Kdramas in 2020 never fail to amaze me. I've been holding out this one for long since I heard every episode will make you cry, as for me, make my heart clench. The drama is about a mother who dies before she could meet her baby but years after, she is given a chance to live as human again. Kim Tae-hee played Yu-ri well that every scene is either heart-wrenching or heart-warming. When you go through her journey of being human again - from denial to hate to acceptance - you also become wiser and go through an understanding that life will not always be riding your wave. It is the other way around. You need to live your days as if you were to say goodbyes. You need to accept that what you want does not equate to what is needed. The drama depicts sacrifice in such a wonderful way. I recommend this 100%. Get your tissues ready every episode!

Plot Problems

The most amazing, incredible piece of good luck that has ever happened to anyone anywhere occurs at the beginning of this series. A human being comes back from the dead!

Everyone is celebrating, hugging each other, and dancing in the streets. Right?

Nope.

Instead we are treated to crying, wailing, gnashing of teeth, and rending of garments (two sisters actually rend garments with a pair of scissors in one scene). Episode after episode after episode of misery and regret. As others have said, this series is slooooowww.

I've got an answer for you.

Product placement. Capitalism at its finest, folks. It's one long advertisement pummeling your unconscious brain.

But I digress. Back to the trauma and the drama...

If you've ever lost someone and want to revisit that aching sorrow at the unfairness of death-have a go at HI, BYE MAMA.

But wait! In the middle of this sob-fest, they, the producers, realized that this was all too much, so they sent two of the ladies zooming off in a hot car for an afternoon of ziplining. Then back to the never-ending tragedy of life.

Other viewers have criticized the feckless males and their total incompetence in the face of so much female grief. But I thought Lee Kyu-hyung rocked as the hapless, depressed husband who always does the wrong thing.

And then there's the repetitious dialogue. "I feel guilty." "I'm to blame." "No, you haven't done anything wrong." "I'm sorry." "I am so sorry." Sob, sob, sob. The point is not to have a logical plot. The point is to keep viewer's neurons susceptible to the main message.

Speaking of the plot: the holes are big enough to swallow the planet Jupiter, so I won't name them all-just a few. Why was that creepy exorcist out to kidnap little Seo-woo? Just to recruit her for Shaman school? Really, deities? What kind of a world are you running?

Is it really worse to see a few ghosts here and there, than it is to grow up without your "real" mother in your life?

As for Seo-woo, when the series opens she's four--but 49 days later (towards the end of Yuri's stint as a revivified human) Yuri says she's six. OK.

Then there's the episode where the three main characters attack another group of mothers at the preschool with paint and assorted objects. And no one gets expelled? And Yuri, the employee, doesn't get fired? I've worked at preschools and, generally speaking, they frown on employees who attack the parents.

Apparently Yuri doesn't care for shamans. But when you see that Mi Dong-daek has to justify the rules of the Big Bosses to the hoi polloi while corralling the chaos-I, at least, had sympathy. No wonder the deities are having a recruiting problem. Who wants to herd ghosts for a living?

Very much potential for variety, deepness and humor.

Hi Bye, Mama is one of those dramas that makes you dive right into her story.
It's about a woman who died in a car accident. She was pregnant and the baby was saved by the doctors.
She lives as a ghost on earth and watches her loved ones. She lives with other ghosts with whom she has made friends in an urn hall.
5 years after her accident, her husband remarried, her daughter thinks her stepmother is her biological mother and her parents have broken off all contact with the child. However, she knows that they all long for closeness. Due to a circumstance, Cha Yu-ri (FL) gets 49 days to take her place on earth. This means that she will become a full human being again when she marries her husband again and her child recognizes her as a mother.

That all being said we have a storyline which could have been surrounding the ghosts she lives with, the drama around her family (especially her mother), her husbands new wife, her husband and daughter and her friends, which are all there for her and missed her.
This was pretty much done in the first 7 episodes, maybe?

