In my opinion, the drama was good. I expected a little bit more from this series. The plot disappointed me. I was expecting something else. However, very pleased me costumes and set design. I spent a long time in front of on my computer watch this drama and I was very curiosity fates, the main heroes. The happenings in drama quickly changing. Maybe such was a plan. Place where masters teach young killers were a good idea on drama. The harm that idea has not been used of the end. I'm pleased plays with actors.
Summarizing drama was good and had the very beautiful set design.

This is one of the best Chinese dramas I have ever watched and I believe that it greatly underrated. There are so many twists and turns that get you bawling your eyes out and the fighting scenes will have your eyes glued to the screen. To top it off, it had the most unexpected ending that breaks off from the expected cliché happy endings. The dramas songs are very emotional and you'll end up listening to them long after you finished the drama. The headstrong female lead together with the cute male lead will leave you itching for the next episode!

The title says it all...excellent acting, cinematography, soundtracks etc. Tragic, deep, brutal drama. It explores all about good and evil, right or wrong, obsession, true love and the ultimate sacrifice. There is injustice and loads of pain. Watch it if you like tragic romances with an epic love story, love triangle, action and suspence. Smart script, meaningful/deep dialogues. Great ost. Loved it from start to finish. At first i was skeptical to let myself be diasappointed because i thought it would be more about fighting and missions but if you keep watching you'll get to the good part and understand some things must happen to strengthen the plot and keep it deep.

I started watching this drama out of boredom and since it have only 35 episodes which is great so I can binge watch this over the weekend. And to my surprise, this drama is so underrated. The story line is not what we usually seen in C-drama.
There is no unnecessary cheesy scene between lead couple. You know they love each other just by their acting, how they protect each other and with the look in the eyes.

This drama deserve recognition and have I mentioned how great the lead male and female acting were?

I quite enjoyed this show. A typical Chinese-drama story line, the main couple Wan Mei and Chang An gradually fall in love only to face several tragic obstacles to their relationship.

In my opinion, the two leads acted very well. There were no kiss scenes in the show, but it was at the level of chemistry where you could tell they loved each other simply from the looks and occasional hugs they shared with one another. I am also very picky with background music, but Bloody Romance really nailed it - Especially with tragic/heart-wrenching scenes. The music really drives up the sad factor, loved it!

I didn't read the novel so I can't comment on what's different, but from the perspective of someone who's watched only the drama, my main gripe is that while the story started off great, it felt a little rushed and slightly unbelievable towards the end. It also felt as if the relationship of the main couple wasn't happy for that long. In fact, they suffered from misunderstandings more often than not. It got to a point where I was just sick and tired of the continuous tension in their relationship (I was also sick and tired of crying..... my heart hurt so bad seeing them suffer). But nonetheless, the romantic tension is so strong in some scenes you can almost taste it.

Ultimately.. this is not the drama you wanna watch for a fluffy and lighthearted romance. But if you're in a masochistic, ugh-pls-just-let-them-be-happy kinda mood with a craving for good acting, you've come to the right place. I would definitely rewatch this drama, if only to see the main couple together again!

P.S. The male lead actor Qu Chu Xiao gets hotter the more you see him *squeal*

I honestly LOVED this drama. I loved everything! The props, clothing, the ACTING! I was amazed about how the rookie actors were able to create such beautiful acting!

Music -
As much as I loved the theme song sung by Tia Ray, it was very overused. They had about four other songs they could have used, but they only started using the other songs at the end of the drama. Even the BGM was beautiful... especially the ones for Chang An and Gong Zi.

IF you like a drama without a lot of kissing but a lot of passionate staring....then I TRULY recommend you this drama! <3

A reserved drama.

This drama has no intimate couple scenes just so you know. Everyone went crazy in this drama I swear, but that's what made it interesting. I love how the ml was so strong and was able to withstand anything, but the fl was really weak compared to other female leads I've seen in other dramas. I understand that killing people randomly isn't right, but being slow on your job isn't gonna make the cut either. Wan Mei was really reliant on the male leads, she barely has any sense of independence so if you guys like openly independent and strong female leads then this might disappoint you. What made me get goosebumps in this drama was how the couple was willing to risk everything for each other, which was very touching, also everyone said Gong Zi is cute so look out for that.

