A Romance that truly resonates
Not sure if this is an unpopular comment, but I actually like Shadow Love more than Legend of Female General. The male lead’s character here has more depth and emotion, and the overall story feels smoother with fewer plot holes. I also loved how the romance blends naturally with the fantasy and political intrigue, while Li Shuang as the female general comes across as strong yet still human and relatable. The production is gorgeous too — the costumes, sets, and atmosphere really pulled me in.The chemistry between the leads felt genuine, and the way their relationship developed made me care deeply about their struggles and heartbreak. It’s not a light or fluffy romance, but that’s exactly what made it memorable for me. Shadow Love might not be perfect, but it definitely left me with a stronger impression and more emotions to hold onto.

The CHEMISTRY takes the spotlight! Prince turned superhero bound to enemy female general
My high rating is mostly for the romance between our leads. When I saw this pairing I wasn't expecting these two to have such great chemistry. Every time they hold hands, every loving glance, every hug just oozed sweetness.Cheng Lei was decent in The Female General but he finally won me over as Jin'an. I found this character to be a lot more enjoyable and Cheng Lei did a great job making Jin'an as animated and charismatic as he was. I think it took me seeing him in a role where he had to shift between personas to realize his talent. In My Journey to You his character was morally gray, serious, and pretty boring. But Jin'an was just perfection.
Song Yi, this pretty alien, was never my favorite but I found her tolerable before as long as she wasn't crying. I had my doubts about being able to see her as a fierce general but she put her own spin on the character and I wound up liking her. Her character was elegant and noble but what I loved most was how straightforward she was. When she loved, she loved hard and gave her whole heart to Jin'an. But when things took a turn for the worse, although she was sad to lose him, she never allowed herself to become completely lovesick and lose focus of what's really important. But there are still limits to what Song Yi can do. She never came off as truly intimidating because of that sweet voice lol All of her outfits were beautiful though!
Guan Hong is my 2nd highlight after the main CP. Mo Yin was perfect to me. He's always such a cutie and so mesmerizing when he's on screen. I didn't need to see a full blown love story between him and Lu Xin but she grew on me by the end and their scenes became fun to watch.
The OST! I loved it. Almost every song in still stuck in my head but the LYN song was the best. The CGI and overall cinematography was mediocre but then still over the top at times. Not enough to ruin it for me because I normally have low expectations in that department anyway.
I definitely liked more than I disliked with this drama. I found the ending theme really touching when Jin'an basically expresses that his heart will always remember her and he will always uncontrollably fall in love with her even if his mind forgets her. Their bond was really sweet to watch. You just have to get through the middle, which kind of drags because it's a bunch of plotless episodes where our CP is just bonding. But once the drama comes back from its walk in the park, the last 10 eps are very enjoyable. I can overlook the silly villains as well because they never get that much screen time or cause too much trouble. I'm also a nerd for anything superhero so I did wish that there were a few more of those scenes but I'll take what I got. I would definitely watch this again for the romance and for the last arc.

What an amazing ride
This is a really good drama divided in 2 parts.Just like GOT if you can manage through first 10eps you will not be disappointed.
The first half is plain boring. I have a review somewhere in this thread saying I might drop this. But will stay mostly because of the ML. YES! HE iS HOT but is also an amazing actor. The FL has also done a good job but the role and acting she had to do for the first half did not feel convincing. Second however was right up her Ally, which is where it becomes super interesting too.
I think for me personally the drama became absolutely to obsess about from ep 30 onwards.
I will say that the story is divided in 2 parts. 1-29ep and then 30-38ep.
I know I will definitely be re-watching later half of this drama from time to time. It's just that good. I think the FL finally got the role to play that actually suited her best in the later half.
TLDR
30 ep onwards it's amazing. You can actually watch it directly from there and not miss too much context if you ve watched multiple chinese dramas.

