I am now such a kiwi that not only did Cheng Yi get me to watch this show for him, I have now found myself rewatching it because of him as I understand that a lot of his characters are tragic with sad endings, whereas this one is a satisfying conclusion. People are more than their face. This was his breakthrough role and I can see why ?
***

I was told that Cheng Yi is still alive at the end of the series so I made it to the end alive with him but feeling just as comatose.

I am starting to pick up on cues in the first few episodes that tell me whether or not I'm going to like a show. This is one of those shows. I initially dropped this at episode 3 but Mysterious Lotus Casebook is defeating every other C-drama as my favourite C-drama right now and I'm a little in love with Cheng Yi and I wanted more of him so I picked it up again just for him. I was honestly not interested in any one else. I was skipping the sister (I found her very annoying) and 6th senior scenes loads of times before I was interested in them. I skipped a lot of side stories. It was around episode 21 when Cheng Yi starts getting tortured was when I finally stopped skipping and paying attention.

The FL not having her 6th senses didn't make a lot of sense to me because she could still see and hear and smell etc so she technically still had them but a minor thing I could overlook. The one thing I had a big problem with was the cheesey battle moments. I found this very cringey at times when Xuangi would unleash her powers and you would get this Power rangers style level up. I would burst out laughing when I was supposed to be cheering her on. She starts off as the typical FL in too many asian dramas. Naive, childish and a little stupid passed off as innocent. Listen, I get that she doesn't have her senses and doesnt feel the same way as others but she falls face first into Cheng Yi's lap while he's sitting in a bath and just continues like, oh, wait, I dropped something and just smiles happily while she gropes around the tub, and my sweet boy is just sitting there, cupping his manhood, speechless. I mean, I laughed but really? That's not innocence, that's just dense.

This pretty much continues until she realises that she's the reincarnated God of War. After that, we lose the naivety, and we get a deeply manipulated and emotional FL instead. Again. This is where Cheng Yi saved me because I would give up with this kind of character and would make jokes about taking a shot every time you hear 'Si Feng'.

But Cheng Yi. I like his work. I like his face. I like his voice. He calms me and I was able to find my grounded centre every time he appeared. He did the best with the character he had been given. He does seem a little bit more stiff in this series but that may be how he's was told to play the character, who's whole purpose is to get beaten and abused through out most of the series. His whole purpose is to love and redeem and the FL which can feel a little flat after a while. But again, my bias saved me here. If it had been anyone else or if I didn't know Cheng Yi, I'd have dropped this series really quickly.

Another notable mention is Liu Xue Yi. This is the 3rd series I've seen with him and he's creeping up beside Cheng Yi in my favouritism. If I didn't know this actor, I would have been wanting to rip his eyes out but I actually enjoyed watching him play an incredibly hateable villain, which makes it easier when you are faced with a character like Hao. He's the worst kind of villain because he's obsessed with his own self righteousness and he's a little psychotic, that I honestly found it a little strange at the end that everyone felt sorry for him while he just faded into dust to be reborn as a mortal, WHILE MY BOY is lying fricking bleeding and dead for the 100th time.

The Jade Emperor is probably the most useless, all powerful character I think I've ever seen.

By episode 40, I was back to skipping again. It lost it's momentum for me and as per trend, the last stretch of episodes just went off the wall crazy that I was rolling my eyes at just how ridiculous and off the wall the plot got. It wasn't enough for Xaungi to be the God of War, she's the Devil Star as well. And was a man. So I can imagine a lot of people just being like huh? by the time they get to those episodes. The ending was also ridiculous but at least it was a happy conclusion. Cheng Yi was Momma while Xuangi ran around drinking and enjoying her mortal life, seeming to have reverted back to her old clueless self. AKA. Si Feng continues to get walked over but this time it's in the name of having fun.

I really loved the characters Teng She and Liu. If I had seen more of them earlier on in the series, I'd paid attention quicker. They were great to watch.

An unexpected big hit of this show is the soundtrack. I am absolute Si Feng in love with the song Love like Coloured Glass. It was ep 28, with a scene on the bridge when I suddenly clicked on the song. If it played before I hadn't noticed but that's what happens when you're not fully invested in a show. You miss things. I immediately stopped the video to look up that song and it's been played ever since.

So again, thank you Cheng Yi. I enjoyed watching you and I got introduced me to a new favourite song.

Impressive, really deserves its success.

