A Love Story That Isn't for Everyone

I have been wanting to watch this movie since I first watched the trailer and had "No Regrets" by Li Rong Hao on repeat for over a month. I knew this was a movie that would make me cry. I don't think this movie is for everyone, when it's a love story that isn't for everyone; especially people that doesn't like very flawed characters and that not all love will have a happy ending.

Zhou Xiao Qi is our male lead that is super rash and emotional throughout the movie, while You Yong Ci (our female lead) was a girl that wanted to simply feel loved and safe in a relationship due to her past family issues. I honestly felt like female lead's character was not fleshed out well compared to the male lead's character, but I think the main focus of the story was on Zhou Xiao Qi. They are both very flawed characters though. The moment Zhou Xiao Qi did the stupid thing that ruined his future, I knew their relationship would fail no matter what. There would always be regrets for him, and then for Yong Ci will forever feel guilty for it. No matter how much they loved each other, it would just not work out.

I think the message that the movie wants to tell us is that just because you love each other, doesn't mean you have to end up together. It gave a realistic view on how when you are young, rash and emotional; you make stupid mistakes and say stupid things that can make or break a relationship. But it's important to look back and cherish the love you had for each other in the past. We should view it as a happy memory; it's better to have loved and been loved, then to not have loved and not been loved Also, it's important to live with the decisions you made and to not have regrets. Keep looking forward, learn from your mistakes and try to become a better person.

Beautiful and real

To be honest most of this movie deserves a 7 or an 8 at most, some parts are just too predictable and you kind of get the feel of weightlifting fairy meets allot like love (but not in a good way) and yes you will find yourself screaming come on... no don't go there... wtf are you doing??? But then midway the realism breaks the predictable pattern and we are brought in to a story of struggle, regret, dealing with pain and some pretty deep issues. When are we good for each other, when should we let go and can we find our way back or is it better to move on? Is love enough? Being a movie and not a drama this is kind of rushed, I think this could make one h*** of a drama if prolonged but since it is a movie they did convey the important parts pretty well.

What got to me and that kicked up the score from an 8,5 midway to a 9,5 was the beautifully made emotional ending that i hope will touch you just as much as it touched me. But I will not spoil it for you just tell you that it is beautiful, what makes it beautiful is for me to know and for you to find out . if you do chose to watch this please tell me what you think of the ending (just don't forget the spoiler tag).

Superb acting but rushed final act!

Plus/minus:
(+) In the first few acts, the story is fleshed out nicely to show Xiao Qi's sacrifices to win over Young Ci.
(+) After the love is reciprocated between the two, the narrative shifting toward Young Ci's angle is also great.
(-) The scenes that led to the final break-up were rushed. It doesn't fit Young Ci's character to make the final decision over two scenes. The letter that she wrote and narrated did help sustain her PoV, but more scenes of arguments/discussions would have given much more weight to the break-up scenes.

Takeaway:
1. The absence of noticing mental health and therapy is again apparent in such love-themed movies to drive the plot. Not entirely sure how accurate it is with the reality in China, but the movie focused more on improving Xiao Qi's physical health after the incident. In contrast, his mental health was largely ignored despite having apparent effects on his surroundings. Young Ci also chose less desirable actions despite wanting to help Xiao Qi's mental health issue.
2. Greg Hsu and Zhang Ruo Nan are perfect for this show. It was a treat, and I look forward to their other projects.

Most realistic love story

Hmm, how do i start….. I clicked on this movie when i already know the ending so throughout the movie i cried every times there’s a sweet moment between them.
I read a lot of review of this movie before i decided to write one on my own, since most review saying they felt bad for the male lead or female lead doesn’t deserved male lead blah blah blah. (I dont mean ur opinion is wrong but i just see thing differently. Dont come at mee ?)But to me i can understand why female lead chose to leave him. Firstly, she is a person who lacking of security feeling becuz of her dad and the male lead is also know about that. Secondly, regarding the male lead accident, more or less it’s becuz of female lead so even if they are together, I believe she still has the guilt deep down in her heart. And the moment she overheard male lead saying the word regret she know for sure from that time on she lost her secure feeling in their relationship and as much as she doesn’t want it, they still have no choice but to break up. To normal person, a word “regret” from male lead might sound normal or people think he didn’t mean it but to female lead, she knows for sure that even if they love each other so much, their relationship will not work out. Plus I believe that if they still continue that relationship, the male lead silently feeling “regret” while female lead silently feeling “guilty” and to both of them this isn’t a healthy relationship so it lead to breaking up make so much sense.
One more thing is i also see people saying how could female lead moving on so easily, how could she has a boyfriend, remember when the male lead inspired her to chase back her dream…. Just to clarify the movie we all watched was just from the male lead perspective so we don’t really know what the female lead been through when there wasn’t male lead so we can’t assume she moves on that easy. (I mean if there’s an extra clip talking about the female lead perspective that would be so much better)
Tbh, although the ending was heartbroken but i have to say it’s a really beautiful ending for both of them. I love the quote where the male lead said “i’ve seen your happy face, sad face, now lemme see the face that forever will not belong to me” i cried my eyeballs out at that scene. To both of the their 15years relationship will forever be cherished in their memory. And i love this.

happy sad ending

From the synopsis you already know this one will gonna be 'sad ending' for both our main lead. But the journey toward the ending is so real & kinda sad but still beautiful. But in the end this is still a happy ending for our couple.