Went Beyond my Expectation
During a battle between Yao Kingdom and Taijin, General Li Shuang was separated from her troops and pursued by Yao forces. Injured and bloodied by the battle, FL was encircled and left with no way to run, when suddenly a sudden force from her feet surged outward, pushing back her pursuers. A kid plopped in front of her, and went to fight off Yao troops and helped her escape. Having no memories, riddled with injuries and no clue on his background, Li Shuang took him into her camp and gave him a name, Jin An. Little did she know the kid was actually a product of a botched witchcraft placed on Prince Annan, Duan Aodeng, the commander of Yao army, which transformed him into a fighter with supernatural strength and abilities with side effect of memory loss and his adult body turned into a child. And because Li Shuang’s blood had dripped into his mouth when he laid on the ground after escaping the wizard’s cave, a blood oath had been forged between them, which tied their fates together for a lifetime.Ryan Cheng has proven himself yet again as Duan Aodeng/Jin An. I have seen 3 of Ryan Cheng’s dramas so far, and one thing i noticed is that, he stripped and goes off bare chested in all of them 😆 But this is definitely the first drama that i saw him acting cheeky and carefree. In other dramas that I’ve seen, he had always taken the cold and aloof kind of roles, where it’s always the girl who chases after him. This is a new look on him, where he’s the one fawning over the girl, indulging her to ridiculous extent while being coy and sulky. This definitely casts a different light on him and he acted out the role immaculately perfect. That being said, his character as Prince Annan is of course much more interesting and injects more depth compared to the lovesick puppy Jin An. Although I didnt like how badly he treated FL during their first meeting, it is unavoidable as they were ultimately two generals of opposing kingdoms.
Although generally Song Yi is fine as Li Shuang, personally i felt she was too physically scrawny for the role. In reality, it is literally impossible for somebody who trains daily and fight battles for years not to develop somekind of muscle. I had served in the Navy before and even though i am small in stature even for a woman, even the skinniest of us would still develop some muscle. Muscle is literally a side effect of those heavy workout, and yet I just saw skin and bones on Song Yi, much like those noble young ladies who does nothing all day long but play music, recite poems or embroider. It’s just not convincing enough. And her shrieking voice when she commands the troops makes it worse. The way she wields weapons is also not really convincing, maybe due to fact that she was just too skinny to look formidable in the battlefield. But other than this physical shortcoming, her depiction of Li Shuang is somewhat acceptable. Song Yi’s Li Shuang might not have been among the best female generals out there, but she is borderly acceptable. She exudes the air of resolution and bravery, and that is what the novel’s Li Shuang is all about. I like that the show manage to add more personality to Li Shuang compared to the novel, being short as it is. Although, I still cringe when she acted cheesy around Jin An, like she turned to be a whole different person than that general who leads troops on the battlefield.
The SML Crown Prince turned out to be quite a surprise. They actually decided to turn him into a shady character from the upright and honest novel’s Crown Prince. I guess it is necessary for the sake of the plot. The actor basically played the very same character he took up on Kill Me Love Me, so he’s definitely done this rodeo hence it is quite hard to be bad at it.
And by the way, i am totally loving FL’s sidekick Liu Xin played by Shi Ce. This character used to be a common physician before she was called to treat FL’s battle wounds and later became the army physician. She kinda became best friends with FL ever since. I really like that she was the kind of girl who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, confess when she likes someone and take a step back when she is rejected. It’s like a modern, sensible girl in an ancient body. Her cheeky, innocent demeanor is the comic relief in this show.
The fighting sequence here is very good. Duan Aodeng’s sequences are formidable and fierce, while Jin An exudes mystery and darkness with excellent seamless CGI. Only one thing doesnt sit right by me - a general using bow and arrows as her main weapon is honestly extremely unrealistic. Bow and arrows are naturally not feasible for close combat, especially when the arrows are very limited. i literally laugh when i saw FL flipping left and right shooting out those arrows in most of her hands-on fights. Like seriously? 🙄 Dear screenwriters, please get real. There’s a reason why generals use swords or spears or any other inexhaustible short range tools as their main weapon on the battlefield, and it’s definitely not just for show.
Except for Song Yi who shouldve spent more effort developing some muscles and strength and screenwriter’s unrealistic choice of having FL use bow and arrow as main weapon, everything else is picture perfect, though i do feel that the romance had been too cheesy. In the novel, there had not been many romantic moment between the main leads cuz it was always only the ML obsessed over FL due to the blood oath, while the FL had always been suspicious of him even though she did feel indebted to him for his many rescues of her and her troops. Guess they changed this so the show wouldnt be too bland and short.
And i like the fact that they made ML’s transformation sound ‘sci-fi’ish, when the original idea had been more to sorcery. At least it’s more bearable with the futuristic sounding than sombre eerie music.
The songs are really nice, some slow and endearing while some catchy and groovy. The set and costume are convincing and nice to look at.
I like how they expanded the plot from a 49ch novel. Some can be boring, but most are enjoyable, the pairings of side couples are real cute and heartwarming. It’s definitely one of the good adaptations put there, following the novel’s main plot closely without planting much holes on its sideplots. Very brilliantly executed with such limited source from a short novel.