I usually never write reviews, but this drama has left me in awe. At first, I was skeptical; not going to lie, but I'm not a huge fan of the female lead. Over the past two years, I've seen/heard so many good reviews, and finally watched it. Wow. I am ABSOLUTELY mind-blown. There are so many plot twists, and the story is very captivating. The acting by Cheng Yi (male lead) will make you absolutely head-over-heels for him. **NOTE** if you don't really like the "misunderstandings" trope... well lets just say this drama could be titled "Love and Misunderstandings"... haha. However, the plot and everything else will just make you... go CRAZY for them!

One thing I will say, is the amount of times the male lead spits out blood is a little... haha. I would say this drama is on the same level as Ashes of Love, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, etc. It's really a masterpiece. I have yet to rewatch it yet (because I don't want my heart to break again for Si Feng... ) but I know I will be rewatching it soon. Trust me. You will NOT regret watching it. Don't worry- it's a happy ending!

Great story

I really loved the story and the characters. You get to know the real meaning of love. The male leads love is unconditional. He just love the female lead. It’s true love cause it does not matter whose body or what gender he just loves her as she is and ready to accept her in any form.
The plot and detailing was so good. It had good mystery and at the same time it showed how mortal cherish and enjoy their life. It was somewhat giving message that mortal life we enjoy and experience everything in life like sorrow, love and sadness. This Drama also focus on three reclaim that every one is equal not just heaven or those immortal living in heaven are superior than demon. Lastly the male lead and female lead was v beautiful character including the supporting role they all made us interested and hooked up.

Amazing Drama!

Loved the show! Music and set was so beautiful! I loved the characters as well. At first I thought Xuan Ji was kinda dumb and not the cutest but Crystal Yuan portrayed the character so well that at the end I thought Xuan Ji was so beautiful. I think they did well with aging the character. Si Feng was always hot and when he’s dressed in red he looked gorgeous.

Supporting characters had interesting storylines and really kept things interesting, especially Teng She and Qing Long.

I’d probably have to wait like a couple months to rewatch since the show is so long, but definitely worth it! Especially episode 52 with one of the only kisses I’ve seen in cdramas that isn’t like eyes open and just a peck. It was adorable with how happy Si Feng was, and the chemistry between the main couple was believable and beautiful.

This drama did an outstanding job with the drama. Heard a lot about it from social media platforms so I decided to give it a try. Boy am I glad that I actually took the time to watch this drama. It has a nice storyline, the character roles are unique, and visual scenes are also appealing. I really enjoyed the acting skills of cheng yi. This drama let me enter another world of cdrama fantasies. Though to me it has some parts that are similar to the Ashes of Love drama. In a way where it was similar yet also contrasted Ashes of Love. I think the production team did a good job.

Nice Story but Lot of Misunderstanding

This is my very first review on this page. And I'd like to write after I finished it.

I decided to watch this because a lot of people said this is a great drama and has some similarities to other Wuxia.
For 59 episodes, I started enjoying the story after 30. There is too much misunderstanding that made me exhausted. Some characters that I hope will be better as time goes on, just do not match my expectation.

I watched Cheng Yi from The Dream of Chang'an, and I really like how he portrayed the character. And he really did a great job for this drama. I adore his character, but the FL, I'm sorry.

The FL made me suffocate just because of her behavior for the first round of stories. You don't know how happy I am when she knows the truth. Crystal Yuan does a good job as FL, but I'm not really getting the God of War vibe from her, although she wears the armor or has a fierce hairstyle.

Other characters that catch my eyes are Liu Xue Yi, Bai Shu, and Fu Fang Jun. They really fulfill my expectation for their character.

The music is just so-so for me,. Some are good, but some just sound not to my taste.

The Story was good, but for me, the continuous misunderstanding parts are made me exhausted.

Overall I like this drama, but for now, I don't feel like I'm gonna watch it again. But it's still worth watching if you want to watch it. I fall in love with Cheng Yi and can't wait to watch his upcoming drama.

Worth the hype but...

After watching Ashes of love it was hard for me to find something as great as it until I came across love and redemption. I am someone who just recently got into historic dramas and is very picky of what I watch, after a few time of reading good stuff about love and redemption I finally gave it a chance.
I love the story line! I think it had great plot and twists and I never saw coming and honestly I think it was because of the plot, had me finish all the episodes. Tbh, towards the end I got a little annoyed about the fact Si Feng was sacrificing SO much in comparison to Xuan ji, to the point it was so biased and annoying to watch. Not to mention, cheng yi's acting is superb! He got me heartbroken so many times but the actresses for FL is not so outstanding... towards the end I actually found her quite annoying and actually believed Si Feng does not deserve her!
This drama reminds me so much of Ashes of love which kept me watching, similarly to AOL the FL is not "normal" xuan ji doesn't have her 6 senses likewise how jinmi did not know what love mean't. Difference here is, even after xuan ji finds all her 6 senses she was still stubborn almost pathetic!