This show reveals a story about finding hope in the darkest moments of life, finding true love and devoting to it until the very end.
It is a beautiful story of love between two people who seem to not be destined to each other as life keeps them apart. Apart from the main couple, the drama portraits the longing and sorrow of other people as they try to defy their fate.

At first I was really puzzled wether or not to watch this drama, and I dropped it once after the first episode but I started it again after a while and the story just grew on me.

I expected the female lead and wanted her to become a cold blooded assassin but she didn't. She went through so many death situations but managed to come back alive, stronger but worn out. She found hope in love and was devoted to it until the end.

The love story is full of sorrow, the main couple's love is so pure and strong but so sorrowful.. whenever they find relief in love, they get broken up by fate. They love each other without requirements and selfishness. It is so beautiful .. their story had me crying and hoping for them to never part ways.

The show overall is beautiful. I might have talked mainly about the sorrow in it because it is the main element (in my opinion). But this is not all.
In this drama, there is no 'bad guy' .. only victims of sorrow and injustices.
It shows that everyone has a good side, there is no absolute evil and that everyone has reasons for their wrongdoings.

The opening song portraits the whole atmosphere of the series. It is so beautiful, romantic yet sorrowful. Everytime I listen to it, I can imagine the love story of every character.

As I said before, I didn't plan to watch this show and I thought it won't be worth it but it proved me wrong. Definitely a must watch!
It is the most realistic drama I've ever seen.. everything, characters, development, behaviour, even the ending is realistic.
10/10!
The writer really managed to make a wonderful story, without clichés and unnecessary plots. Beautiful!

Bloody Romance is Bloody Good

Let me start by saying this is one of my favorite shows I ave ever watched. It is not pleasant or romantic at all, but it is one of the most well written and well acted dramas you would want to see. For those looking for light, happy and romance this is not your show, For those looking for a great show with a not always happy storyline that can be disturbing at times, then this show is highly recommended.

it is the story of Wan Mei who is sold to a brothel by her father, already not the typical storyline, for some rice, She manages to escape and ends up in a city of female assassins. She is assigned a shadow Chang An who is her trainer, body guard and servant, and as she is given assassination assignments she also ends up in the line of Dong Xi, a blind probe of the country. Not at all a typical story. Some of it is actually brutal to watch.

As for acting, all I can say is wow. The villain is a bit over the top, aren't they all, but the 3 leads are fantastic. Wang Duo does a really great job with his character Dong Xi who at times himself is not sure what he does or does not feel for Wan Mei. Shaw Qu plays the stoic shadow Chang An to perfection. I have written in other reviews, this is how to play stoic, His face betrays nothing most of the time but when out does it is magical to view, I cannot say enough about Li Yi Tong and her portrayal of Wan Mei, I have never felt so much with one character (except Ye Hua in TMPB) than I did with her. There are some heart-wrenching scenes that I will never forget and I cannot think of an actress that could have done a better job, I have not seen her in another drama, but I am actively looking for other dramas with her,

Rewatch - definitely! The show is 36 episodes with little filler time and moves along quickly. It is beautifully done from story, to acting, to production values, and the soundtrack. The music from the show is also one of my favorites of all time.

This may not be what you expect and it is not typical, but it is really worth a watch.

"Bloody"

Just as the title suggests, this drama is really "bloody". This drama is about a weak female lead (Wan Mei ) who gradually matures up and became stronger to fulfill her mission to became a chief so other assassins girls won't suffer as she did. Wan Mei gets used by others so much and ends up being in big trouble throughout the story. The drama also shows the struggles of each character and the reason behind their wrongdoings and every one of them has their own mission.

Although this show is not romance-driven, it is highly appreciated. There is a shadow (assassin's slave) name ChangAn who loves her unconditionally and sacrifice everything for her. The love has between Chang and Wei is so beautiful and pure, even there are some tough misunderstandings like when she was captured and went torture, it doesn't become an obstruction for their affection. They truly show that they love each other from the beginning to the very end and that no one can come between them. There is a romance between other characters but it's either unrequited or a terrible ending.

The ending was not satisfying for me but it was nice to see the character growth of Wan Mei at the end.

