what I have to say?? I really enjoy watching period drama and in this story there is the addition of fantasy and also adds mythical elements. I don't know why but I wasn't interested in the beginning. It didn't seem to me a remarkable story, only later I realized that I was beginning to like it. I hoped in more scenes of affection. I prefer romantic stories even so I was impressed by scenes of war, so I can't say that the romance is the central theme (who is looking for a love story in the past I suggest trying another drama). The music is not less than the story (composed by Joe Hisaishi) and some actors were really good in acting.
P.S. Sorry if there are errors, I'm not very good in English =)

This drama was epic! The timeline, characters, locations, sets, costumes, special effects, everything. Myth, legend and history rolled up into one awesome package. Clearly, this drama had a huge budget. The main thread of the story is to get the prehistoric mythology of the origins of Korea to line up in the end with the historical figure of Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo. To do this requires much help from supernatural forces, most especially from the Four Gods from Heaven said to reanimate for the true Joo Shin King. Fine, just go along for the ride. If you want a big romantic payoff in the end and that’s the reason you’re watching, then you’ll most likely be disappointed. There will be no sullying the purity of historical figures, thank you very much. You’ll recognize many veteran actors, as well as newer faces (in 2007), so the performances were, of course, superb. The story had enough characters of all types to allow for lighter moments and comedy as well. The leader of the Hwacheon Clan was very entertaining to watch, nearly stealing every scene he was in. I believe this compelling drama is a must-see.

I watched this drama because of the good recommodations and because I really love the fantasy/historical genre. After I watched the first two episodes I was so exicited to watch the rest of it. The story started really good and I longed to know how the reborn characters will react when they meet each other again. But then it went all down. The story developed into a total bad direction. I endured it, believing that the story will turn around the next episode. It didn't. The ending was the worst of it all and left me totally unsatisfied (Normally I am not that satisfied with endings, but this one was the worst of all I've ever watched).

It also has it good points, though, if you leave out the story and the acting between the maincharacters in terms of their love relationships. They spend much money for creating the drama. I've never seen such good special effects. The war scenes were impressive and the music really suited the drama. The landscapes were really beautiful and this made the drama in some ways worth watching.

That's the reason why it's hard to rate this drama. The production itself is magnificent, but thinking how they abused the story makes me cry. This could be the best drama I've ever watched but they destroyed everything with the story. They could have made so much out of it, even an ordinary plot would have been better than this. Thus I am still shaking my head thinking about the wasted effort

As a kdrama addict, i recommend my chingus to must watch this. I rewatched it 4/5 times, This drama worth it. I just pray plsssss BYJ - nim come back in k-drama, we are waiting for longgg 7 yrs.

1. Casts- I watched it for for my kdrama love Bae Yong Jun.

2. Romance- the only kdrama without a single kiss , but the chemistry between damduk and sujini is great. When damduk (bae yong) realizes that he needs sujini (lee-ji-ha) by his side, search and run to her like a mad guy ,you feel like - wow !!!

3. Action- if you are fan of it, it's for you. All casts are superb in action .

4. Ending- don't push it saying a bad ending. Be happy that damduk at last found his 2 thousand years love - sujini. Think the ending as, damduk goes to heaven to return so called 'heavenly power' and make the world a peaceful one by himself.

[ Trust me, this 24 hours will be best in your life, you wont regret it - fighting bae yong jun !!! pray for his drama-come back soon :) :) ]

One of the top 5 dramas in K-drama history for me. The acting, the story, the fantasy, the special effects, my girl Lee Ji Ah, and the great Bae Yong Joon. I had tears streaming down my face within the first 10 minutes of episode one. The Legend, Four Gods had me at hello and kept me through 24 exquisite episodes. A MUST SEE if ever there is one.

Epic fantasy advevture. Epic means lots of battles, sword fighting and horses, lots of horses. Fantasy; the first two episodes could have been a movie with all the special effects. The story here was amazing, a prince told he was chosen by heaven to rule and how he came to terms with that.
And yes this is a romance :)
The ending..since other reviewers have commented on the end I will too.
YOU NEED TO READ THE WORDS AT THE ENDING!!!

Definitely a wonderful drama with a solid mixture of myths and legends.

The Legend tells the story of King Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo, one of the Three Kingdoms of ancient Korea. It explores his life and reign, including military conquests; his relationships with the people around him; and the efforts to unify the Three Kingdoms and establish Goguryeo.

The plot, narration, and acting keep the viewer engrossed throughout the series and the visuals are spectacular and dreamy. Definitely a wonderful drama with a solid mixture of myths and legends—it’s nothing less than outstanding.

The OST is equally gorgeous with a music score by the genius Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi, who wrote many film scores for mighty animator Hayao Miyazaki.

The Legend remains one of my all-time favourites, a must-watch.

Lord of the Rings who?

I wrote a rather long review but it accidentally got deleted so I’m gonna try my best to rewrite this quickly.

I remember watching this years ago and loving it and the Dam Duk/Sujini duo, so I decided to rewatch again for the nostalgia factor. And wow, did I forget how well produced this show is. The special effects, the costumes, the sets, the lore - rivals just about any fantasy out there. If you love fantastical lore, then you will love this, especially since it’s original and well weaved into the story telling.

The word building was great, the characters were endearing (Hyeon Go, Cheo Ro, Sujini, Dam Duk and Mu Chi dynamics were my favorite), the music was brilliant (probably the best kdrama score right next to The Great Queen Seon Duk). Joe Hisaishi is a genius.

Of course, the drama doesn’t come without flaws. Although I wished the ending would’ve been slightly different and further expanded on, especially between 2 certain characters who have reunited after years, I understand why it ended the way it did. It fit the protagonist’s motivations and kept with the overall message/continuity.