Great story BUT HORRENDOUS pacing
The pace of this drama was horrendous. From a strong start to the most boring middle and a very strong finish... You really have to be a fan of Cheng Lei (or other actors) to stick to it without dropping it in the middle.This being said the cinematography, color palette, light, and photography was top notch. The whole drama was gorgeous served by very strong performances by the main cast. The story was great too, although the 2ML did raise my blood pressure quite a bit at some point.
Apart from the pace my biggest complain, which is more personal taste than anything, is that I wished we had spent more time with Prince Annan than with Jin An. Dark and brooding Cheng Lei is the best🥵🥵🥵
The biggest plot-hole remains Cheng Lei's hair length variations which were all over the place during the last arc. Once you start to notice, it's just impossible to unsee.
This would have become an ultimate favorite had it not been for this awful pacing. The pop music surprisingly fitted the show as well. As it stands, it was a very good one-time watch.
8.5 for me.
Liked the journey but I doubt I'll do it twice.

Familiar tropes meet solid execution and storytelling
The perfect blend of tried-and-tested tropes paired with solid, consistent writing, well-paced storytelling, and commendable technical execution. Shadow Love easily earns its place as one of the strongest romance period dramas of the year.I honestly don’t even know where to begin because there’s just so much to rave about. Sure, the drama has its fair share of hiccups and lapses (I still can’t wrap my head around how the female lead’s blood ended up being swallowed by the male lead during the first part, plus a few other questionable scenes), but these are more than compensated for by how well the series fares overall.
The premise—two powerful generals from opposing states, a dash of fantasy, an amnesia arc and personality shifts, and well-written secondary characters—isn’t groundbreaking. But what makes it work is the consistency in direction, writing, and pacing.
I’ve seen my fair share of historical fantasies and dramas that use “breather” scenes, probably for the sake of character downtime or viewer relief, but they often add little to the plot and end up making half—or worse, an entire—episode feel like a filler. Shadow Love doesn’t fall into that trap. Every part is decisive, pushing the narrative exactly where it needs to go. No unnecessary arcs, no wasted time.
The character writing remains consistent, even with the inclusion of the amnesia subplot. The male lead’s personality shift—uptight and emotionally closed off before the arc, then suddenly carefree and free-spirited during it—could’ve felt jarring or incongruent. But it’s thoughtfully supported through a conversation between the male lead and his brother Emperor Wencheng. It’s a detail I appreciated, especially since shows often leave viewers to fill in gaps themselves.
I also loved how they wrote Crown Prince Su Mu Yang. He’s a morally gray character, and his internal conflict is decently fleshed out.
The secondary characters weren’t sidelined, either. They had meaningful development that added crucial weight to the plot, which is refreshing, especially since secondary characters are often treated as mere ornaments in the series.
From a technical standpoint, the execution is also really impressive for a series.
The use of camera work to emphasize mood and subject was thoughtful. The shots weren’t overly reliant on set design, and the camera movements added emotional depth to scenes.
The lighting wasn’t spectacular, but it was well-utilized and never overbearing—a highlight for me, especially given the awkward lighting choices I’ve noticed in recent historical dramas.
The musical cues were spectacular. The OST is strong, and the timing of each track was precise, elevating the storytelling in key moments.
This good execution was especially evident during Xuan Yi Ke’s transformation scenes. The CGI, music scoring, and acting came together beautifully and it ended up as one of the most stunning transformations I’ve seen in a drama.
Acting-wise, I have to spotlight Cheng Lei. Admittedly, there’s a bit of bias here, but beyond my growing admiration for him, I’m genuinely impressed by his performance.
He portrayed three characters in this series: Duan Ao Deng /Prince Annan, Jin An, and Xuan Yi Ke /masked black man. And while the shifts were subtle, you could clearly see the nuanced differences in each role.
Coming from Legend of the Female General, I can also say he has a knack for building strong and good chemistry with his leading lady.
I was also pleasantly surprised by Bi Wen Jun’s portrayal of Crown Prince Su Mu Yang, a dual-role character. I’ve always seen Bi Wen Jun as the standard male lead, but his take on the anti-hero was unexpected and shows he’s a flexible actor.
As for the ending—it’s a no-brainer, kind of predictable, but this is not a miss. There is a difference that lies in the writing. The writer knew exactly where to take the audience, so the execution wasn’t messy as it flowed well and wrapped up cleanly.
Overall, while the premise leans on familiar tropes, what makes Shadow Love stand out is that the writer never underestimated its audience. They took those well-worn formulas and elevated them with strong technical execution, resulting in a series that truly shines among its contemporaries this year.