Unexpected and Underrated Drama

When I started this drama I didn't really have any big expectations or hopes because I was just looking for a past time at that time. Then the story got me hooked because of the realistic characters the writers put in the drama. Real life isn't all flowers and honey so I really liked how they portrayed realistic struggles and plots within the whole drama. The visual effects is not that grand and I know that this came from a small production house so its still remarkable at that level. The actors did a really great job, they got me convinced when they get hurt, angry, and all kinds of emotions so kudos to them. The characters are really well written, though I wished some changes but the character developments are really good. The redemption and all.
Over-all I really think there could be a season 2, In the hopes that the production house gets the approval and budget they need.

A good drama with great characters. Be aware of story bug.

I have mixed emotions for this drama that it is challenging for me to summarize all the feelings in one review.

I would want to focus my review on the actors and characters, esp. for the leading roles. For me, Bloody Romance has one of the most profound characters I have ever seen in Chinese dramas. The other one I can think of is Untamed.

♡ Character Design: Good character design is what makes half of a good plot. Creating personalities that the audience can identify themselves to, feel attracted to, or despise is an art. Their emotional reactions and actions need to be consistent with their personalities and logical to their experiences. Only then can the audience empathize and move along. I think this was very well done with all the characters in this drama, even with the supporting characters: Liu Gang, Xing Feng, Yue Ying, the antagonists Cha Luo and Wan Xiang, and countless "targets" and "their relatives". None of the characters felt as they were merely a tool to progress the story but alive and breathing. A few words to the character design of the main characters:

❤︎ Wan Mei: her character design might feel indeed naive and stupid at the start. Like many others, I was also rolling my eyes at her second mission, cursing the scriptwriter why they made such a weak character an assassin. It did not fit the badass female character image that you would expect this drama to have. When you progress with the show, you will notice that there was a clear purpose to the start. Despite many netizens believing that Wan Mei will become malicious and despiteful after the series of misfortune that has happened to her, she stayed true to her kindness at heart, while at the same time become wiser and stronger. There was no sudden awakening or turning to evil. Throughout the show, you saw her wanting to give up her life or become indecisive; for me, these are prooves of being human and natural.

❤︎ Chang An: "I am missing a Chang An in my life," say many netizens. I understand them. Chang An can fight, cook, and clean; on top, he is kind, loyal, and treasures his master as he cherishes his own life. Chang An loves Wang Mei selflessly and does not expect her love in return. He wants her to be happy even if it means he cannot be with her. And which woman does not wish there is such a man in her life? I have read criticisms of Chang An's big decision to leave his army to save Wang Mei at the end of the show, saying that it's irresponsible and foolish. I have a different view. Chang An was brought up thinking that he is only a stableman. Even after his adoptive family's death, he has only been living for himself and his idea of revenge. Wang Mei became the first person in his life who he loves more than his own life. He cannot repeat the same mistake and hurt her again. At the end of the day, he is Chang An, not Gong Zi. Looking from this perspective, do you still question his decision?

❤︎ Gong Zi: For me, Gong Zi was the most mysterious and tragic character in the whole drama. Until the last episode, I have never really understood him. Gong Zi loved Wang Mei sincerely, helped her multiple times along the way, and was also willing to sacrifice his life for her. Despite all that, Wang Mei kept refusing Gong Zi and accusing him of treating her only as a tool. This has brought a lot of criticism from Gong Zi's fans. My explanation is the following. Gong Zi experienced the trauma of being blinded by his own mother and the tragedy of her death. Because of this, he was shouldering the responsibility of being the owner of Gui Hua City and carrying out her death wishes before he is "allowed" to die. One of them was killing his own father. Death was always around the corner. Not one day has he lived for himself until he the day he met Wang Mei, who became his only light in his life. However, due to some reasons, may that be their master-assassin relationship, his unfamiliarity about love, and his duty... his actions seemed to be conflicting and not truly for the best of Wan Mei. I would say that Gong Zi loved Wang Mei in his own way, but it was not understood. Even Yue Ying, who knew him the best, was confused by his action. Whatever Gong Zi intended to do, I guess we will never really know the truth.

