Unexpectedly Good (with a wide range of feels) but Acting and Plot Pacing is Lacking

The Moon Brightens for You was unexpectedly good. At first glance, this show might seem like one of those goofy romcoms, with a cold-stern MC + naive innocent FL and their hijinks together. In a way, it is, but it's also more than that. The plot gets surprisingly serious with sad parts too but the comedy and light-hearted aspects continue to be present from beginning to end.

The first half of the drama has a stronger focus on the SML, and although parts are relatively light-hearted, there's still moments that are serious and captivating. I slowly watched the first half; it was good to watch an episode or two once in a while, and it was an easy, light-hearted watch but nothing too exceptional. The second half, I binged and I was hooked. There was a shift to more serious issues but romcom elements did not disappear which was great to see -- the tone of the show didn't change without reason to make it seem like a new show.

Acting: Definitely the worst part of the show. Fair Xing (FL) plays a mostly bubbly and cheerful girl but it was a bit too much. Lots of smiling... too much smiling... and if you've seen Put Your Head on My Shoulder, you should know she's a good actress, but this was a bit too much. With so much "forced" smiling, it became a bit awkward to watch, and often, she didn't smile with her eyes so it was just seeing a lot of =D face from her. She performed very well during the serious/sad moments so overall, was okay. Alan Yu (ML) did a poor job. His face was too stiff, his emotions seemed unnatural, and Chinese netizens complained about his "chicken mouth" which made him seem a bit odd at times, rather than a "number one attractive playboy that his character was. His acting gets better during moments where he has to show more emotions but still not very good. SML did well. Princess was okay (but annoying). The other supporting cast were very good, every single one of them: the assistant, maid, general, SML's sister. Villains were okay, nothing to write home about.

Plot: What makes the show stand out is the plot. Starting off relatively cliche and light, it moves to more serious tones as it progresses. It's extremely unique since the show spends a long long long time with FL+SML (which makes sense plot-wise and character-development-wise) so it makes the ML's unrequited love a particularly unique plot point. However, this really made the FL+ML's relationship suffer in terms of development. As a viewer, you will be able to see how and understand why everything is happening (relationship-wise), but you might not FEEL it. This was the main issue in pacing since the FL+ML's relationship might feel relatively rushed and viewer's will be reluctant to feel attached. SLS isn't really here since the love-triangle is handled pretty well and reasonably. I thought character decisions were pretty logical (which is surprisingly rare in these type of more budget costume dramas) and there wasn't a reliance on cliches (unreasonable self-sacrifice, annoying in-laws, overly annoying misunderstandings, etc).

So should you watch this?

Conclusion: I won't talk much about the other aspects since they're not really relevant to the overall enjoyment. Watch this if you want unrequited love to be an important plot point. Surprisingly deep and emotional plot for a "romantic" and "funny" show so it's not just all fluff which might get boring. Just be wary of the acting (mostly from ML... it was sooo awkward at times) and the pacing. I enjoyed it but wouldn't be a show I'd re-watch.

A Light, Fun-Filled and rather Fast-Paced Idol Wuxia Drama~!!

Hmm, that was unexpectedly light and fun despite all the unjustifiable killing and story manipulation.

Actually.. I have mixed feelings for the story itself and would've ranted my way all throughout this review if they took the bruised and broken path; but I guess they have a clear plan for this drama as a whole that they were able to execute and conclude the story pretty well despite all those questionable plot holes.

I don't really wanna dwell into the con's of this drama but let me just mention a few to summarize some of it.

× The relentless killing just felt odd to me. I understand that most of them were the sacrifial lamb for the story build up but the way they do it just felt so wrong in my opinion. They introduced and killed the suppossed important characters like it's no ones business.

× The expected yet sudden change of FLs love affair. Like, woah. I myself find it really weird that they build her relationship with the 2ndML for more than half of the story just to finally pair him with the ML at the last 15 episodes of the drama. I mean, that made a lot of sense but everything felt so incredibly rushed that I myself don't know if I'll be glad about it or not.

Anyways, aside from those mentioned above, the rest either felt good or decent to me. There might be some other scenes that affected the drama but most of them are just minor stuff and aren't worth mentioning anymore.

One great thing they did that made this drama redeem itself is how they kept the last 10-15 episodes rather calm, slow-paced and sweet. They toned it down so much and build a lot of romantic and fun scenes between the main leads that they were able to salvage the entire story and kept all of it intact and in proper places.

Above everything else this drama is truly fun to watch and is considerably a Good Idol Wuxia drama.

Story - 8.5, It wasn't perfect but definitely not bad either. It is in between good and fair. For a 36 episodes drama it is indeed lacking in terms of plot progression and I think they could've worked on it a little more better to make the story more worth it... but overall it was decent.

Acting/Cast - 9.5, For an Idol drama it is really good. Acting is fine since most of them doesn't really include heavy scenes that requires more emotions. But I must say that even those scenes were executed really well. I'm satisfied with the Cast and their overall acting and synergy.

