Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (2018)

With palace dramas like this and Zhen Huan - fights between concubine are expected to happen. Initially the drama went off well with good amount of conflict and revenge between the concubines. In summary - this is a heavier drama compared to Story of Yanxi and Zhen Huan.

Firstly - the negatives
1) The drama was intended to be about the romance between the leads, but there was still an emphasis on the inner court drama. The 'fights' progressively became repetitive and realistically you would expect the main to 'do something' in return for the tactics against her. But every time it kind of became a pity party and the 'innocence' became stubborn and unrealistic.
2) Although I really applaud the performance of Zhou Xun, unfortunately Wallace Huo was not on par with her level. It could be that he doesn't suit the character of Hongli/Qianlong because historically he is an emperor with great achievements and Huo did not portray this well. His chemistry with Zhou Xun was compatible during their 'younger years' in the drama but seem to be overpowered as the story progresses. I also watched Story of Yanxi prior to this so there was definite some comparisons (in my mind) between the actors.

Now - the positives
Again, the spectacular performance of Zhou Xun - she is really the representative of chinese actresses. I feel that for her poorly written characters she is the reason i gave this drama a 8/10. Furthermore, costumes and music was visually and auditory pleasing.

My favourite scene (SPOILER) - the last episode when Hailan brought in the series of fabric flags (?) that Ruyi handmade, with the names of all the people Wei YanWan had harmed, in the emperor's room. It was a very powerful scene and as a viewer you can feel the amount of anger and regret Ruyi has accumulated from WYW's act without her appearance.

Love that started with flames but ended as dust

I've heard people say that this was being compared to yanxi palace a lot because it was airing around the same timing. DON'T COMPARE shows because each show is different from each other. When i first saw the story for the show i thought that it was gonna be the normal thing: concubines fighting each other for love , killing each other, manipulating each other. But NO, i was wrong. This show left a quite deep impression on me. No matter how much Ruyi tried to stay away from the palace schemes, it just kept coming to her. After she became empress , things just became worst. Hongli had started to lose his trust in her because of of all the schemes. Ruyi had gotten so mad at Hongli that she cut her hair to signify that their relationship had ended. I was happy tgat she did it. She was fed up of being his empress. But don't worry, the evildoer consort ling got her karma in the end. The ending of this show was appropriate and i enjoyed it.


Whenever i try to rewatch this show, i just can't watch the first few episodes over again. It really pains. I usually start watching from the part where she bacame empress.

I must say that the costumes and set were flawless especially the ceremony for when she become empress, it made me wish to be there and witness it.

Anyways, Give this show a try, you wont regret it.

A lesbian romance steeped in tragedy

A tale where two women's love for each other never wanes, even during the darkest moments. Oh, and Wallace Huo is there. He plays the role of a glorified sperm donor.

Ok but seriously, hear me out. The romance arc of this drama becomes a lot more interesting when you read Yu Hailan as gay and Ruyi as bi (and, frankly, who cares about the Emperor). The more life in the Palace beats down Ruyi, the more Yu builds her strength so she can come out batting for Ruyi. Ruyi may not cherish Yu as much as Yu cherishes Ruyi, but Ruyi confides in her more than anyone else. They live together for a while. I mean, c'mon, they raise two kids together. But, sure, tell me they're just "good friends".

I do love a good tragedy and I think this series really threw punches in the last dozen or so episodes. However, I found it really hard to support Ruyi wholeheartedly as the protagonist. That's mostly because she embodies the terrible class politics of the drama.

This drama follows the usual historical Cdrama trope of: servants who are loyal and obedient are good, servants who dare have ambition and question authority are bad. I beg to differ from one of the other reviews and I argue that Ruyi is not an underdog. She may not directly murder anyone but a lot of people die or are grievously harmed due to her failure to protect them. Her refusal to engage in palace intrigue costs lives because, up until almost the end, she believes her judicial innocence to be protection enough. A lot of people sacrifice themselves for Ruyi but, ultimately, she does little self-sacrificing in return (though she's happy to offer a lot of unhelpful pity). At the same time, Wei Yanwan is depicted to be of poor character before she even starts harming people, because she dares to be a servant who wants to break free of her status and aim high.