♡ Acting skills: Another reason why Bloody Romance which contributed to the high score. Don't get me wrong; I have fallen in love with countable talented actors and actresses in many previous dramas. What stood out for me that, in Bloody Romance, across the board, all main and supporting actors did a marvelous job depicting all the deep personalities. Perhaps because the drama has a very abusive nature, there are many extreme emotional scenes that characters have to act out. And they have done a marvelous job. My heart was aching so much while watching these scenes.
A few words to the main lead actors and actress:

❤︎ Li Yi Tong (starring Wan Mei): hats down to her! She literately "killed it". She convincingly portraited every trait of the weak and innocent junior assassin, who experienced periods of suffering and challenges later developed into determined and skillful Magnate of Gui Hua City. The scene at which she met Chang An again in episode 16 had almost no lines. But the acting told the whole story and evoked so much heartbreak. No wonder that after this drama, she got so much more popular with three successful shows airing in 2019, and seven in 2020.

❤︎ Shaw Qu (starring Chang An): We all love good looking male leads. In the case of Shaw Qu, I would say his face is less than ordinary. Many netizens have even called him ugly early during the show. Soon enough, however, most of us became captivated by Shaw Qu's outstanding performance as Chang An. We all fall in love with Chang An's forthright character, his unbroken love for Wan Mei, and his mesmerizing low sexy voice. In Chinese drama land, where looks define the fate as an actor, this is a marvelous achievement. This man was only 22 when he starred in Bloody Romance, and I foresee an unlimited future for him as an actor.

❤︎ Wang Duo (starring Gong Zi): Another young and unknown actor, who seduced many female netizens in this show. Very different in terms of status and personality as compared to Chang An, Gong Zi is a complex and strong character full of ambiguities. He loved and sacrificed for Wan Mei his own way but had his objectives and ambition that he could not forego. Despite being the second main lead, I felt Gong Zi had more airtime than Chang An. Using his opportunity, Wang Duo perfectly demonstrated all the complicated feelings. Though I was not a big fan of his character, I cannot imagine Gong Zi being played by anyone else than Wang Duo.

♡ Other admirable aspects of this drama are its interesting world design (beautiful cinematography despite the low budget, the beautifully choreographed fighting scenes, the gorgeous costumes, and one of the most beautiful but emotional title songs of all time.

So why is this drama not a 10 for me?
First of all, the overall plot has quite a few plot holes. Of course, you can say that which drama has not? But these are bugs that just cannot be ignored this easily. The reason why the writer has designed the story this way is probably to create more misery for the lead characters and to dramatize the plot so the audience can shed more tears. Some honorable mentions are below:

★ What purpose did the ending have? If we read the signs correctly, Chang An is still alive - but why, in the first place, did he have to fake his death to Wang Mei? If he wants her to believe he is dead, why did he leave the signs for her to find him? I would have also been thrilled with a happy ending to see both of them united. I would have also been ok with a sad ending that Chang An is dead. But what I don't like is an indecisive writer who thinks that a standard happy ending does not fit the mood of this drama, but a sad closure will leave the fans outraged. Instead, we get this in-between open ending... and from what I have heard, there is no rumor for a second season. I also don't foresee that there are any proper materials for a second season now that Wan Mei has become the Magnate of Chang An.

★ What I and many others have struggled is how Wan Mei fits into the story of a city full of female assassins with her kind personality. She might have had no choice at the start; however, later on, she had so many chances to leave Gui Hua City but chose not to. The reason that she gave is because of Chang An, then because Gui Hua was the only place she could return to, and finally because she cannot leave the other assassin sisters behind. All reasons are problematic to believe, given the hardships she has gone through, that she just isn't made for killing good people and that Chang An himself managed to leave later. And still, the makers made her "trying her best" to mislead her targets, eventually did not bear to kill them, but was luckily saved because the targets killed themselves or someone helped her to kill them. This weird plot just openly invites criticisms. Sadly a lot criticism went to the female lead herself.

★ Finally, this leads to the last big gap: Wang Mei broke so many rules but was always saved by someone not because she is competent but because she has the main character's aura. On top of that, despite hating Wan Mei so much, Hua Luo even promoted her, so Wan Mei got the chance to challenge her position. Don't give me the excuse that this is because Hua Luo respects the rules.... she is the freaking Magnate!

So overall, this drama definitely has big weak spots. But I would still recommend this drama to those who love good character designs (including a male lead who will live in my heart for a long-time), heart-wrenching romances, and marvelous acting.
