Unique, Quirky, and GOOD!!

I had to write a review for this one as it will probably be under rated and it is worth its weight in gold so far. This cdrama stands out with it's unique storyline that has a dark whimsical vibe to it. It engages the viewer with each case that ties into the overall mystery between the ML and FL. The high quality of the cinematography and production value makes it seem more like a movie. I liked how they had different actors and actresses take on more lead like roles in each case story, the acting is well done and kudos for giving screen time to them. There is also dark humor sprinkled throughout the episodes that was done pretty well. There are some plot holes as it's in the mystery fantasy genre but it was acceptable to me as the good far outweighed the bad.

The series is compact by Cdrama standards at 12 episodes, it seems to eliminate the long drag out meandering storylines that plague some of the CDramas with lots of episodes. I hope the CDrama industry will continue to take more risks in investing in unique and unconventional dramas like this.

Such a Thrilling Mystery Drama

From start to finish it story was brilliant. It's a well planed and very very eye catching drama. The visuals? Absolutely eye-catching. The colors, the vibes—it was all crazy. iQiyi really outdid themselves, crafting a show that’s gonna be remembered forever. The story hit that sweet spot with just the right mix of thrill and romance.
Now, let’s talk about Angelababy. She really outdid herself with this one. Sure, she was “sleeping” for most of it, but when she was on screen? She delivered. Honestly, I prefer her acting here over her 2025 drama EL.
And the pacing? Wild. A new story almost every two episodes? That’s next-level. CiCi Wang—I gotta say, she turned me into a fan real quick with her role as a supporting character. She owned it. WAY, he was serving the entire time. His face card? Never declines. This drama? Unforgettable.

Loved every millisecond of it ! One of the best series of 2025 for me <3

Both were born into two different timelines but still found a way of saving each other & ending up together - how romantic! Isn't it? Surprised & disappointed at the same time that this masterpiece doesn't have much recognition. I watched Wang Anyu & Angelababy's performance for the first time & they both were amazing. Unique storyline & execution, solid acting from the cast & chemistry between FL & ML, nice pacing, great twists everything made this series pleasurable to watch. Wanted more of them actually :)

A Republican-Era Journey Through Crime, Mystery & Comic-Book Magic

What drew me into Back for You was the Republican-era setting. A Republican-era drama that wasn't going to give me the usual angst-filled revenge and love-hate story? I was immediately in. And thankfully, it did not disappoint.

The setting and costumes were beautiful, and the whole drama had this dark, whimsical, almost comic-book-like atmosphere that made it visually stand out. The colours, production design, and cinematography were genuinely eye-catching. I especially loved the comic-style sequences. I only wish we could actually see more of those comics because the artwork looked so interesting!

The biggest strength of the drama for me was definitely its unique format. It's only 12 episodes, and almost every episode gives us a new case. A mysterious, initially blank comic begins drawing out stories based on real crimes, but with a strange supernatural/fantastical twist. The ML, who is a detective, has to interpret the clues from these bizarre comic stories and figure out what actually happened in the real world.

I really enjoyed this concept. It kept the drama moving at a fast pace because there was always a new case to uncover. Some cases were definitely stronger than others, but I was rarely bored. The individual stories ranged from crime and psychological dilemmas to supernatural situations, shifting identities, morally complicated choices, and even love that crosses time. Each story had its own atmosphere while slowly contributing to the bigger mystery.

And this is where I think people should adjust their expectations before watching it.

The ML and FL are not really the centre of the drama for most of it. If you're coming specifically because of the cast or expecting a romance-heavy story, you might be disappointed. The ML is primarily there as the detective investigating the crimes, while the FL is mostly bedridden until around episode 8. Their actual story together only becomes important later, and even then, the romance is extremely limited.

In fact, we basically have to wait until the very last episode for the romance.

But honestly? I didn't mind as much as I thought I would because I was so invested in the cases and the overall mystery. And when the ML and FL's story finally starts to come together, their interactions are actually really cute. I just wish we had gotten more of them together because there was so little time left.

I also liked how the drama gradually reveals that these seemingly disconnected cases aren't actually random. What initially feels like an anthology of strange crime stories slowly starts connecting to the larger mystery surrounding the ML and FL. That structure made me curious about where everything was going, and the eventual payoff was satisfying.

The cast also did a good job, particularly considering how much the format changes from episode to episode. Different actors get the opportunity to take on almost lead-like roles in individual cases, and I appreciated that the drama actually gave those characters enough space to make their stories matter.

That said, people coming primarily for the main cast might be disappointed by their limited screen time. This really isn't a conventional lead-driven drama.

I also really liked the darker humour sprinkled throughout. It somehow worked with the strange, surreal atmosphere rather than taking away from the seriousness of the cases. The whole drama has this quirky, slightly unsettling quality that made it feel different from the usual Republican-era dramas.

Visually, though, this drama is probably one of the things I enjoyed the most. It genuinely feels like watching a comic book come to life. The bold colours, unusual imagery, costumes, sets, and cinematic framing give it a very distinctive identity. At times, it almost felt more like a collection of short films than a conventional C-drama.

Of course, it isn't perfect. There are some plot holes and moments where the logic of the fantasy/mystery elements doesn't completely hold together. But for me, the creativity, pacing, atmosphere, and overall execution outweighed those flaws.

I also want to mention that this drama gets quite dark, especially in some of the cases. There are scenes involving violence, blood, sexual assault, attempted assault, and multiple non-explicit rape references/scenes, with particularly difficult material around episodes 8 and 11. So definitely check the trigger warnings before watching.