A natural comparison point here is Yanxi Palace which depicts the same characters, around the same time period (slightly shorter span), and was aired in the same year. In the first half, Yanxi Palace does depict the rise of an underdog – it shows a servant rising through the ranks without demonising her character in the process. That said, it does undercut its own class politics in the second half, but I explain that more in my review of the series.

I will round this off by saying the acting in Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace is incredible. I found Wallace Huo to be a little lacklustre in the first half but when he switched, my god, did he switch. So I changed my mind pretty fast. Special mention goes to Vivian Wu who beautifully portrayed a deeply complicated character. I think the only reason I'd rewatch this drama would be to just focus on her and her character's development.

RUYI is the Gold Standard

During the pandemic I was trying to find something new and different to lose myself in. I adored THE LAST EMPEROR when it was released in the 80's and wondered what Joan Chen had been doing with herself. I saw she was a 'star' in RUYI and checked it out. Let's just say --

-- she didn't last long in the series and that was a bait and switch move that introduced me to Zhou Xun. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am they did that bait and switch. Zhou Xun was a revelation of Chinese women and culture. Something I had no idea I desperately needed. There was a literal plague spreading on the planet and thanks to Zhou Xun my wife and I were cool with staying in our condo and absorbing this eye candy emotional buffet.

One AMAZING actress after another. Too many to list. I'm serious. RUYI is how I found MyDramaList, because here I can see what actors like Zhou and Chang and frankly most of the cast have done since. At least two RUYI actors are in MISSING PERSONS which alone made that must see TV. Because of this one emotional rollercoaster imperial epic WOW --

-- I watch 3 episodes of some sort of Chinese show a week. I am completely obsessed. I've now seen most of Zhou Xun's work and can name all sorts of Chinese actors like I frickin' lived in China. I actually stopped a Chinese couple in America, started talking about these shows, and they couldn't believe this white Anglo dude knew more about them than they did.

If you haven't noticed I'm not going to tell you what the story is about. If by Episode 4 you couldn't care less than walk. I promise you this show will hook you hard and stay with you months after you finish it. Some sick people rewatch and rewatch but I found it so emotionally draining I'm going to wait a LONG time before I re-watch it.

What I do want you to know with all of the sincerity of Western society is that Zhou Xun is Eastern Society's Bette Davis. If you know Bette that's one amazing compliment. It means I can watch said actor in anything. When they're young, old, in a great film or a piece of garbage. Their presence is so influential they rescue and perfect almost any production.

Stop reading this and start watching RUYI'S ROYAL LOVE IN THE PALACE. It's in my TOP TEN SERIES EVER which includes the original STAR TREK series, THE PRISONER, TWIN PEAKS, COLUMBO, STRANGER THINGS, DOWNTON ABBEY and TALES FROM THE LOOP.

If you like dramas about scheming women, here are 87 episodes you’ll really enjoy. Yeah, I think it was a bit too long and it got a little monotonous.

It starts off full of energy as Ruyi marries into the palace. Then it sort of slow down to a more majestic pace. With 87 episodes, they don’t need to rush anything. They can take their time and set up some really complicated plots with payoffs.

While this is a romance at the heart of the story, it’s very subtle sometimes. Simmering, battered, suffering and dormant sometimes. It’s hard to cheer on a romance where the guy is constantly picking up new women and believing their evil schemes. Sigh.

So this is enjoyable, but way too indulgent for me. I started skipping around a bit since it could have been edited a bit.

This was a beautiful production, The set and costumes were beautifully done as were the exteriors. I was intrigued by Mulan hunting grounds for Emperor Qianlong's annual autumn hunt. Second came the acting of Zhou Xun, our ML who plays, Ruyi, Emperor Qianlong's Empress. I loved her internal turmoil and how she kept everything inside, always composed and guarded. She cried very few times in this series and when she did, it was moving. I do wish they had cast younger actors for the MLs as teenagers. Ms Zhou is in her 40s and playing a 15 year old Ruyi at the beginning of the series was an unconvincing stretch. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed with Wallace Quo's performance as they suspicious and distrustful Emperor. He portrays all the decadence and entitlement of an overly pampered and self centered individual, yet he is depthless and uninteresting.