Music - 9.5, It was enjoyable, something that truly fits the energy and vibe of the drama. It's just that my preference is quite weird and I was quite sad about the intro not being a Ballad. Lol~

Rewatch Value - 8.5, It was fine. A drama I would watch again if someone asked me to watch it with them. There was nothing really remarkable about it so watching it once is enough.

Overall - 9.0, I would've given it an 8.5 but they were able to fix a lot of the parts i was unsatisfied with and brought lots of justice to the other CPs so I would still give it this rating. Overall feel of the drama is fine and nothing really much to criticize or pick-on with. I would just say that they could've lessen the scenes between FL and 2nd ML and instead gave more romantic scenes to the Main Leads. Cause, that's how it should be. Come on.

Half enjoyable, half disappointing

I was excited to watch this drama and it started very well. Both ML and FL are interesting characters, plot is established well at the beginning and makes you want to watch next episode. Half way in the drama ... plot starts to show some flaws, repetition and absurdities .... i had to fast forward some episode as they were too long and unnecessary for the overall story.
Unfortunately, this drama is not my cup of tea and did not work for me. Too many things are missing and it did not bring me any emotions.

It is a miss and i would not recommend this drama. I did prefer Legend Of Fei for reference.

This drama was a good watch. I can't say Yu Meng Long did a great job, lol he is still pretty much stone faced in this one too. ( that's his character lol ) . It ws worth watching for the female lead actress Xing fei.

Female lead- is the daughter of the Zhan family. She wants to explore the world of wu lin and makes her journey to be make Wu lin righteous again. She meets the male lead who is the most handsome guy in the region/area. They form a friendship. I like the female lead because she is quirky, kind, adventurous. Male lead's character is smart, collective, calm and cold. His personality is kinda boring because he doesn't have any martial arts ability, due to him having this sickness.

The story starts with the female lead falling in love with the second male lead. Because they both have martial art abilities. He is able to save her time and time again, when they are faced with danger and trying to find the Wu lin master badge. Initially i though i got the wrong male lead lol but later on there are rifts between the female and second male lead's relationship( which i can say is pretty cliche) All at the same the the male lead played by Yu meng long has developed a crush for the female lead but never said it out loud because of his sickness/ being poisoned. When ever he gets too emotional the poison in his system will triggers him to cough/ heart hurts. If that happens too much he will eventually die. In the mean time evil people are after the Zhan family because they hold the manuscript to the powerful martial art , called the seven swords. The evil person is trying to learn that power to become the strongest.

In a search for the the seven swords manuscript, forces the leads to jump off the cliff. At that point the female lead already had her arm/leg veins and ligament torn, which means she would be able to learn other martial arts again. They wake up to find that she has been cured and is introduced to this weird old dude. He helps them recover and completely get rids of the poison in the male lead's system. Female lead relearns the seven swords martial arts and becomes good at it. The main goal was to fight the evil dude.

This drama was martial arts focused but had cute and funny moments. Like all of the characters basically had romantic developments/ other half. The maid of the the female lead is funny. She is always so clumsy and wants to help the female lead but ends up tripping.

Romance- there is not to much chemistry between the two leads initially. When they spent more time which each other the relationship seemed more believe-able. Their kissing is not too passionate, but becomes better later on.

Unexpected.

Okok let’s just talk about this show real quick.... I am going to try my best to keep it both simple and bluntly honest. So other viewers let’s not get into a heated argument if you disagree with me rather let’s open up an area of discussion :)

So first of all, I watched this drama fully till Ep 30+ I started to skim through till the end but hear me out! I know and have an rough idea of WHATS WHAT. I am rather impatient and hard to please when it comes to things like these because I have a preference or expectation that is something to be discovered when I watch these dramas. So the fact that I watch a 36 episodes in two days. In full. Is a new achievement for me. Nothing to be proud of but still :)

Anyways, back to the topic at hand. I am gonna try my best not to release much spoilers but. This drama have unexpectedly pleased me and created this whole other genre of preference that I didn’t even know I desired. The plot of the show was interesting, entertaining, intriguing and it made me in a state of anticipation every time I switched it on to watch.

Mmmm it’s not completely perfect but it was rather good, like really up there. The characters especially the second leads , have done a job well done. The female lead maid and her group of male friends she made in the barracks were my favourite second leads. They were adorable, witty, super loyal and supportive to the female lead who was like MULAN in this drama.

Although this female lead, her as an actress she seems small and fragile but in this drama she was strong smart brave loyal and trustworthy. She was able to win a battle by killing the opponent general with her martial art skills and some swordsmanship thingy that her later love interest gave to her although it was against the rules. You ll get it if you watch the drama.

At first I thought I would have some trouble following the drama with all the politics and what not but thankfully that didn’t happen oddly. Which makes me like it even more.

This story doesn’t only focus on romance but also on other important aspects that is important like friendship, loyalty, brotherhood, family. Those heart-warming things.