My beautiful general wife
I really enjoyed the series, it was fun and I got to see some cute reverse tropes (in the case of the general being all sweetly bossy to a helpless pretty boy) there were also some good villains that made me hate seeing them on camera. They pissed me off so hard. Some characters were developed nicely but at times that same development seemed a bit hasty.While I loved the series and how it ended, I didn't cry a lot which is just my own personal metric for dramas. (if I cry at some point during the drama then that means that the drama touched me that deeply).
The soundtrack was really nice and the main theme and song were great.

First and foremost, let me kowtow to our mighty prince-general couple, whom I so adore and respect. 🙇♀✨ [Shadow Love] will be remembered as one of the most unique Chinese dramas of the historical romance-fantasy genre. The WHOLE drama really lived up to its name, which can literally be translated to "With Jin Chang'an". If we look back to the earlier episodes, when the leads first met, Shuang gave our ML the name "Jin An" in the hopes of establishing "perpetual peace and stability for the Jin dynasty", the era they live in. Now, let me tell y'all what impressed me the most. ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ💓
One, is the unique character designs (obviously, ain't it? X3). We get to see a lovable and obedient Jin An; the mysterious and wild Xuan Yi Ke; and lastly, the dignified Prince Annan of the Yao kingdom, Duan Ao Deng~ Cheng Lei delivered ALL of these roles with brilliance! 'Dislike' is not even an option here. The role was custom-made for him. The same goes for our FL, Li Shuang, portrayed by Song Yi. Despite the harsh criticisms aimed towards her, 'Li Shuang' wouldn't be perfect if it weren't for our actress. Next is Lu Xin and Mo Yin, our beloved secondary couple, who brought extra smiles to the viewers. I love how sarcastic Lu Xin can be, and how she can handle her man well~😝 No less than our great general Li! Then we have our Qiao'er and Ouyang Jun, the couple we failed to protect😿. Lastly, the person who had the most character development imo would be Li Ting (Shuang's younger brother). Second, there are the tight-knit bonds of various relationships, both platonic and romantic. Li Shuang's love for Jin An (ML) and the male lead's devotion towards her know no bounds, despite the outside influences and his inner turmoil. Their journey was not futile, and every moment was valuable for them to face off the looming angst. Apart from these lovebirds, the most heartwarming bonds can be found in the brotherhood of ML and his Emperor brother, Papa Li and his tiger cubs (Shuang'er and Ting'er), as well as the friendship between Lu Xin, Shuang and Jin An.
Lastly, we can't forget the magnificence of the beautiful settings and CGI, elegant wardrobe choices, hairdo, and makeup, as well as the pleasing OST music from start to finish. Some of my favourite OSTs are Sole Love by Liu Yu Ning, Beyond Fate by Jane Zhang, and Bringing Peace by Huang Xiao Yun~ All the intricate details the editing department has added bring life to not only the characters, but also to the world they live in~✨ It's a fantasy world, but nothing is overdone~ ^^