Overall, Back for You was such a pleasant surprise. I went in for the Republican-era setting and the promise of something different, and what I got was a fast-paced, visually beautiful, darkly whimsical mystery with a really creative concept.

It isn't the romance drama. It's much more of a crime/mystery anthology with supernatural and time-travel elements, where the romance is almost an afterthought.

But somehow, that worked for me.

From beginning to end, I was invested in finding out what each case was about and how everything connected. Some arcs were better than others, but the drama never lost my interest.

A short, quirky, visually gorgeous mystery that feels like a comic book brought to life. I only wish it had given us more of the ML and FL's story because that tiny bit of romance at the end had me wanting an entire drama about them.

Excellent mystery/thriller series, innovative and inventive

An isekai/TT series starring the duo Angelababy and Wang An Yu.

PLOT: FL, a manga artist in 1946, was saved as a child by a policeman carrying a lighter. This lighter one day sends her to the aid of the ML from her manga (an undercover policeman in 1926). In saving him, she falls into a coma, and the ML realizes that the comics in her bag, are connected to the cold cases he's working on. He manages to solve them, first alone, then with FL's help.

+++ Dynamic direction, with no dull moments, constant suspense, and an intriguing storyline. The interweaving of manga drawings, 1926 sequences, and comic book sequences, is very innovative and creative. The budget allowed for the realistic recreation of sets, costumes, hairstyles, and props. There is clearly a great deal of attention to detail.
+++ The whole drama is brought to life on screen by Wang An Yu and Angelababy, as well as some great actors [who only appear in one episode].
+++ The tone is quite dark, with many night scenes and red lighting.
+++ The OSTs perfectly complement the atmosphere.

### Up until episode 9, Angelababy ヽ(♡‿♡)ノ plays a comatose character, so she doesn't have much screen time in this part.

=> Excellent mystery/thriller series, innovative and inventive.

+++ Les OSTs s'accordent bien à l'atmosphère.

### Jusqu'à l'épisode 9, Angelababy ヽ(♡‿♡)ノa un rôle de comateuse, on ne la voit donc pas bcp jouer ds cette série.

=> Excellente série Mystère / thriller, novatrice et inventive.

A Beautifully Woven Tapestry of Comic Book Stories

This 12-episode short drama unfolds like a collection of interconnected comic book stories, each chapter presenting a new, gripping scenario while subtly building toward a larger mystery.

The series begins with A Lai, whose life changes after a chance encounter with a mysterious woman. From there, each episode explores a different, self-contained story — ranging from surreal and supernatural concepts to crime, psychological dilemmas, love that defies time, shifting identities, and morally complex choices. Every chapter stands strongly on its own, blending suspense, emotion, and poetic storytelling.

As the series progresses, the threads between these stories gradually reveal a deeper thematic connection. What initially feels like an anthology slowly forms a cohesive narrative tapestry, leading to a powerful and satisfying conclusion.

This is a unique and beautifully executed short drama — creative, atmospheric, and thoughtfully structured. I would love to see more series like this.

BEST CDRAMA OF 2025 So Far

First of all, why are the ratings so low?
From The production, the sequence, the storyline, everything was just perfect. I finished all the episodes in 1 day. Every episode has somewhat a different story and leads but is somehow connected to the whole storyline. Angelababy & Wang Anyu's Chemistry was great and 12 episodes were perfect, not too rushed but I wished the ending was a bit longer.

Very unique

Hmmm what a bizarre drama right? I am struggling to rate it just because it's so unique!
First of all people might be tricked into thinking the main leads are the center of this dramas and well most of the drama is centered about the crime stories that the comic shows, the ml is there to investigate and arrest the criminals at the end of the episode and the FL is..well bed ridden up to ep 8. How it works is like this the comic that I have mentioned how is initially blank will start having the drawing of the crime, they are very closely inspired by the real crimes but they are twisted in a world of fantasy so the story plays in full then the detective (ml) has to get the hints from the comic and find the actual facts of the crime. After ep 8 tho the ml and fl story starts and it's so cuuuute (romance only on the very last episode tho 😭) nevertheless I highly enjoyed it. Some arcs are better than others but overall I was always invested plus pls be aware of these trigger warnings : violence, blood, non explicit multiple rape scenes and attempted assault especially ep 8 and 11. Overall 9 out of ten

Love every seconds of this drama!

I didn’t have high expectations before start watching this drama. However, once I started I can’t stop. Once you watch it pass the scene when FL was shot, everything after that becomes much much more interesting.

This drama consists of each cases per episode and it’s so good, quirky and engaging. I love their comic art as well. Bold colors (wish I had a chance to read those comics for real not only a quick glance through the scene)

My most favorites episodes are the ones about a bakery shop and the sci-fi guy one. If you finished watching this, let me know which case is your fav!

REPUBLICAN ERA WITH TIME TRAVELING STORY

Good plot. Great story.
This is the first time travel drama in republican era.
One thing that caught me most in this drama is Wang An Yu and Angelababy's acting. I never thought they'd be a good pair.
I watched Baby in Forever Longing and i got disapointed ny her acting. In this drama however i have to admit i love her chemistry with Wang An Yu.
Wang An Yu.. i know he's been a good actor with good acting. And once again he did great in action scenes. I thought the pairing would look awkward considering his age gap with Baby. I'm happy it didnt happen. He shows his capability as an actor.

Although in some fighting scene, the camera is shaking and it made me dizzy, but overall this drama is worth watching.