After a while, however, I was bothered by more things than I liked. For one, there was constant repetition of scenes (which is not unusual in dramas, but it was true very often), but that wasn't enough, because the same dialogues were also always repeated "I'm sorry", "I'm so glad", "I just love Son-woo so much, she's so pretty" are definitely the top 3 phrases of the series.
The acting was also mixed, but that was partly due to the script and director, since I've seen dramas with the actors and it wasn't that bad there.
Partly I could not understand the characters. Information was constantly hidden and things were not said. Most of the main characters spent most of their time looking stupid or crying. In addition, there was far too little questioning for me. If someone I knew came back from the dead I would really have a lot of questions. Also, there were too many plotholes. Especially concerning the days she has left and also concerning the ghosts. You are introduced to about 10 at the beginning, which have deeper storylines, but which are dropped to make room for repetition. During the series, Yuri promises to do something good for the ghosts, which she does 2 times and then has forgotten the things.

The Stroy had the potential to be funny, varied and dramatic at the same time. This was not used in that many characters and questionable things were simply forgotten. The last episodes just upset me.

Nevertheless, I often had to cry. My favorite character is the stepmother.

Heartbreaking Story. Have plenty of Kleenex Available.

All,

Powerful story of family, love, devotion. Brought many tears to my eyes and I am a tough guy!!!

I find myself hoping for a certain conclusion of the story. Hoping things will conclude a certain way by the final episode. Simply heartbreaking when it does not. Simply joyous when it does.

I was absolutely captivated by Kim Tae Hee's performance and was cheering her on throughout the story. Sometimes one finds themselves wishing they could insert themselves into the story and influence a direction our main characters should take. I have to remember, this is the way the story is written and its fiction. :)

This is one of the most heartwarming shows I have ever watched. The story, the cast, and the overall composition are perfect. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is so beautifully portrayed. It really shows us that family is one of the most important people in our lives and how we need to appreciate them.

"Hi Bye, Mama" without a doubt exceeded my expectations for how it ended. I am very glad that the writer gave this show a meaningful ending. It was associated with the show's name. I think the writers of Hi Bye Mama did a great job of making all of the viewers wonder what would happen next as we watched the show end.

Overall, I think this show did a good job of sticking to the meanings that have been portrayed in Korean dramas over time, which are very good, meaningful messages that the viewers can learn from.

Heavy Watch

you can guess from the title and the description of the kdrama that this will be a really hard watch. so much crying and heartbreak, you know how heartbreaking it can get when a kdrama involves a kid and a mother daughter relationship..

i started this couple of months ago but couldn’t finish because of how heavy everything was. every episode would have atleast 1 character cry in there and at some point it got a little boring and overbearing because it seemed to just circle in the same area which was grief and guilt. i understand that’s what the whole purpose of the show was but 1 hour 16 episodes ? yeah it is a bit too much..

towards the end the last couple of episodes were hard for me to finish because thats when you could tell that this is all just gonna be people crying and yelling at each other and each character slowly finding out that yuri is indeed gonna end up dying again, so at some point i didn’t even feel sad for the character because i’m like ‘alright we already went through this with this character…’ BUT… throughout all of that i must admit the last episode TUGGED on my heart.

i was honestly not expecting for yuri to actually end up dying in the end, i thought this kdrama was going to take the direction of being cliche and making her stay but it didn’t!

i’m not going to say i was happy with it because i actually felt sad that yuri couldn’t stay in the end, but also felt satisfied at the same time because that ending was the most ‘realistic’ and good for the show. i did shed a tear when she was saying goodbye to her daughter and the ending where they showed the dad and the step mother together kinda made me a little upset but it is for the best…

on a side note, the child actress reminded me so much of lee know from stray kids when he was a kid..am i the only one ?!

I could not give this a 10 rating as I wanted to, for one I didn't like how the ending ended! The storyline is what I did like but not the ending. Kim Tae Hee was excellent in this drama; I mean outstanding. This is my first time watching her act. I hope to see her in more dramas. At first, I thought she was the same actress that played the mermaid with Lee Min Ho in "The Legend of the Blue Sea". She is not but there is a similarity between the two actresses. Rain is my favorite singer/actor so I wanted to see his better half act. I was impressed.