The storyline was tedious and repetitive, going from one evil deed among the concubines to the next. At first you do feel for the young lovers but as the years wear on and each one is changed by the experiences and circumstances of their lives, the great love they have for one another is put to the test. No one wants to watch a series about the reality of a long marriage. Everyone wants the MLs to live happily ever after. Alas, the final episodes are so tragic and hard to watch that you wonder why you spent so much time on a couple that would hurt each other more often than they claimed to be devoted.

I felt dissatisfied with the drama but pleased with the aesthetic beauty of the production, some great performances by our ML, and most of the supporting cast. It was so sad, however, that I can never bring myself to rewatch this title. I was left sad and disgusted by the cruelty and ruthlessness of Emperor Qianlong.

interesting heroine with a view from a different angle

Story/Production: different view + too many episodes
Many historical dramas are telling about the fights in the harems to gain the emperor's favors, where the heroine is slowly climbing up to the ranks of an concubine. There's a lot of killing, conspiracies, betrayal etc. The drama got all of this, but the thing, which they did different, is actually to focus it with the view from the losers side walking the opposite way. I think that's one of the things, which do stick out and keep the interest of the viewer.
The production is decent for the budget, but imo they could have condensed it much more into less episodes.

Characters/Cast/Acting: miscast
The character of emperor I felt is probably the more realistic approach. Did he like Ruiyi? Yes, but does he love her unconditionally? Nope, he's an emperor and he got many wives. I actually prefer this over the fairy tale image, which could find in many other emperors from other historical dramas.
The FL character is depicting someone, who wants to hold on their own morals and beliefs despite being in such a gruesome palace. And unlike most happy go lucky fairy tale ending, it showed a more realistic, what you sometimes have to pay as a price.

I actually like the characters and I would say that both FL and ML are actually competent actors. BUT I felt they didn't completely sunk in their characters and blend in completely. Wallace Huo couldn't convey the emotions completely imo. And he somehow gave an aura more like a master from a rich household than an emperor. Zhou Xun is having a too mature vibe and acting, for such an innocent or even naive character. Not her fault and probably the stylist's, her lips were also very distracting due the make up.
All the side characters and actors weren't every oustanding in my eyes, so there isn't much to say from my side.

Overall: A drama with a more realistic approach and focus on the "loser's" side, but could have done better with different main leads and shortened amount of episodes.

The sets and costumes and beautiful female actors draw the viewer in and keep them hooked. The fact many of the characters have multiple titles and names (and these often change over time) which can be very confusing and make it hard to follow. The English subtitles are terrible in places, as if a literal translation is being made, given the very different grammars Chinese/English this doesn't help and at times they grate on the historic atmosphere - referring to multiple persons as 'guys' is lazy and inappropriate. I know torture practices in ancient china were indescriabably awful and what is portrayed here by comparison is tame but it still comes over as revolting, as does the deliberate humiliation. By 50 episodes in I found the waring in the harem and spitefulness, not to say downright malice, too much. The Emperor, Dowager Empress and Empress are very flawed characters and the regime in the Forbidden City is irredeemable.

Ride of frustation and some moments of glory

WOOW what a ride. This drama really surprises me, I already knew it was going to be a sad ending, but I still wanted to see how all this plays out at the end.
It's impossible to not feel sad for Ru Yi at the end, if she never married the Emperor maybe she would be free all her life...

I have to admit RY's character pissed me off sometimes, I wanted to see her more "evil" with spies and powerful allies, but she was always so chilled and people framed her so many times and she still didn't turn "evil". I ended up respecting her for maintaining her manners and ideals till the end.

Han Lain's character surprised me a lot, she was a coward and would cry for everything but when she opened her eyes, she never closed them again hahah she was loyal till the end and even got her hands dirty for RY.

The Emperor... well, I didn't feel sorry for him, he lost so many people along the way and regretted overtime but still didn't learn. He died alone just what he deserves.

Jia and YW performance in this drama was fantastic and the retributionwas perfect for them.