Sifeng is a Simp

"Sifeng is suffering - do you wish to continue? Press yes or no." These are the words I had in mind every time I was deciding whether or not to hit the next episode button.

Before watching this show, I was warned that there would be a lot of blood spitting and misunderstandings. I didn't actually realize there would be THAT MUCH blood spitting. People were not kidding.

When I was 20+ episodes in, I realized I had basically been watching the ML suffer continuously. I mean CONSTANT suffering. Who thought this was a good idea? It was at that point I wondered if it really was worth it to continue with the next 30 episodes. I started to empathize and personally felt pained myself while watching him.

So let me tell you - I continued and went all the way to the end. I don't think everyone can, but I realized I may very well be a xianxia junkie. I think I enjoyed the ride; I mean I blew through 59 episodes within 3-4 days.

I think at some point the show had a meta joke about Sifeng's suffering. It was so excessive that they must've just added more for the hell of it. This guy is the definition of a simp and it was hard to watch, but I had to keep watching to see when this clueless FL would turn around. There were times when I wanted to yell at him through the screen, "Don't just stand there with that pained look, defend yourself!!!!"

Phew. I think out of a lot of xianxias, this one actually had a pretty decent and satisfying ending. While the journey may not be for everyone, I am glad I went for the ride and now can understand all the Cheng Yi spitting blood images I see.

Sifeng is a simp. An iconic one.

Top 5 - Si Feng All The Way!

This is in my Top 5 Chinese Dramas!!!

As written elsewhere: Love Between Fairy and The Devil awakened me, Ashes of Love totally broke me and Love and Redemption brought me much needed relief and healing.

From Viki:

"The leader of the Shao Yang clan hosts a magic and martial arts tournament for young apprentices. His daughter Chu Xuan Ji (Crystal Yuan), who has been deprived of the use of her senses, has been entered in the competition – even though her skills are far from advanced.

Also taking part in the competition is the Lize Palace’s star student Yu Si Feng (Cheng Yi).

Students are forbidden from embarking on romantic relationships with one another. But when the two meet, they first become firm friends…and then start to develop much deeper feelings for one another."

From me:

The "magic and martial arts" tournament is actually held every four years and there are five "human" sects that participate each and every time. On or around their 16th birthdays (same day) Chu Xuan Ji and Yu Si Feng meet by accident just before the tournament and later become friends, however, it is Yu Si Feng that starts to fall in love with Xuan Ji first as she has lost a number of senses so doesn't know how to love.

In their world, demons are not really accepted and are seen as evil, so the sects are meant to protect everyone from demons even if it means killing demons off. However, there is a secret the Lize palace keeps that could undo the allegiance of all five sects.

The real story, if the truth be known, is about a demon god being punished for 1000 years by being sent to the human realm to repent and get rid of all that pent up anger even though that God was actually wronged. However, that God isn't the only one made to endure those 1000 years as there is one other made to suffer through it too...

We, the viewers, come in on the demon God's last life in which one chance remains to get it right...

I really enjoyed Love and Redemption because it was one massive adventure all the way!

It is full of action, great story telling and well paced plus it is Si Feng (Cheng Yi) and most of his male friends that make this series happen!
Also, silver snake, the monkey spirit and lord flying snake.

I didn't think too much of Crystal Yuan although she was tolerable in the first 20 or so episodes, but after that she became someone some of us would have liked to slap if they could and readily step in to find a more suitable love replacement for Si Feng who was deserving of a better equal.

However, despite all that, this drama was truly outstanding with the story, plot, cast, costumes, thematics, music and cinematography.

It will remain in my top 5 for a very long time to come not to mention I watched it back to back twice in a row.

Highly recommended!

Cheers for well deserved happy ending!
I was actually pleasantly surprised with how well this series kept me interested even though there were nearly 60 episodes. I will say it started to drag a bit more than I’d like once I got to around the 40th episode. I started skipped through some of the filler. Still impressive for how long the show was.
MISUNDERSTANDINGS. Period. This shows revolves around misunderstandings and you’ll probably start the get frustrated with some of them. There’s a lot of happy scenes that ruined with misunderstandings and then they’re back to happy after talking. Definitely a roller coaster ride but a predictable ride.
The characters were cast very well. I think they’ll worked so well together and fit their parts perfectly. You’ll feel happy for a lot of them at the end.
The CGI in this is great too. There’s a lot of it and it doesn’t seem cheesy so it was nice to see.
Overall I really enjoyed Love and Redemption and would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for an engaging story with a couple frustrating parts but a happy ending.
