nostalgico. Tra le ferite che apre, la loro storia salvifica e redentiva lascia nuove cicatrici sanguinanti, Eun-Tak insiste spesso sull' "amore triste", che è quello che viene celebrato nel lavoro: un amore che si sforza di persistere, resistere, trovare nuove variabili ai piani di Dio per poter esistere. Anche di fronte alla tragedia e nonostante l'amore triste, Goblin rimane tuttavia una commedia nel suo nucleo. Offre degli sketch divertenti ed esilaranti delle dinamiche tra i coinquilini casuali e riluttanti, in perfetto stile "Scemo + Scemo". Divinità che scherzano e si maltrattano a vicenda come due bambini capricciosi.
Possono fare piovere o teletrasportarsi ma si ritrovano del tutto incapaci di fronte alla tecnologia. Particolari e degni di nota per la creatività con cui sono stati presentati i personaggi di questo lavoro: divinità, mietitori, goblin, fantasmi che convivono nel mondo degli umani , insospettabili. L'organizzazione quasi "aziendale" dei Mietitori, vestiti come dei capomafia russi, che si incontrano e si riuniscono per i loro incarichi mortali, con cene di fine anno e di benvenuto per i neoassunti, con solide gerarchie, consegnano documenti, gestiscono account di posta aziendali e, soprattutto, seguono procedure di liquidazione delle spese a carico dell'azienda; un mondo dove i Goblin potevano creare oro dal nulla e dove persone speciali (come Eun Tak) potevano aiutare i morti a chiudere i loro conti in sospeso (il legame con il Sesto Senso, 1999, è molto evidente). Il Goblin e le sue scene di combattimento telecinetico con il Mietitore erano adorabili e anche le canzoni canzonatorie sulle mutande del Goblin, intonate sempre da Mietitore per vendicarsi della cuffia da notte con cui si risvegliava ogni mattina. Il loro rapporto goffo e limitato con la tecnologia li rende teneramente adorabili ma al tempo spesso spassosissimi nell'impaccio del non riuscire a vedersi durante una videocall.
Interpretazioni: L'attrice che interpreta Eun-Tak è stata caratterizzata in modo troppo infantile per avere 19 anni, comprendo che questo serva per mostrare la sua crescita. Le doti interpretative sono state davvero eccellenti: a mani basse è colei che ha offerto una recitazione più solida, credibile, fluida, talmente naturale e coerente da non avvertire un brusco stacco nel percorso evolutivo che verrà mostrato nel corso degli episodi (aspetto che spesso accade quando l'attore non ha esperienza o non viene ben diretto). Mi è molto piaciuto il personaggio di Sunny , la costruzione di una donna apparentemente leggera ma in verità molto profonda, che non ama piangersi addosso e che con fare indolente e sornione parla per doppi sensi e molto coraggiosamente prova a essere felice, almeno in questa vita, assumendosi dei rischi , in grado di accettare il proprio destino poi con grazia e compostezza. Una vera Regina! Tra le interpretazioni, tuttavia, la sua è quella che mi ha convinta di meno, in mezzo a due presenze maschili fortissime, con un potente impatto scenico e una bravissima Go-Eun che risulta più centrata a confronto.
Aspetti tecnici: l'uso del colore è stato sapientemente gestito e curato, il mietitore è sempre vestito di nero e utilizza vestiari in casa che all'inizio ricordano le vecchie camice di forza proprio a indicare la costrizione della punizione che sta scontando, l'incontro tra Kim Shin e Jin Taek , lei con una felpa verde, perché rappresenta speranza di salvezza per lui. La divinità della nascita è rappresentata sempre in rosso, per simboleggiare potere e status ma anche il sole e cielo (nella bandiera coreana, il rosso nel simbolo Taegeuk, un cerchio diviso a metà, rappresenta il sole e il cielo, mentre il blu rappresenta la terra e la luna), è un colore di buono augurio che trasmette energia, forza e vitalità, in alcune tradizioni coreane utilizzato anche in cerimonie funeree per simboleggiare la transizione e la rinascita dell'anima.