I think it would be extremely hard for someone to lose a loved one and for them to come back just to say goodbye to those that didn't get that goodbye. I know I wouldn't want to go through the 2nd death of someone you love.

Since the 1 st epiode I knew what the ending would be but since I like my fair share of melodrama , I watched it . What really hooked me to this drama was the ACTING , definitely the story is good but the way the actors portayed the characters was flawless. They brought every character to life and made us empathize with them .Other than Lee Kyu hyung I wasn't a fan of any other actor but they all did a great job and carved a special place in my heart . Not just the main leads but every other single character was beautiful . Every person had their story and with those stories we learned so much about life , about death ,about love and loss , about guilt , grief and every emotion which makes us a human.
The grief was so poignant in the story , every single episode was so sad yet so heart warming . It told us about the harsh reality of death and fate and how we should accept the death and cherish all the good moments and store them in our memories and let go off the past.
In today's world where we all are running away from life and emotions , this drama truly makes us understand about the importance of our life - how our life impacts our family and our friends and how we need to get off the past to move forward and for ourself and for our loved ones?
Talking about the story , it did got a bit slow in certain episodes, I really wanted ganghwa to tell min jyeong about Yuri earlier , also I wanted to see all the other character's story a bit more and learn about their closure , how they bid good bye to their families . Nonetheless every drama has some flaws.
The ost's were amazing specially - In the night : Park jae Jung ?and Time like a shining star: Jimin park ?.
I loved Yuri the most , she's one of my favorie drama characters and she'll always be in my heart ?

Excellent story with amazing message

I'll just simply keep this review short.

This show is amazing. It had everything from comedy to romance to sad scenes. The actors in this show were amazing, especially the female lead and the other ghosts, and there were numerous episodes where I cried.

I simply loved this show because it was so good even if you didn't want to follow the story of her trying to get her life back. Each episode had a story itself I felt as if that entire episode could make an entirely different show, while at the same time it was still clearly part of this show.

However, the reason I rated this lower than a 10 is the ending. It felt so rushed. Others will preach the entire show for being just a great message, and they are not wrong. I too feel this show had a great message, but what separates me from others is I do not feel like kdramas should be realistic. That's why I hated this show, because I felt it was so realistic. It was an ending that put a sour taste in my mouth.

This is definitely not a show for somebody who expects a good ending for the characters. The show was great, and is probably unconditionally an excellent show for anybody to watch, it's just.. in the same boat as "Mr. Queen" for those who know.

This show could be rewatched numerous times for those who truly do appreciate the message. There is no lack of plot, story, etc. in this show. It was practically perfect.

this drama for people who love sad and meaningful dramas that will make you cry from the start to the end with some good laugh in between but will also give you big love energy and trust in people because every character is good character like what beautiful world is this?!! when you just meet good people on your life .. Yuri life was short but she meet amazing people.. life always short you will always have something to regret about that's why i love this drama show that in the end you nee to get over your regret for the better.

i loved how every character is selfless from yuri to ganghwa and to everyone surprise the new wife, how beautiful Minjung character this change the image of step mom and make us want her to have happy ending and how they focus on the feeling of the wife that take on responsibility to fix a broken house and really love this family and try to hug their pain and how Yuri love her for that... and that what i love the most about the drama they showed everyone view in a good way.

"Whether you’re alive or dead, life is always about parting. You have to say goodbye to meet again.” this drama is about accepting good bye and i love it healing take time but we all need to accept it in the end

acting was amazing let's tell you that's Kim Tae Hee best role honestly before this drama i saw that she only pretty face but she showed amazing acting in this drama... Lee Kyu Hyung what should i say? even amazing not enough for him every time he cry i cry , Jo Gang Hwa character was the most heart breaking character i follow in long time and kyuhyung made me feel him and believe in him.

over all it was really good drama for those who love soft drama and ready to cry

Makes you reflect on life and love one's.

I'm not usually in my feelings but this one was a tearjerker... the main character "Yu Ri" is the mother ghost that basically has a second chance and throughout her journey in each episode teaches you life lessons which made me teary eyed or drop a few tears.

I didn't want to spoil anything for anybody so...................................................................................
