Ishii Fudeko was born as the daughter of a baron (during the Meiji era) and studied in France. She spoke three languages. She was born both beautiful and intelligent. American President Ulysses Grant praised her as the most intelligent woman in the country on his visit to Japan in 1879. Her life changed when she found out that her daughter had intellectual disabilities. Ishii Fudeko went on to become a pioneer who established education, care and social services for developmentally disabled children in Japan. Edit Translation