My 2nd best cdrama for 2025
CL did so well here, kudos to the director for giving us 3 versions of CL and for me, this is best performance yet. The costume designers knew their assignment and for that, big congratulations!! From head to toe, his wardrobe for all his personas were amazingly beautiful.SL is a good actress and i especially enjoyed the scenes where she held the bow and arrow. Definitely a good choice of weapon and it suited her very perfectly, fierce!!! Episode 37 was my favorite episode and she did so well here. She portrayed the the different facets of the character so effortlessly on point.
The chemistry between CL and SY is perfect! Definitely something to be remembered, spanning all emotions you can think of.
The supporting cast were given ample time to develop and shine and they blended with the series so beautifully.
The last story arc was perfectly done, not hurried, just right.
OST is sooooo beautiful! The songs are in my playlist for life. LYN never fails.
Must watch!

A perfect emotional rollercoaster with gorgeous Ryan Cheng
To find no annoying useless filer character in a 38 episode drama is rare and Shadow Love is one of them. The drama is such a fun time with story, good actors, decent pacing and storyline and intelligent characters.But with so many shows maybe with better story lines out there what makes this one stand out....Ryan Cheng.
Unpopular but he was so much better in this than in Legend of Female General because the variety of emotions he displayed here was unreal. He was absolutely BEAUTIFUL, made my heartache with the way his eyes displayed all the emotions.
Even if for nothing else, watch it for Ryan Cheng.
Besides that the yearning, the protectiveness, the love, the angst, the chemistry.....takes your breath away. The only thing I would say could have been better was we could make him the prince a little earlier than it happened in the series.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED with GREAT CHEMISTRY!!!

Hating it until episode 31
This is a tricky one because there’s 38 episodes at approximately 40 minutes each. They obviously spent a bit of money on this and the cast are all really good looking people and the acting was pretty good.However, for the first 30 episodes I thought I was going to score this a 1 because I really hated the fact they kept falling for the villains schemes and traps willingly. I get the trope and I get it’s a vehicle to move the plot forward but the story just felt terrible and I thought it was a pile of horse crap Because they just kept letting the villains go every time they stopped one of their despicable schemes which were all targeted at their deaths.
Anyway, the story got good from episode 31 when he remembered he was a prince and I thought the story was actually good but I couldn’t forget how frustrated I was for the first 75% of the drama hence why I can only score at a five. I liked how the main villains all got their comeuppance and we got a happy ending.
Again, I understand the story was romance driven but the sub plots and political intrigue were lacking. Style over substance..

Where (shadow) love conquers all ?❤️
💕 Romance 💕To start, I didn't expect too much from the show? It's my understanding that that same lack of expectation was pretty widespread, and that the show ended up surprising a lot of viewers. 🤣
When I tell non-drama watchers about Shadow Love, I say it's sort of like some Marvel superhero meets a historical Chinese drama. I think that's a pretty accurate comp to make, lol.
Now let's take a moment to appreciate Cheng Lei in all three roles: Jin An, Man in Black, and Prince Annan, as well as some combination of those three at various points of the show. He impressed me when I first saw him in MJTY alongside Tian Jia Rui (yeeeeee, crazy poison Didi and tsundere af Gege really stole that show!). But I didn't realize just how talented he was until I saw his range in one show.
The character development was top-notch imo. Li Shuang goes from being a tough, duty-bound general by adoption to a lovestruck heroine who has to make tough decisions. Repeatedly. Song Yi captured Shuang's honorable, serious side but also her adorable, softer sides as she allowed herself to be vulnerable with Jin An.
I'm not gonna lie, I watched this show before LoTFG. It gripped me a lot quicker, honestly. The premise was just too good: enemy generals fall in love through some blood pact, doomed to eventually fight one another.
Earlier this month, I had praised When Destiny Brings the Demon for its romance. The romance in that is still applaudable. But I actually think Shadow Love’s romance topped it. From Jin An creating magical moments all for Shuang (peach blossom pastries, sweetening bitter medicine, that plain but precious hair pin) to Shuang risking everything for her beloved, to their emotional bond overcoming the Jade Linglong, and the blood pact, and war, and AMNESIA.