What I would’ve done though was add at least an epilogue for the rest of the characters. From what I gather, there were some production problems toward the end and the show ended rather abruptly. An epilogue showing the ending of the characters we’ve grown to love - through animation if the actors couldn’t be there - would’ve been a wise add on, instead of the usual narration that we’ve already heard through out the show. I take solace in believing that Dam Duk forever watched over his child and fated love from the Heavens.

Other than that, this is the best fantasy saeguk I’ve seen still after 14 years. I wish there could be a remake of this or a continuation through films. But alas, I’ll treasure this story regardless.

I had been told that this drama is must watch for those who love historical dramas. And people weren't wrong.
The plot is exciting. It's not boring to watch, it's interesting. 24 episodes passed in the blink of an eye. But in my opinion the last 3 episodes were not so good if we compare them to the beginning of the drama. I liked that this fantastic twist made my brain work!
Music was good so 10 from me.
Acting. Oh my god acting. All actors were good. Well except Moon So Ri. I didn't like how she acted in this drama. Lee Phillip became not only one of my favourite actors there but the role he played, it's one of the most fabulous characters in dramas. And he played it well. It was pleasure to watch, every second of it. But the actor who stole my heart? Bae Yong Jun. I didn't watch any of his works. My mistake. But there he's amazing. I don't have enough words to describe his greatness. Just a smile, just a stare and you understand all thoughts of his character. It's a talent. Everything in him played the role. That is how actors should play to make the drama special.
And I just love all the stares. They tell the story. Not the words. Enjoy the silence, because it's so strong.
Although being a romantic soul I wanted something in the end. Okay I wanted a kiss so badly. Wae?!
But I'm telling you this drama about leadership, friendship and love is too good to miss it!

My favorite k-drama ever

I first watched this in primary school (2009) but here I am in 2023, still watching and loving it. I really love this drama. I loved the chemistry between Damdeok and Sujini. The story was great, it just didn’t end the way I wanted because of my love for the two.
My favorite characters: Damdeok, Sujini, Cheo Ro, Jumuchi and Sa Ryang.
My favorite episodes: 4&5 because that’s where Damdeok and Sujini’s friendship started.
Episode 14 because Cheo Ro was introduced properly and I love all his scenes.
He’s so dreamy and “coldy”
Once again, The Legend is my all time favorite drama. I’ve loved it for 14 years now and I don’t think it’s going to church.

Ep 1 is good

Only first episode is worth watching, rest are time waste. I had big expectations after watching first episode. long time ago, a tribe that respected the tiger and controlled fire called the Ho-jok (Tiger Tribe), ruled the world. They eliminated and assimilated all tribes except the tribe that respected the bear, called the Ung-jok (Bear Tribe). The Tiger Tribe and the Bear Tribe fought, and Hwan-woong could not bear to see so many people getting killed. He brought the three gods of nature; Poong-Baek (백호, the White Tiger), Woonsa (청룡, the Azure Dragon), and Woosa (현무, the Turtle Snake).

He removed the power of fire from the leader of the Tiger Tribe, Kajin, sealed the power into an artifact called the Heart of Jujak (주작, the Vermilion Bird/Phoenix), and gave it to the woman he loved; Sae-oh. However, Kajin was mortally wounded while attacking another tribe, and she seemed to die until Hwan-woong healed her. This event makes Kajin develop love for Hwan-woong. When her tribe declared in a war council they would Hwan-woong take back the power of fire, Kajin then slew her tribe's elders with her own blade. She then escapes from her own tribe in search of Hwan-woong, deciding to become Hwan-woong's woman.

However, Hwan-woong likes Sae-oh and declared his love for her, not knowing that Kajin was watching them secretly when this took place. Kajin was infuriated by this and began reforming the Tiger Tribe and attacked the Bear Tribe. Unfortunately, this was the time when Sae-oh was pregnant, and when she had given birth, the baby was kidnapped by Kajin who offered Sae-oh a deal to trade her baby for the power of fire. When Sae-oh refuses Kajin, Kajin responds by dropping Sae-oh's baby from a cliff, leading to Sae-oh going out of control and releasing the Heuk-Jujak (Black Phoenix), even though Hwan-woong had saved the baby. (Note: Jujak is roughly the equivalent of Phoenix.) Hwan-woong's subordinates, the White Tiger, the Azure Dragon and the Turtle Snake fought the Black Phoenix, but they were no match for it.

Left with no choice, Hwan-woong used his Heavenly Bow to kill Sae-oh, the source of the power of the Black Phoenix, and managed to seal it once again in the heart of the Phoenix. Kajin committed suicide by jumping from the cliff because she now "had no reason to live in this world any more." Hwan-woong sealed the powers of the 'Four Gods' (The Phoenix, White Tiger, Azure Dragon, and the Turtle Snake) in certain artifacts and left them in the care of certain people, telling them that they will wake when the King of Jyushin is born.

Many centuries later, Damdeok, the reincarnation of Hwan-woong, was born. Along with him, the artifacts of the guardians of the King were born. Damdeok met difficulties in becoming the king of Goguryeo, mainly because of Yeon Hogae who mistook Damdeok for the murderer of his mother, and his father who turned the king's parliament against him.

If only they cared....

An okay first half followed by a significantly worse second half but that wasn't enough as it fumbled the landing even harder. The drama massively under-delivered on the ending and everything it was building up for 24 episodes. The most laughable aspect of the ending was the antagonist, he was shown as a powerful big threat just to be dealt with in the most comical way possible at the end. The fantasy elements were passable with nothing outrageous other than the messy introduction. I certainly don't miss Bae Yong Joon, kinda under-delivering on his role as the main protagonist. Meanwhile, Lee Ji Ah earlier carrier was much more interesting and enjoyable than her latest roles.