And can we talk about the love triangle in the drama. I can’t help but feel bad for the first male lead in the beginning cos he have to like love and protect the female lead from afar while she some what fall in love with the other male lead. Who BTW I don’t think ever truly loved her because he married someone else and I don’t care if he’s family was going to die if he go against the emporer edict. He could have thought of something instead of begging to asshole princess grandpa who is in fact the demon. And the princess is the demon granddaughter. She was a biatch.

I mean she means well cos she just really likes the second male lead but sabotaging and trying to do anything to harm the female lead was just an all time low and even if she’s a princess acting like a bully just shows that some who have power can do whatever they want with it even if it is against the law.

But like whatever. I mean the second male lead could have written back to the female lead about the marriage instead of living her in the dust and move on silently with alcohol like WTF. What a jerk. But other than he s poor relationship decisions he was actually a good guy and was a big contributor in carrying out the plan to take out the demon along with the male lead who btw is super smart and decisive and he s planning was top notch. Like he can predict what can plausibly happen and always end up just one foot forward than the villain. Total admiration really.

But hey when the female lead found out about the marriage the scene where she took out her hair and smashed the wedding bracelet in front of her EX WAS LIKE epic! She was a general, no princess can mess with her but making her concubine. I wanted to slap that bitch.

But whatever ofc, the love started to blossom with the leads and like Finally. But I seriously wish it didn’t take so long.

I thought the male lead was going to die because of some Poison but in the end he didn’t which was great because he lived happily ever after with his lover and had a daughter and awaiting a son in the last scene.

However the princess and the second male lead had a son. And well they both died which is great I m sorry. Like they meant to be together so May as well. The son was taken care of by the first leads and it seems there might be a little something something with the children in the future.

I like the oddly unconventional plot twist like the first male lead wasn’t physically strong he wanted to protect her but he couldn’t use martial arts to do so. So he used hes brains but the female lead was too dumb to see it at the time. It shows that you don’t need martial arts or physical strength to end up as a hero.

There’s a little gay element in this drama as well. Which was like oddly weird but definitely different so I like that. But it was some old crazy demon that had a liking with the first male lead not the female which was so different usually it’s the female leads are the pawns haha.

But don’t feel bad for him that crazy demon end up with some old crazy dude in some valley who is the female lead uncle May I add. So that worked out.

I just like that this actress wasn’t fragile, scared. She was strong and was ready to do anything for justice and to help people. Which is really what the story is also.

But they ended up defeating the devil and the devil granddaughter and husband so that’s good haha. Sorry have such resent for this two cos they were assholes to the first female lead. Whether they know or not the grandpa is the demon.. it runs through their veins so probably explains why.

The general who’s in his 40s and the second male lead sister falling in love was also a sweet love story but very subtle nothing too grand or saucy.

Oh yea, in terms of the sauciness it took so long for a kiss or progression between the leads but yea decently saucy but meh.

I have so much emotions and expressions when I watched this show. Like when the first female lead family died was like WHYYYYYYYYY?!?!!??!!! I think the writers wants to squeeze our hearts.

So overall good drama. Great job! I rarely praise a show like this so I mean it’s good. Would I watch it again. Sure! But not too soon cos it would lose that effect of impression it had on me and I want it to last because how often can I discover dramas that are decently good and I actually watch it fully. Not often.

An emotional, but at times, lighthearted and comical historical drama!

Really enjoyed the characters and the display of martial arts in this show. As others have mentioned though, these writers are absolutely ruthless. They don't hold back on killing people haha. I would recommend this show to anyone who is looking to start a emotional, but also at times light hearted and comical, historical drama.

You have to prepare a box of Tissue while watching this series... a lot of "Death Scene" that make u cry....
Its a beautiful Story about Love, Friendship & Sacrifice.... Friends that are willing to die for Friendship.... and U can sacrifice in the name of Love.... I like how the ML give way for his love cause the FL is happy with the man she choose....
All Actors really portrait well...special the FL a lot of "Sad/Death Scene" & she nailed it.... my fave part is when she found out his BF got married to the Princess... their "Roof Scene" is the best when she broke the jade bracelet... waaaa... i got carried away.....
Also dont put knife beside U cause U might stab ur screen because of that spoiled brat Princess who push for marriage... thats the only part i dont like... i felt disappointed that in the end the 2nd ML fall in love with her... good thing they die...

Amazed

This is my first wuxia genre drama that can get me watch it frow the beginning until the end, even now I have rewatched over 20 times. ???

Xing Fei really impressed me with this genre that I never interested. Her acting always sincere.
And the way she get along with her co actor it always great. You can feel the chemistry and respect of each other from their acting.

The story and the execution of this drama was very smooth, make me wanting for more episode. Director and all of thr crew seems had a great fun working on it, so it can deliver very well to the audience, especially to me ???

Very recommended to watch and rewatch ?