I also can’t ignore the side characters. Lu Xin and Mo Yin were a delight to watch. Though their love story was calmer, I still loved the way Lu Xin gently teased Master Mo and made herself completely at home at Wuling Mountain. The smile on Mo Yin's face every time he realized just how much he liked this bold healer was priceless. And the friendship between them and Shuang/Jin An was touching and well-written!
😂 Comedy 😂
There wasn’t excessive comedy in this one, but the lighter moments really worked. I laughed out loud when Prince Li called Jin An Shuang’s wife while Mu Yang got stuck with the concubine label 🥴. Mo Yin and Lu Xin brought a playful energy to their scenes, and Jin An was quietly adorable throughout.
🌀 Plot 🌀
I felt like everything was wrapped up quite nicely. I was relieved that Su Muyang was able to turn himself around in the end. I was worried there. And yes, he made some questionable decisions before we reached the finale, but the guy went through a lot.

There were so many great tracks in this show! Of course, Jane Zhang and Liu Yuning's songs were 👨🏻🍳💋 (That Jane Zhang ED theme is rivaling how often Kpop Demon Hunters' "Golden" gets played in my car. Sorry, kids! lol)
Apparently Cheng Lei himself sings "Caressing Shadows", one of the most haunting tracks. Omgggg… and Song Yi sang a track as well? I don't think "Waiting for You" was played as much, but it’s also a lovely piece.
My favorite might be "Bringing Peace" by Huang Xiaoyun. That song is just… it’s so Jin An x Li Shuang 🥺 "Old Age" was another gorgeous piece. This drama did not suffer from a shortage of Spotify-blastable music.
🌏 World-Building 🌏
The world-building was adequate. I was definitely left with some curiosity about the Jade Linglong and the Wuling Mountain sect, but the primary story was set in Taijin. The political strife was designed well, and I was satisfied with the ending. I especially loved how the leads got to live together freely with peace in the realm, just like Li Shuang always wanted.

This drama had some of the most gorgeous sets, somehow, without it being a xianxia. That floral loft Jin An created early on for Shuang? Their wedding bed in Wuling Mountain? Shuang's little paradise prison during her stay in the Yao kingdom (after Prince Annan moves her out of the dungeon, ofc). These two had some truly beautiful scenes with settings to match.
📈 Binge Factor 📈
The only reason I wasn’t watching 8 episodes a day at first was because I was juggling other dramas (When Destiny Brings the Demon, Blossom). But by the end, it was nearly impossible not to stay up all night for “just one more episode.” 😉
🎭 Acting 🎭
Cheng Lei in three roles = brilliance. His range blew me away and cemented him as one of my favorite rising leads. Song Yi balanced strength and vulnerability perfectly.
The supporting cast also shined. Lu Xin’s warmth, Mo Yin’s subtlety, and even the villains leaned into their roles with conviction.
🔥 Conflict 🔥
The stakes were always high, but I think the most emotional to watch from this show was when Jin An had his memories back and was torn between vengeance for his brother, whom he thought was dead, or the life he wanted as Jin An with Shuang.
⭐ Final Thoughts ⭐
I posted a meme about the existential crisis one experiences after finishing a series. I definitely felt that with this one. It's hard to move on. It will be on my mind for a long time, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes action, great storytelling, and swoon-worthy romance.