Yeah their love story is so real & deep. Especially their break up story it's really so deep & real. What you consider light word is sometimes cut deeply into someone heart & more hurtful than a mouthful full of sharp words, especially if that said by someone important for us. Sometimes other drama the word like that doesn't consider as something as important as in here & not become the reason to break up or maybe gonna make them fight but still get back together at the end because love & everything else more important than the 'light' word.

Actually even Zhou Xiao Qi (XQ) doesn't said it. I'll gonna wonder is the fact that XQ never ever regret about the accident. Even though we still can see how happy they are together. But the fact still hanging in the air just wait to drop like a bomb...

I also really like when You Yong Ci (YC) dare to admit that she is a women that never feel safe. & it's really cut deep when XQ the one she put the trust wholeheartedly hurt her just like that. If that me, yeah I also can't possibly jump over that word & just forget & forgive everything. I also will gonna make the same decision with her.

In the end just like XQ word: "In the end don't know which one is worse, never have it or ever have but lose it."

love makes you do stupid things

i was thinking "he screwed up" like every 20 min, but also love, you know?

the bad:
some of the details make this movie so cringey (her name, for one). i know it's supposed to be a romance movie, but the male lead makes several questionable decisions: giving up the swim championship match was just... maybe it's just because i can't think about this movie from a truly romance perspective and am too realistic, but isn't this movie supposed to be realistic? also, who invites their ex who they have a very deep history with to their wedding? i know it sets up for the end, but it feels weird. zhang ruonan's acting also feels a bit lacking; i don't think she's horrible, just average, but when acting across from greg han, the difference is more evident.

the good:
as a romance movie, cute scenes are a must, and there are plenty. my personal favorites include the fireworks scene, the fireworks scene, and the fireworks scene. but this movie is surprisingly deep. it's about how fate sometimes seems to just not be in your favor and how you can't control everything; it's about letting go of things, love and otherwise; it's about learning how there are two sides to everything and how feelings aren't games you can win or lose. i liked how the characters really did mature over time. the wedding scene at the end was beautiful. not having watched the Korean version, i was still able to predict that the ending would not result in them getting together; however, i could not predict how touching his speech was at the end. sometimes you just need to let go.

i think it'd be really interesting to see the movie from you young ci's POV - i can only dream about that.

Mismatched couple who mature...too late!

I personally would like to see kids in Junior/Senior High to watch this in class and talk about it...

The cinematography and support actors/actresses did a good job filling in the spaces but not taking focus off of the couple in question.

The movie shows two immature teenagers (Zhou Xiao Qi aka Greg Hsu and You Yong Ci
aka Zhang Ruo Nan)), the male reckless and the female insecure, cross-matched and continually losing each other.

Her requesting him not to fight anymore shows she wanted him to be around for her; and not in and out of her life. He was awestruck with puppy love grew a little more mature when he agreed not to fight anymore (but at the time, he didn't know this!)...

A drunken father finding his wife and her his daughter, forced her and her mother on another move, something that the young girl grew tired of, but I thought it was caring of her to tell him to leave while the crowd watched her clean up the broken glass; she knew in her heart that her stability with another move was threatened. I felt that she was thinking of him at this time.

He gained the impetus to go to college, seeing her photograph on pictures of university life; but alas, she is already dating someone else and another separation ensues when he forces the soccer star to reveal his two-timing promise that he made to two separate women!

Again, as a swimming star, they meet again, and an injury forces him to give up his main goal in life....what is funny, nothing would have happened had he swam the race!

Fast forward to two lovebirds finally living together, with a reality check when his injuries prevent his stardom and large endorsements. I personally think had he not been so worried about his athletic injuries and taken a stable low-paying job, the ending would have been totally different. You Yong Ci unfortunately hears his lamenting about meeting her in a conversation with his friend, which brings back all her insecurities and seeing him as her father who was never there for her. Last separation...

The loss of You Yong Ci and the fact that he had to get a stable job to pay the rent taught him many lessons about his past and gave him the the ability to mature...but too late for reuniting with his former over.

The meeting with You Yong Ci on her wedding day shows how much more mature BOTH parties were.