La presenza dei campi di cotone, morbido e ovattato, bianco richiamano purezza, crescita e la fertilità, ma anche rischi e difficoltà per la loro sensibilità agli agenti atmosferici e alle malattie, quindi rappresenta il rapporto tra tenacia e leggerezza, tra divisione e unione. Il grano saraceno invece rappresenta gli amanti.
Oltre alla scenografia curata e ad una fotografia di ottimo livello, anche il modo in cui sono state girate le scene è altrettanto curato. Tutte le scene di vita vissuta sono state girate sfruttando angolazioni diverse, dagli angoli e dall'alto, massimizzando la luce, rallentandole, allungando momenti o bloccando gli sfondi per fermare il tempo. L'uso dei primi, pianissimi piani sul viso per rendere le emozioni, o su dettagli del volto come lo sguardo triste e nostalgico di Gong Yoo ("un uomo che sembra triste anche quando sorride"),la regia cattura tutto con maestria e intensità, realizzando una narrazione immersiva, esteticamente coinvolgente e potentemente espressiva, anche integrando in modo sempre pertinente le musiche, sfumate, oniriche ed evocative che accompagnavano la narrazione.
Critiche: Come scrivevo in alto non è un lavoro perfetto, personalmente c'è una qualche ripetitività degli elementi narrativi (l'estrazione della spada e il commiato della seconda coppia, ripetuto ben 4 volte), l'eccessiva riproposizione di scene passate attraverso il ricordo; la compresenza di elementi humouristici e drammatici che rappresenta un elemento di novità per il lavoro, che lo rende unico nel suo genere, non è sempre "riuscita", manca un "legante" che vada a miscelare due elementi che stridono e che tolgono credibilità e intensità all'elemento drammatico, col rischio di farlo diventare "burlesque" e grottesco.
Le storie d'amore e inoltre non sono state molto approfondite, inizialmente i due sembrano in un rapporto non proprio amoroso, molto meglio dal 12° ep., stessa cosa per il Mietitore e la sua amata che verranno mostrati come coppia, sbrigativamente, solo nel finale.
Il finale non è stato dei migliori, personalmente, sebbene finisca in modo tutto sommato positivo e diciamo felice, con seconde possibilità per tutti, mi ha lasciato un sottofondo di amarezza e non del tutto appagata. Ho persino preferito quello di Moon Lovers. Inoltre queste seconde possibilità avvengono in un tempo molto lontano, mentre tutto è rimasto uguale a parte il CEO della società che è invecchiato, io avrei inserito un contesto più "futuristico", erano trascorsi almeno 30 anni.... (non meno, forse più).
C'è, secondo una mia personalissima e banalissima opinione, da profana, un buco sul finale, non spoilero nulla ma volete leggerlo lo scriverò nei commenti in basso, oscurandolo, se invece avete visto il lavoro scrivete nei commenti che magari ci confrontiamo o mi illuminate sull'argomento.
IN CONCLUSIONE: "Goblin" è un K-drama che riesce a mescolare abilmente diversi generi, offrendo una narrazione avvincente e personaggi memorabili. La sua esplorazione di temi universali come l'amore, il sacrificio e il significato della vita lo rende un'opera da non perdere, che ha avuto un enorme impatto sui drama moderni che sono venuti a seguire (pensiamo a My demon, 2024, solo per citarne uno...) . La bellezza visiva, unita ad una trama profonda e ad interpretazioni intense, rendono Goblin un viaggio unico, perfetto per chi cerca una storia fantasy ma anche un racconto d'amore eterno, "una storia d'amore che si inserisce in uno schema divino". Grazie alla sua abilità di combinare humour e drammaticità, nostalgia e humour, Goblin si distingue come un'opera unica nel suo genere.