You Yong Ci laughs when he says he is a master thief, and thanks him for coming to her wedding; both appear to be at ease, even though they broke up a few years ago...she is smiling while they talk.

His statements he made to her shows the maturity he gained having a low-paying but steady job as he had to deal with other kids like him in high school:

"You look wonderful in your wedding dress"

"I used to be a fool...worrying over the future...while wasting the present."

"You're more mature" (what he is saying to me, is that HE is more mature)"

"But today, I want no more regrets"

"But when you called me by my name...then in a fleeting moment...then I was back when I was seventeen."

All these statements - to me - show that he will be ready to have another lasting relationship in the future, but not with You Yong Ci ...I believe that the character of You Yong Ci realizes he finally gained the maturity to have a meaningful relationship..., but not with her.

The supporting actors did a fantastic job as well, and I would recommend this movie, especially to youthful couples...what wasn't said in the movie was that the individual must die as any couple matures.

your typical coming of age melodrama

I mainly watched this movie because Hsu Kuang-han and he did so wonderfully in "Someday or One Day" which has kind of the same vibes. Both actors did extremely well, there weren't any parts that felt off or cringey at all, and the way they expressed their emotions fit their characters 10/10. However, in terms of this moving being particularly memorable or moving,...it's hard to say that it was. This is certainly worth watching however I've watched way too many coming of age and youth content, and judging from the ones I've watched(ranging from unmemorable to really good), this is definitely mediocre.

This movie leans more towards the realistic side, so it's surprising yet predictable. Surprising that they don't follow the cliche route where the main leads have the easy way out and solve all their relationship issues.

I appreciate the ost and the cinematography during those parts. I'd give it a 10/10. So happy they included 童话and the main ost sung by Eric Chou :) I think my favorite part is when ML sets off fireworks at the campus residential building and then everyone crowds around to see and they're all singing and waving their phone lights (super aesthetic)

Overall, this movie was pretty lighthearted and it was a good watch. Not super emotional or moving (until near the end when both characters, esp the ML, matures), but I'd say give it a shot :)

She met him to bringout the best in him

I wonder what it would be really like if Zhou Xiaoqi actually never met You Yongci. Probably he would never become a teacher and not aims to become a better swimmer either. The FL however was not that likeable, the way she rejected him and never ever valued his love in a true manner, she was his crush and that was the reason why even after so much rejection he still went after her but if we see through into her character more deeply and the place from where she was coming from was pretty dark! She had her own baggage along with her so it was really hard for her to realize the good intentions at that point maybe when they were in highschool. I still wishes that they might have ended up together. ?

It could be a better ending... I get this point that the movie is trying to deliver this message that nobody can be with us forever. Some people leave their footsteps on our heart during this journey of life and we meet them again and again only to get separated one day. They are just not for us. We give all our best to keep them into our life longer, however they leave because their time with us is over. They have only came to our life to take us to some destination... that certain point of life where we can't go on our own!

a love story somewhere in between lighthearted and deep

To be honest, after watching the trailor, I've been expecting this movie to be more deep and more heartwrecking as it actually was. The problem: Putting 15 years (!!) of story into 2 hours doesn't allow you to go into depth. That's why I wish this was a drama instead of a movie.

But, I guess that was my only problem with this. The story had its deepness, but it just felt rushed, I always felt like we were jumping through all these different years and different stages of a relationship. I really missed the "giving us something to remember" thing that makes movies for me more outstanding and special.

What I really need to mention: FL's crying scenes. Hands down, I think those were the best crying scenes I've ever seen from any actor/actress anywhere. My heart shattered when she cried, and I'm not even such an emotional person... :(
Also: Many touching scenes without being too dramatic. Saying more would be a spoiler, but many scenes were just beautiful, mainly protrayed by the cinematography.

So: Not 2 hours to regret, a movie that's neither lighthearted nor heartwrecking. A little plus: Li RongHao's ending theme song and the song "Tong Hua" they included in one of my favorite scenes.

there is no bond like first love❤

from the start only i started seeing the red flags in main lead he was a very flawed character like that guy did the same thing that female lead ex did he tried to kiss fl when he was in a relationship uhmmm if thats not enough..guy literally was being a creep when took admission in university for his first love...and last but not least he words he said when he was in his lowest and blamed it on fl was pathetic...i was annoyed by the ml so much but then i got it what the movie wanted to interpret...we do stupid things in our youth,we all think that we will endup with our first crush and wil be happy forever , we are silly and young and does not worry about future, nothing is forever everything is momentary and its not even a bad thing, some people come our life to teach or lead us a lesson that one person can change our entire life...instead having hatered we should cherish the moment we spent with that person ❤
atlast i would say i like how realistic it was..i would say wont like to rewatch it its a one time watch movie coz there is nothing but reality :)
